Liverpool

I said some untoward things about Hillsborough & Heysel. Didn't think they were too bad but some people did.
in fairness i thought you were on the beer but I've seen you go off on one in the gas thread before and thought you were just letting off a bit of steam.

And I'm saying that Liverpool winning by a shed-load won't matter if City win their games because the shed won't be big enough. You said
"i am saying its the way i would want to win it though and not have to rely on a mistake", which I took to mean that you wanted to win it on goal difference rather than by City dropping points, because that's sort of still in your hands. Which of course is ridiculous when you could just, you know, win it on points.

The game absolutely did not boil down to one mistake. Chelsea had a couple of good chances before the mistake. Chances that they were afforded because of Liverpool's tactics. The mistake was also so costly because of the tactics. As I said, there was absolutely no need for the back line to be that high, and they were only that high because Rodgers had Liverpool desperately looking for a lead at half time. They didn't need to win the game, a draw would have been fine, yet Rodgers had them playing like 3 points were vital.

He's worked wonders this season, you can't deny that, but he was shown up against Chelsea, and the defense of him and his tactics is frankly quite strange. The whole world and his dog knew how Mourinho was going to set up, and the whole world and his dog knew that the way Mourinho was going to set up was the perfect counter for Rodger's usual tactics. Despite this, Rodgers played his usual tactics. Any stick he gets for doing that is very much deserved.

One thing I will add is that next season is going to be a whole different ball game for Liverpool, and they aren't going to be able to rely on shit or bust every game to get them near the top. They've been a bit fortunate this season with no European football to distract them/tire them out mid-week, and United being so off the pace, City and Chelsea not being quite on top form, and Spurs and Arsenal being even more wet lettuce than usual. Rodgers has done brilliantly to take advantage of that and put Liverpool in a position that I don't think anyone thought possible back in August, but his tactic has been sussed and he needs to do some serious strengthening over the summer if they're hoping for a repeat performance next season.
the term shed load implies it will be enough. You should go into management as you have all the answers. Oh and i wont be going near predicting next season as i had Liverpool down for7th this year and united for 3rd. Just shows what i know.

Then you're deluded. If it comes to goal difference, the league is City's.

As for next season, I think the only top 4 certainties are City and Chelsea. I expect Arsenal, Liverpool and United to challenge for the remaining two spots, with one possibly mounting a title challenge too. Spuds and Everton, as always, outsiders for top 4.

no i want my team to score a shed load and win both games. I also want to win the lottery. You can want something and still know what is likely. Ah a deluded liverpo fan lol..... As for you're predictions well i want Leicester to come up and go on an early run but Liverpool to pop them at the last but going by the last 5 years id go with what you said. Incidentally has anyone ever seen the surprise packages coming? I know eamon dunphy on rte had backed atletico Madrid from the group stages of the champions league to win it at 33-1 but have other pundits called one that is such an outsider its over the hedge?

Rodgers' ego obviously got the better of him. His press conferences all week prior to the game (the ones Barney and co. were gushing over) gave everyone an insight into the deluded mind of the man - "we'll play the right way", "you all know what way we're going to approach the game, "we'll play to win, not to draw" etc. Total bullshit. He lost his focus and was determined to prove his team were indeed the best football team in the land.

Mourinho's tactics against Atletico in the days prior to the Liverpool game obviously threw him. He simply couldn't resist acting the Billy Big Bollocks and tried to win the game by scoring three or four. His naiveté was astounding. Hindsight is wonderful, but I'm still flabbergasted that he didn't accept the draw which would have won them the title. Avoid defeat, take the point, move on; title still in their hands.

Incredible stupidity.

Very true. If I remember correctly Liverpool played pretty defensively, at least in the first half at Stamford bridge in December. Its silly for him to act like it is below him. I also remember him going to old Trafford last season and playing defensively too.

His ego? He didn't say anything about how we'd play before the game. He said he was enjoying being on top of the league and that he wasn't expecting them to play a weakened team. I was gushing over his dig at Chelsea's youth policy.

He didn't try to win by scoring three or four. The first half was relatively controlled and it was a slip that forced us to really attack hell for leather.

Had he gone for the draw and lost you'd have criticised him even more.

He went with the system that had us here and it failed

If City end up winning the title I'm going to make my Facebook picture one of Gerrard crying from a few weeks ago until the world cup starts.

:snigger:

I thought you were pushed up to far, Chelsea had retreated in order to draw you up, condense the play and counter the space behind, Liverpool fell for it and Rogers failed to notice it but the pressure this time of year is all consuming. Ba still had a good way to travel after the slip but prior to that the pressure the pressing and countering had you flustered to a point where your captain miscontrolled a simple pass into feet.

Should have sat deeper IMO, you only needed a point, Mourinho drew you out on and off the field, a more experienced manager (even Moyes lol) would not have advanced up the field in that fashion, it was brilliant suicide from my point of view.

Hopefully Pulis will end this fecking farce on Monday night.

Really really horrible tactics from Rodgers tonight. Terrible.

As Rodgers said today; "the pressure is all on City". Lol. Good mind games, Brenton. Absolutely delighted with tonight's result. Their sheer arrogance a-few weeks back was absolutely sickening.

It's hilarious to think of how smug Liverpool fans were a few weeks ago. What they didn't appreciate is that they're team is still fecking Liverpool - a joke club. That fact that they had such a good campaign only to bottle it at the end makes it all the sweeter. Maybe they can mount another challenge in 10 years or so.

Looks like all Gerrard got to kiss this season was another camera at Old Trafford.

The Liverpool love-in will soon be well and truly dead. Absolute bottle jobs. Their one and only chance of a league title is gone.

Wonder what they will do with all the league champions 2013/2014 t-shirts that were for sale outside Anfield recently.

Rodgers was right, there was another twist in the title race. Liverpool just twisted right out of it.

I'd have said slipped out of it was probably more apt after last week, but either works.

This proves the media is against them.

Because nobody had the right to vote for Yaya Toure? Hazard? etc

Its such bullshit that its always the striker who gets the media coverage. Just because some players didn't score an equal amount doesn't mean they didn't perform equally well. Where was Suarez in all the big matches? Thats right, nowhere.

City best not bottle it, I've got some great ideas for a Liverpool themed cover of Nelly's "Just A Dream"

As hilarious as Palace discovering the Spirit of Istanbul is, Liverpool have still massively overachieved this season.

Had everything for them to win it this season. No United, no Europe, out of the cups, a freak season in terms of goals and the still blew it.

As much as it pains me to say this, they've played the best football I've seen in the PL in years.

Part of me hoped they'd lose the PL on goal difference with a last minute winner by City. Oh well beggars can't be choosers.
