Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Haven't posted here in a while. Here are my one line reviews of some of the oscar nominees of last year.

12 years a slave - everyone here in the US loved the movie. I think it was more due to you know all the guilt. Chiwetel was alright but Fassbender was the real star. Cumberbatch was average.

American Hustle - I was so looking forward to this movie but fell asleep in the theater after an hour. Maybe I was just tired.

Gravity - didn't watch it in 3D. Boring.

Wolf of Wall Street - Why was this movie so looonng? Would have been way more entertaining had it been an hour shorter. Leonardo was actually quite good for most of it.

Her - Movie of the year. Had no expectations. Didn't even want to watch it but it was brilliant for the most part. Phoenix was excellent. I dont know how Jonze managed to pull off the sex scene without making it seem really really awkward.

100% Agree by far the best film I've watched this year. I actually had some full on man tears in this movie

the sex scene was excruciating, i thought. it would have been interesting to have seen it with samantha morton instead of johansson. was it ever confirmed that morton suffered a stroke a few years back?
Yeah I probably will at some point. Does it contain the
bridge
scene? And how does it compare if so?
nah, nothing quite as crazy. my memory is terrible but i think the big equivalent set piece was a three point turn, which was somehow made even more compelling than the one i attempted during my driving test.
in order to make an incredibly sharp turn up a mountain slope, the trucks had to reverse onto a completely rotten wooden platform overhanging the cliff face. there's overlap with sorceror as the tires first can't get traction, then get stuck between the rotten planks. a couple of the cool set pieces are different, but i won't mention more in case you do watch it. i think dumbo's right in that so much probably depends on which you watch first, making it fresher. they're pretty draining watches. anyway, cool write up, thanks. i would have really liked to have seen steve mcqueen in it. the filming of it sounds even more of a nightmare than you'd guess from watching it.

You're taking the piss or you've been impersonated. It was weak-minded, unfunny drivel even by the standards of shite rom-coms.

Frank - I went to see it expecting it to be just quirky fun going by the trailer but got a lot more than that. It is very funny, particularly for the first hour or so with some smart and some silly humour, but as the film went on it developed in a way that I didn't expect. It doesn't fully work but is largely very moving and I was glad it didn't go for the soft, predictable ending and that Gleeson's character eventually didn't fit in. It's definitely worth watching, it's funny, sweet and Fassbender is fantastic despite having a massive fibre glass head on for almost the entire film.

Worst films you have watched?

Go on.

My list: Navy Seals 2, Jaws: The Revenge, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power, Fast and Furious, House of the Dead

There would be more on my list but plenty of movies I heard/saw previews and figured were shit beforehand, therefore never watched (including the entire Fast and Furious collection).

I could include a massively overrated list with films such as The Matrix, Titanic, etc., but let's only mention shit/worst films.

Worst: Monuments Men, Bad Boys II, Tomorrow When The War Began, The Room

Found footage horror film. Absolutely bloody awful. They make the grave mistake of telling you how all the characters end up in the opening scene, which makes this borefest even worse. Nothing happens in the first hour, instead you're forced to watch two VERY unlikeable characters piss around and talk about sex. The lead actress was especially annoying, but she was mildly hot and you get to see her tits so some plus points there. Then, about halfway through, they bring in two of their equally annoying friends, one of which is with his girlfriend yet proceeds to flirt with and bang the lead guys girlfriend in front of him, while the lead guy just stands around and whinges. That's how stupid this film was which is a shame because the location they got was pretty creepy. There were one or two mildly scary bits but overall, it was abysmal 3/10

watched the lego movie last night!

Man that movie is crazy!! Like being on a binge of acid and speed!!! :nervous:

All in all its good movie, some good one liners in it and its very well done with a nice twist at the end!

7/10

Thought it was excellent. Put it on the same level as Finding Nemo, Monster's inc. Would give it 9.5/10 (for a kids film that is).

It was good, but 9.5?

I'd give Toy Story 1 or 3 a 9 or 9.5! Monsters Inc should be around 8.5-9 as well... Lego Movie is good but falls slightly off for me compared to Toy Story and Monsters!

Great movie, but seriously trippy! :)

Yeh true 9.5 was too high, just slightly below Toy Story. A solid 9, however the difference was it was so very well made. The whole movie was lego. from the sky to the water, I just thought it was incredible. Way more thought went into this animation more than any other film. But you're right, it's not a 9.5.

You wanna have a go at Scarface?

I will be leading the charge! One of the most overrated films ever. Shawshank Redemption as well.

We are kindred spirits.

There are probably worse films, but there are few, if any, films that I've hated/offended me more than The Impossible.

Scarface isn't overrated. Nobody has ever said that it's a masterpiece. It just contains loads of quotable lines and is a good, entertaining adult drama flick that hasn't really aged well.

It's also daft to claim that Con-Air is terrible. It's meant to be terrible.

About 48,027 gangsta rappers just chucked a handful of popcorn in the general direction of your house.

I like quite like the rise and fall of Tony Montana. It's hammy stuff, but watchable nonetheless.

North by Northwest - It came as a recommendation of @Balu (especially as I had it on my imdb watch list too) as one of Hitchkock movies that goes under the radar. However, I didn't like it as much. While the story was particularly good (probably the best from Hitchkock movies) I think that the movie was overdramatic (and actors overacted) even for Hitchkock standard. Especially the long scene on the car, the assasination on UN and the final scene were so more dramatic than they should have been to have the effect.

That's not to say that it wasn't a good movie, but the likes of Dial M For Murder, Rear Window and Rope were better IMO, despite this being a richer movie than them. 7/10

Add to my list of worst movies watched - Howling VII. I could add just about any of this franchise to a list of horrendous movies, save the initial installment which gets my vote for best werewolf movie of all-time. Yet Howling VII is so bad it makes each of Howling II-VI look like a masterpiece. That bad. And the worst werewolf transformation ever attempted.

I can't rate Howling VIII (titled Howling: Reborn) as I've not watched, but I'm fairly certain it's crap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howling_VII

Best bits about each
Howling II - Sybil Danning's tits, catchy theme song, the end credits is the best part of the film
Howling III - nothing good about this film except that it's in Australia, although the nun werewolf costume part is funny
Howling IV - a weird human-melting-turning-into-weird-werewolf scene, hot tits
Howling V - has a good plot, easily second best film of the franchise
Howling VI - vampires and werewolves, still better than that weak Twilight shit, yet this too is a horrendous film
Howling VII - "you missed a spot" - so terrible it's hilarious
