Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Liverpool fans are shitting themselves and rightly so.

United have a manager who knows his apples again and expected to spend big. Arsenal looking likely to get Sanchez, City and Chelsea becoming the irresistible force and the immovable objects of the top four and Liverpool are selling the player who was probably worth, on his own, about 20 points difference to them last year and embarking on a Tottenham level spending spree, including half of Southampton's first team.

Why wouldn't you be worried as a Liverpool fan? Holding onto top four will be perhaps the hardest challenge they've faced in many years and I don't think their over-rated "they'll score 3 we'll score 4" managerial philosophy is likely to luck-out in two consecutive seasons.

And of course Stevie G and his dodgy knee is another year older. :)

Year older plus the CL to contend with. Lucky for him he got a bit of a summer off or he'd have been in serious trouble come winter. Still might be.

Don't take this the wrong way, but some of these posts about us returning to form next season with LvG in charge is a little bit too close to "And there is nothing you can do about it Meester Ferguson" for comfort.

I just want the season to start and see how we kick on from there.

The British media actually love van Gaal. They've been up his arse all tournament

I know he's been getting loads of (undue) praise by the media as Netherlands manager so far this tournament, but everyone seems to be conveniently ignoring the fact that the Dutch have been feckin' awful to watch in all of their last three matches. Scraped past Mexico with a Robben dive, scraped past Costa bloody Rica on penalties, and then justice is finally delivered by Argentina.

I hope he'll set us up differently, because if he has us playing like he's got The Netherlands playing then we're in for a feckin' dull season.

The Dutch have exceeded expectations.

Their team is really not that good. I expect a different brand of football eventually with the players he'll have available at United.

Who the feck cares. With the team he had on his hands getting into the semis is brilliant work. As long as he makes us win games I dont give a flying horseshit to how we play

Have you seen the players he had to work with? And against Costa Rica they were unlucky.

That Dutch squad isnt too great. He's doing the best with what he's got to be fair.

I think our fans have been extremely over the top with how amazing he is and what he can do for us.

Yes, better than Moyes, but let's just see what he can do before we start celebrating our return to the top.

Incidentally, I was shocked at his decision to let Vlaar (who looked like he was shitting himself) take the first penalty.

Well... plenty of people care. That's why the Stretford End chant "Attack! Attack! Attack!", not "Success! Success! Success!".

For a squad with so many limitations he's done exceptionally. Playing Janmaat as a central defender more often than not has gotta be a masterstroke.

I am however disappointed to see Clasie in only 1 game, and being forced to play the "De Jong"-role, when he's not really one naturally.

How is a team who struggled against Belgium, Switzerland, Nigeria and Iran going through "justice"?

You seem hilariously bitter already for some reason. He got a Holland side that many people were doubting the ability to get out of the group within a penalty shootout of the final playing a system he decided upon five minutes before the tournament started. If you think the praise he gets is undue then we really are in for a feckin' dull season with you.

Fantastic run for the Dutch without one of their most influential players (Strootman). LvG definitely had them punching above their weight, which is a fantastic sign as he comes to OT.

He's playing out of role but in the right position. He's a good defensive midfielder but not a proper stationary one. He can get forward and pass the ball well too.

Worked brilliantly for Fergie the last couple of years. If LVG can reproduce anything lose to that and makes us forget that Ginger mistake ppl will be fine.
He made the most out of that Netherlands team, if he can do the same here Im happy

Er, what? Personal attacks aside (thanks for those), you think the Dutch have been entertaining, bar the drubbing of Spain? I'm not doubting that he can bring success -- so keep fighting that straw man -- I'm just saying they've been playing crap football, and it's been highly disappointing. I hope he doesn't bring that system to us.

On one hand it's to his credit that he took such a poor side so far.
On the other hand, could he really not dig up someone less appalling than Kuyt?

RVP has been sick the past few days. Leaving him on wouldn't have been a good idea. Huntelaar is a great penalty taker. Cillessen just failed miserably.

I think he just made the best of what he had. The Netherlands are not a very strong team... at all. I would say at most times they are quite a one-man team, this WC it's all about Robben. That's why he's always emphasizing how he tried to make his side "tough to beat". They have mediocre defenders and goalkeepers.

Half of their team plays in the Dutch league. Think he's done quite well with them. Apart from Robben and Rvp, there isn't really any quality.

Shocked he took RvP off as it was blatantly obvious it was heading to penalties. To not bring Krul on either after his comments from the last game was strange too.

He's done a great job with them though, when all said and done it is an extremely limited squad of players.

RVP clearly did not look well. He had no option.

Made some terrible decisions today, should have let RVP stay on for the penalties, and brought on Tim Krul, and why did he let Vlaar take the first penalty?
Did you watch the game? RvP could barely run let alone stay on for another half. He was fecked. Bringing on Huntelaar changed the game and allowed the Dutch to have their best spell.

I think the criticism of Cillessen is harsh. If anything, because of what happened in the last match, everyone was thinking he needs to prove himself. You don't really expect the keepers to save penalties yet today this guy should have? Granted he should have kept out Maxi's penalty, it was Vlaar and Sneijder who truly cost them.

Completely agree. He's not Sir Alex. He's one of a number of very good managers, and a return to the top is far from guaranteed.
And I still think things could go extremely well but could also go horribly wrong under Van Gaal.

How many are really expecting LVG to start straight after the World Cup finishes, FFS the man deserves a holiday, just like everybody else.
He is stepping in to a big job of rebuilding with us as well. I would hope he can get a week or 2 at least before he starts with us, he will need some sort of breather mentally. The other thing I wonder is do people understand it might take a season or 2 for us to be top 2 again.

If he would change him, he had to do it earlier imo, not at that time, while it was a bit obvious that we would go to penalties. Bullshite, RVP ran more than the team average, 12 km. The guy was OK.
