Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

I bet the Costa Ricans didn't expect that at all. Would probably had been practising penalties looking at videos of the wrong keeper.

Genius.

This is what I was thinking too.

Avenge all of Netherlands World Cup final losses in one tournament?

5-1 Spain.
Knocks out Argentina in the semi final?
And then wins it against the Germans?

But in all seriousness, every time we concede a penalty next season the commentator is going to mull if he'll bring on the sub goalkeeper. That could get old... fast.

Baffled with the decision to keep van Persie on the field so long after his atrocity of a turnout.

It would be fecking wonderful if we took the World Cup winning manager home.

King Louis, balls of steel. That was a huge call bringing on Krul, what a manager we have. He will attract players to United.
The Iron Tulip is coming to take the league by storm:devil:

He didn't guess, he knew. Like he indicated when he gestured to one of their players - Netherlands had done their due dilligence on Costa Rica's shooters

Or maybe not!

Krul: 'We had looked at them, but we didn't learn anything. The power was standing still and then going in. Me and Frans Hoek worked on it'

Hoek will make de Gea a even bigger beast on pens!

Here's us thinking an early exit for the Dutch would be best for United....

Van Gaal's performance and attitude in this tournament is going to have a massive effect for us on players, fans and (very importantly) with re-instil the fear of god in to our opponents.

:devil::devil::devil:

I'm going to be disappointed if we don't win the league and both cups now.

Seriously, the man is brilliant.

Scored the first Peno and had a chance cleared off the line?

He wasn't his best by a stretch, pretty poor game - but there were no defensive subs whatsoever, whom was he to replace him with, you gonk?

I think the commentators got it wrong, he didn't bring him because "he is better at stopping pens". He was substituted on to mess with their minds, every player would be thinking, "he has brought keeper on for pens, he must be good that with all the shit talking he did."

To bring a keeper on purely to mess with a teams mindset because they are known for good penalty's shows what a fantastic managerial level he is on.

If I was a current United player cruising along comfortably, I'd be shitting myself. Van Gaal is going to shake this club up. No more favourites, no more first names on the team sheet. He could really get the best out of the likes of Jones and Wellbeck. Who wouldn't want to play for him?

Krul dived the correct way every time and nearly got to 2 of the ones that went in.
It was always going to be hard to break them down. Krul would if done nothing but face penalties and get briefed and told to do everything to gain an advantage putting them off.
fecking hell, he thinks of everything. Big, big balls.

I love it that he is a bit of a maverick who doesn't give a feck. Just the fact that he can change tactics effectively within a match and make fecking bold calls is enough to have me salivating over next season after the dirge of the last one.

Let's not forget who else was involved in that win today.

Frans Hoek.

Guess where he'll be next season? :D

Bizarre sub today, first time I can really find anything to criticize. The only thing I can think is that they just spent a couple of training session loading Krul up with all the information on how the Costa ricans take penalties.

I would say this was the plan before the game. The current keeper would have been psychologically fatigued, he would not have been in a state for gamesmanship, something that works at penalties nor may he have been able to recall the research they likely did on each player.

Krul went the right way for every single penalty, they practiced a lot for this probably after seeing how great Costa Rica's penalties were.

He's a god. Other managers use sub to get penalty taker, he used it to get specialized penalty Gk.

Just incredible..

Saving two penalties in 20 doesn't constitute specialised. That said, Louis van Gaal is a level above the likes of Moyes tactically therefore I think he prepered this goalkeeper for this scenario specifically.

"If i'd have taken off the keeper then everyone would've said 'what're you doing?'"

*Van Gaal: "Lolololol"

I think Fergie contemplated something similar in 2005 in the FA Cup final v Arsenal. Carroll was in goal and I distinctly remember the commentator mention something about movement on the Utd bench from Howard (had been a decent pen saver for us). Carroll stayed on and Arsenal scored 5...

I'm surprised more managers don't do it as it is a specialty.

Usually by that point though all 3 subs have been used up
