Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

I'm happy to have LvG as our new manager and Holland played really well, but things might have looked a bit different had Silva made it 2-0 when he tried to chip the keeper. I'm just trying to keep a perspective.

You're right, the score would have ended up 5-2.

Seriously, though, the Dutch completely dominated Spain because they knew how to deal with tiki taka. Much in the same way that Barca were found out by Bayern a couple of years back. Once Holland got into their stride there was only one team that was going to win.

Would have had no effect whatsoever because Spain wouldn't sit back and try and defend like a Moyes team. It would have been 5-2/6-2/7-2/8-3

This. Spain never have a Plan B.

Indeed. They were lucky to be level at half time. Do Spain let it slip at that point? Doubt it.

Netherlands did brilliantly today but our rivals aren't going to be any more wary of us than they already would have been. Nothing was shown that we didn't already know about LVG and we still have the same weaknesses in our squad.

All today proved was that we are certainly going to improve next season, which we already knew.

Honestly, can you remember this and how it felt? The helplessness and desperation. I'm so fecking excited to see this guy in action and I'm not worried one but about our signings.

Van Gaals post match interview was brilliant. Very calm and understated, almost never cracked a smile.

He put the emphasis on how during the whole qualifying campaign he only selected really fit players. Sneijder was stripped because of captaincy and not selected sometimes because of that. He said fitness was going to be very important in Brazil and selected with that in mind. Made compliments to the players for training and preparing so well and that they are really fit.

About tactics he also said that he knew in advance that Spain would keep attacking, and therefore a lot of the time it would be Pique - Ramos playing 1 on 1 against RVP and Robben, so he thought it was logical we scored so many if Spain took that risk, with the qualities we have, because they were always going to attack.

A lot of players, like Janmaat, Blind, BMI, Cillesen and De Guzman played their first matches at a big tournament, some of the players in the squad have never even been to South America and are very inexperienced and were a bit nervous, that is why we had a dip of form after the penalty. But during half time LVG said he gave some advice/solutions and the team looked way more confident on the ball after the break.

Against Australia it might be a 4-3-3 he will apply. Against Chili tonights system perhaps. He realises this result means nothing if Australia gets a result against Holland.
Cheers mate, that's interesting.

I really liked this picture, I don't care much about winning trophies or signing - just want to see a happy/united squad off players performing to their potential and playing for the manager. Sure, VG has his moments with players where he falls out with them but generally I think he gets on well with his squad.

I hope I will never see a depressing season like last season again, not the results or league standing it's just the whole experience was awful.

I just woke up after having a dream about the WC. Van Gaal masterminded a 5-1 demolition of Spain. Daft and farfetched dream but anyway, what time does the game kick off?

I must admit when his name was first floated around, I had a bit of doubt about LvG, but after I read a bit about him, and after carefully watching Oranje playing, I think United is back in business.

At the end of the game I noticed he went all round his squad of players before shaking with Del Bosque, who was waiting around like a lemon. It was like he was showing how important those guys are, even though they were just on the bench. You could see the respect they had for him.

I suppose we caught a glimpse of what RvP meant with "save this interview".

WE'RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!

Now that that's out of my system - really excited to see this guy working at OT. I mean you can see how energetic he is. Has that same never say die attitude that SAF had, which Moyes blatantly lacked. Once we were 1-0 down and playing against a big team, you might as well have blown the whistle. With this guy, I can see us overturning 3-0s at Anfield. Maybe it's just the dreamer in me speaking, but whyever not? If this game is anything to go by.

You are felling the vibe. :D

I've calmed down a bit more and I'm not going to get too excited until I see his performance against another team. If he continues this way I might need therapy.

Any post-match interviews?
"The best moment was on the pitch. Everyone was so happy on the field. No one dared to dream this," he told NOS.

"In the dressing room there was a speech from the captain [Van Persie] and from Sneijder.

"I never thought it would go like this. After the penalty from Spain I thought 'will it be a night like this? That the world champions would win like that?'.

"I was already thinking about what I would do at half-time. If it was still 1-0 at the break, I would play 4-3-3 to keep the pressure on the ball.

"But then Robin scored. He headed that ball with so much feeling. He knew it before. He saw the goalkeeper standing too far in front of his goal. It was a beautiful goal."

After scoring the equaliser, Van Persie ran over to the technical area to give Van Gaal a high five and afterwards the coach spoke of his admiration for the player.

"It's fantastic a player does that," he added. "It's a sign of appreciation, which is mutual."

Despite their perfect start, Van Gaal was also at pains to warn his players that there remains plenty to do if they are to reach the knockout stages and live up to their opening performance.

"We still have nothing," he insisted. "This is a good start. If we don't beat Australia, we have nothing. If we do beat them then we have a good start.

"We also have to play Chile. I said before we could beat Spain because they always want to attack. Spain always want to dominate.

"I wanted that also for 20 years. But you can't always attack. You must look at the players you have."

A bit long so I've spoilered it.

I can see you lot are going all wet about him. He might fall out with everyone in your club after 2 years but I'm sure you would appreciate all he would have done until then. Superb manager and I'm sure he is going to get you back where you should be.

I am like, everyone else, quite impressed by the Dutch performance. RVP proved why he is our best No.9 and LVG proved he is a formidable manager.
I also loved LVG's interaction with his players. It is clear that they believe in him and that he cares about them.
Previous quotes suggested that he was all about himself a la Mourinho but watching today gave me a new found respect for him.
Results like this one against Spain should give him enough leeway to do what he wants with United, as he obviously is a master of his craft.
Not having a horse in this race I normally support those countries that field Utd players but this year I am going totally with Portugal and the Netherlands.
I cant wait to see how the Netherlands progress and for our new season to begin.

I mean, it was OK, but think what we could do if we stuck to our traditions of a British manager playing 442!
--------------------- De Gea ---------------------
---Rafael-------Evans-----Smalling------Buttner---
-----Young------Carrick----Cleverley----Valencia--
---------------Rooney-----Welbeck---------------

JUST GIVE US THE CUP

He needs to work on his high-fiving, because there was only light, awkward contact between him and van Persie. If van Persie is going to run the length of the pitch to get there, the contact needs to be spot on.

In short - Moyes out.

Imagine had United management failed to fire Moyes and sign van Gaal, this forum would have gone crazy after seeing the Netherlands' performance.
It'll be interesting what will happen here for the people who blamed the players if Van Gaal comes in and signs only 1 player and we still are vastly superior to last season.

Its not outside the realms of possibility, i mean i didnt give the Netherlands a chance vs Spain given the type of players they have. Either way god i'm glad Moyes is gone and we have someone like Van Gaal in!

Like van Bommel said he is a fantastic coach but he is a strange guy. It's not easy to get along with him but he can make a team play great football.

If our players can put their personal pride aside and concentrate on football instead we will be in for a good season.

Van persie had that ,well, everything back.

Hes going to make a serious captain over the next couple of years.

You could just see the massive difference in his persona, body language and play. He was like he was in his first season with us. If he stays fit next season then he will score 30goals. He's back to beast mode.

It's worrying how happy he makes RVP. I've never seen him smile so much.

I'll tell you what though, if RVP is playing like that next season and stays fit throughout, we are already gonna finish a lot better than we did this season regardless of our transfers.

I think it all boils down to "in LVG we trust". Players, fans and the media, he deserves to be given the opportunity to do what he thinks is best for the club.
I think Rooney should not play a major role going forward but if LVG thinks he is a crucial part of our future set-up who am I to disagree.

Remember when some people on here were claiming van Gaal is as unproven as Giggs?

Things would have looked different if Sneijder had scored in the first 10 minutes.
