So much for Robben tearing him a new one.Put in a good performance.

He was ok. My funny Buttner moments were -When earlier in the match he had the chance to let the ball roll over for a goal kick but he stopped it and then didn't know what the feck to do with it. Second was when he had chance to make a simple pass to have Rooney clear around the 40 minute but twice hit the player in front of him.

I think he is my new Ando. Love the guy but I am terrified throughout that he is going to do something really daft.

Good performance from Buttner tonight. His defensive play was impressive.

It may be true that defensively it was a better performance than Evra is likely to give. However, if we go by what players are likely to give then that performance isnt what Buttner was likely to give. He's been a lot more leaky than that in 99% of his other games. So we dont know for sure that Evra wouldnt have been up for the big game like Buttner was.

On the flip side Evra always keeps the ball, been an outlet and given us a bit of a threat infinitely better than Buttner did. At home that might have been useful. But we played like the away team anyway.

Who knows - could be just the game that turns him into a real option for us down the road - one game and all but, he's not had many chances but, more performances like that and he'll definitely have a chance.

Did well. Who knows, he may develop into something quite dependable.

He's done well in every game that he's played. In some, he's a little more rash and got himself caught up the pitch but with the way we set out to play on the counter today, he did very well defensively. He was not torn apart by Robben and did especially well whenever he tried to get past him to the byline. That little block where he got us a GK out of it was a sublime piece of defending.

I can confidently say there is no way Evra would have been as good defensively today as Buttner was. It doesn't make it a great defensive performance by him but he was very good. Some of the criticism he gets is very harsh and with a run of games he's shown he is a very able backup and even first choice in cases of emergencies. Very happy with his performance!

He was poor. What game were you guys watching? "Better than Evra would have done"

He made a few good tackles and interceptions in the second half but his ability to retain the ball is absolutely dire.
He started off nervously and really grew into it. He was very good tonight, deserves credit where it's due.

I thought he did well any time he didn't have the ball, he read the game well and shadowed Robben well instead of lunging in as I feared he would.

There's a reason your view is in the minority. He was very good and Evra has cost us countless goals this year. Honestly, who retained the ball well for us today?

Buttner is not as awful as he is made on this site. He is a decent squad player. His biggest flaw is not being Fabio. Thats why he gets criticised a lot.

First 30 minutes he was poor. But he got more confident as the match went on.

Did great tonight, really pleased with his performance defensively. Still think Moyes will opt for Evra in the second leg, but good on Alex.

Even De Gea kept the ball better with his long kicks at 39% from 18. Buttner 33% from 12 passes all game. It was shocking, he'd either hoof the ball or slam his pass straight into a Bayern player.

The next is Rooney at 52% playing percentage passes to try and create things. Buttner is the only outfield player not to at least be 50/50 and he only had 12 passes to make.

The hate on Evra on this site is pathetic. Cost us countless goals this year. Dont make me laugh. Hes been one of very few players who have actually showed some drive and compassion on the pitch this season, and his offensive contribution is criminally underrated. The space he creates for his winger by having the engine to support up the pitch 90 minutes every game is immense.

If you think Buttner is better than him then...

He didn't really try to pass it to people but he did an excellent job defensively which is all that we needed from him. Started nervously as people have said, only had 33% pass accuracy from 12 passes I think the stat was, but Robben made nothing other then shots from range.

Nice to see that it wasnt just my impression that was off. People had so low expectations of Buttner that anything other than a complete skinning and a red card is hailed as a great performance.

I think that's the thing, we're expecting horrifically negative contribution from him that a simple tackle is met with much aplomb.
But I do think he performed well tonight defensively.

Am I the only one who thinks that he wasn't good today. He made a great interception on the first half but that's it. When he had the ball he was even worse than Fellaini.

Dont know why some are suggesting Evra should walk into the team in Allianz. Evra constantly has brain farts and random lapses and is quite the liability these days. Buttner showed he can defend and should be played against Newcastle, which then should act as the indicator whether he earns his spot in the first team away at Bayern.

Thats pretty much all he wants to do these days.

Still not convinced by him, it's one game where he lifted and performed.

In saying that, credit where it's due, he was very good and surprised me.

I think he was helped, especially in the first half that we defended so narrow on the left, I thought it would prove a disaster but by giving Rafinha space to bomb forward, it actually took away Robben's space and Buttner didn't have to worry about Robben near the box. The 2nd half when we defended a bit more balanced, Robben started to get a bit more isolated with his man. But all in all, very good performance by Buttner.

Still need to invest in a LB though. Tonight changes nothing.

To be fair, I was expecting Robben and Rafinha to rip him a new one today so I'm pleasantly surprised, even though he just tried to hoof it out instead of passing it to someone. Evra should still come in next game though.

You said it yourself, the hoofs were often clearances and I was happy enough to see it done tonight considering our game plan.

Ill take back the countless comment as its a bit over the top but he's often been a liability at the back that's for sure. I love paddy, but he's not been himself this year, he offers plenty going forward all right but he struggles to get back like he use to.

He played excellent. Some great defending. Thought he was going to be a weak link but stepped up.
As for giving possession away....he was under pressure to clear it anyway, like any defender would be. But he took a moment to think about it when he had enough time and I respect him for that (although at first he seemed like he was dilly dallying).

He got better as the game went on, I thought. However, I got a bit annoyed at how slowly he closed down players on the right wing when Bayern spread the ball that way.

Very good performance from him. I thought he'd see us get destroyed, so glad to see him shut me up.

To critical in my view, Bayern targeted him as a weakness, he came through it.

defended very well tonight but not very good going forward.
I will play him ahead of Evra in the 2nd though as he looks like a better defender at the moment.
We all know Evra loves bombing forward but we will need to keep it safe and quiet for the 1st half in Munich.

So? Only 12 passes to make. How's that his fault? How many of these 12 times was he given the ball with the single purpose of clearing it? That's how the first half was played. Not like Giggs was hugging the line to help him out. Always the easiest pass to make for a full back. That option wasn't available for Büttner which left hoofing it or going back the way it came.

Still baffled by these Opta stats compared to the CL stats. They are so vastly different. Can't understand how that's possible with simple counting. Opta has Vidic with 17 passes at 94%. CL has him at 35 passes with 77%.

I'd play him second leg if fit. He's not composed enough on the ball but we'll need someone who can run the line down the left and still get back in time to cover defensively, and Evra just can't physically do it.

He was surprisingly good defensively tonight as well. Jones was the one who looked shakey

I thought he was great defensively, and it was clear that Bayern were targeting him (as Getsme mentioned already) - he dealt with it brilliantly. Held his own against the most in-form winger around, and considering his lack of game time outside of cannon fodder matches, I think it was a very admirable performance. Showed a lot of balls.
