So much for Robben tearing him a new one.Put in a good performance.
He started off nervously and really grew into it. He was very good tonight, deserves credit where it's due.He was poor. What game were you guys watching? "Better than Evra would have done"
He made a few good tackles and interceptions in the second half but his ability to retain the ball is absolutely dire.
There's a reason your view is in the minority. He was very good and Evra has cost us countless goals this year. Honestly, who retained the ball well for us today? He was poor. What game were you guys watching? "Better than Evra would have done"

positively surprised tonight. Managed to keep himself concentrated during all the game- something very difficult for evra to doHe might have booked his place in the return leg

He didn't really try to pass it to people but he did an excellent job defensively which is all that we needed from him. Started nervously as people have said, only had 33% pass accuracy from 12 passes I think the stat was, but Robben made nothing other then shots from range. He was poor. Evra had a shocker last time in Munich too, still stuck in the memory.
Even De Gea kept the ball better with his long kicks at 39% from 18. Buttner 33% from 12 passes all game. It was shocking, he'd either hoof the ball or slam his pass straight into a Bayern player.
The next is Rooney at 52% playing percentage passes to try and create things. Buttner is the only outfield player not to at least be 50/50 and he only had 12 passes to make.
I think that's the thing, we're expecting horrifically negative contribution from him that a simple tackle is met with much aplomb.Nice to see that it wasnt just my impression that was off. People had so low expectations of Buttner that anything other than a complete skinning and a red card is hailed as a great performance.
Am I the only one who thinks that he wasn't good today. He made a great interception on the first half but that's it. When he had the ball he was even worse than Fellaini.

To be fair, I was expecting Robben and Rafinha to rip him a new one today so I'm pleasantly surprised, even though he just tried to hoof it out instead of passing it to someone. Evra should still come in next game though.Thats pretty much all he wants to do these days.

The hate on Evra on this site is pathetic. Cost us countless goals this year. Dont make me laugh. Hes been one of very few players who have actually showed some drive and compassion on the pitch this season, and his offensive contribution is criminally underrated. The space he creates for his winger by having the engine to support up the pitch 90 minutes every game is immense.
If you think Buttner is better than him then...
To critical in my view, Bayern targeted him as a weakness, he came through it.He got better as the game went on, I thought. However, I got a bit annoyed at how slowly he closed down players on the right wing when Bayern spread the ball that way.
So? Only 12 passes to make. How's that his fault? How many of these 12 times was he given the ball with the single purpose of clearing it? That's how the first half was played. Not like Giggs was hugging the line to help him out. Always the easiest pass to make for a full back. That option wasn't available for Büttner which left hoofing it or going back the way it came.Even De Gea kept the ball better with his long kicks at 39% from 18. Buttner 33% from 12 passes all game.
