Luka Modric

How much possession did Scholes manage to get he when we beat barca at Old Trafford?

Real were happy to let bayern have the ball so that they could open them up on the counter. And it worked.

Going by your logic, modric would have had the better game simply by playing for bayern last night than madrid.

Was Scholes the best midfielder in the world then? The main thing about Scholes was his goalthreat

Can someone confirm for me who the English commentators were against Dortmund in the CL when they played? I thin it was Jim Beglin, but either way whoever it was made a massive dick of themselves by saying that 'Modric can't play long passes' and then a minute later he goes and creams one across the pitch to which the commentator said 'Lovely pass, doesn't usually play them'. I was a bit gobsmacked tbh. Anyone who watches Modric knows his passing range is complete. Like Scholes.

To the thread: Definitely been one of their best and most consistent players and last night he was probably MOTM alongside Xabi. I think they could have had a lot more possession alongside Isco - but it was all about soaking up the pressure and hitting them on the counter, and it worked.

In 2008 the main thing about scholes was goal threat?

Also you didn't respond to the other point. Would modric have automatically have had a better game had he played for bayern? Obviously his team would have had 70% of the ball.

Yes of course he'd have been better on the other team and wouldnt have had 28% of the ball. So would Djemba Djemba or Fellaini.

Yes Scholes late runs and goalthreat was the main thing he had over top CMs. It wasnt keeping the ball. There were plenty better than him and when he came up against those players in big european games he was restricted to passing sideways and back to his defenders on a lot of occasions. He never had the nimbleness of someone like Modric to take the ball into his feet and dribble his way into a better passing position. Likewise Modric has never had Scholes ability to make a run and score goals

Right, that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Possession isn't the only gauge of a midfielders performance as we've often proven against arsenal. As inter prove against barca when they beat them 3-1. And so on.

Complete nonsense. Scholes never played for a possession based team. Neither did modric yesterday. At least, try and look further than "possession stat seen. Opinion formed."

I remember a newspaper saying Moyes did not try to sign Modric because he was not a big game player.

Deary me.

Best CM in the world. Only Ramsey/Toure have been close to this level. But to do that to Bayern Munich. Amazing

What a player, he was brilliant tonight from what I saw tonight and I presume he played well throughout. He's so calm on the ball, reminds me of Scholes in that sense.

To be fair, take a look at this thread title, and read the first few posts. Which are only from last year. Moyes was hardly fighting a tide of popular opinion clamouring for us to go all to sign Modric.

Top managers know talent when they see one. It is not a player who is inform that a manager should get. There is a difference.

As if this guys quality was ever in any doubt. Magic

A fair few thought he was Spurs' level and some thought Anderson and Cleverley were only slightly inferior. He's looked like the perfect midfielder for us since 2010 really.

This is why we shouldnt have been afraid to over pay for a player who would have suited us perfectly.

Cant believe I thought he wasnt worth what Real paid for him.

Thank god he chose to go to Real instead of Chelsea. He is the best central midfielder at the moment and it's already painful to see him in Real. Just imagine him in a rival club like Chelsea every week..

I think you would have paid top dollar for Modric if there was any chance that he wanted to play for you.
Madrid paid 33 million for him, Berbatov was still out most expensive player at that time for around 30 million. I don't think there was ever any chance of us breaking that record for Modric. Shame though, in the long run he would have probably been worth it.

Will someone please change the thread title, surely he has earned that at least

He has really blossomed under Ancelotti this season and is keeping Khedira and the young guns rightfully out of the team. Imo he has been one of their strongest players this season and would be exactly that type of player I would love to see in our central midfield behind Kagawa--Mata--X. Put a physical beast like Carvalho next to him and we would have a CM pairing that would be very hard to beat but still good producing something for our attack.

I certainly expect both Anderson and Cleverley to better him this year and probably every other year too.

I remember this guy making an absolute tit of himself as far as Modric was concerned. Too bad he's banned, the schadenfreude would've been hilarious. There were other caftards too that thought he was overrated. Incredible.

Modric would've been the absolute ideal replacement for Scholes that was out there. I'd say dealing with Levy probably was the biggest detriment to any potential deal.

I don't think Levy was ever going to let us take Modric after the Berba shenanigans. I know who I would have rather had with hindsight.

Modric and RM probably have Mourinho to thank for him now being a RM player as I am not sure without Mourinho RM would have signed him as he wasn't a glamourous name.

I must admit I wasn't convinced he was good enough after his first season but now I struggle to think of a player who has been better than him for us. There's ofcourse this Portuguese fellow that is a bit superhuman but in terms of consistency he's definately been our standout performer throughout the season. I don't remember a single game where he hasn't been ridiculously good.

Only game he struggled for me was the 4-3 Classico apart from that he has shown up in EVERY game. Best midfielder in Europe this season, bar none.

I was just telling my brother who's a Real fan exactly that yesterday. Very close to Ronaldo in terms of your best player. He's a fantastic footballer really.

In 2009, I created a thread stating that United must sign him. Many did not rate him at the time, but with each passing year, more and more have finally opened their eyes to his quality. Absolutely phenomenal player.

Its not an overstatement to say he's the best midfielder in the world at all. The way he has played this year has put him in the top bracket, frankly I'd struggle to even come up with 1 CM this year who has clearly played better than him. This goes for the likes of Toure, Iniesta, Schweinsteiger, Vidal e.t.c.
