Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Redcafe havent proven to be the most objective, on a different site (voetbalzone, a site which doesnt contain 99 percent United fans), no one has come up with the fact that he wasnt fit.
Then I guess that lvg just didn't fancy rvp taking a penalty and thought "feck it, vlaar's had a blinder, let's see if he can do a Messi and stick it top bins".

OR... He thought he could get a goal and put on Huntelaar to score, knowing he was just as good a penalty taker as RvP.

You're arguing about a decision that wasn't even important.

Did well in general. Nothing we've seen should change our opinion of him either way though, he was very much a proven quantity before the WC even started (in both his positives and his negatives).

Not sure he'll have the luxury of a real holiday as I'd imagine there's a lot of work he wants to get through before the season starts. Strikes me as the kind of guy who'll want to get everyone doing things his way asap.

Disappointed in van Gaal tonight, made some weird decisions (might have been forced) and was too conservative. Should've tried to test the weak Argie defence more.

I think he had every right to be conservative. Just look at the guys playing for him, most of them are average players. He plays too open and Messi and Higuain/Aguero have more space to work with.

He messed up the penalty takers but all in all think he did well to get this side out of the group never mind make the semis.

It is not his fault that Sneijder was so poor. Lot of good moves got broken as final pass didn't come from him. Add to that RvP having off game. As a manager you can change tactics, motivate players etc etc but in the end players need to do their job. I don't want to blame this Dutch team because they did well reaching till here but I don't think anything was wrong with Van Gaal's tactics.

1 shot in 120 minutes speaks for itself. I doubt you can blame all that on the players. 0 goals in 240 minutes...

So much for a manager that prefers 'total football'.

I think he's been awesome this tournament, just not the last two games.

Its okay lads, the ABU's have spoken, Van Gaal is shit again. No need to continue the debate.

Took a average side to the semis and went out on pens, expectation before the tournament wasn't very high with most people expecting them to go out at the group stage so they did well.

But I a member also a bit surprised or even shocked by van Gaal's tactics and mentality tonight. It was Argentina not Germany

Van Gaal did very well, all in all. That Dutch side is really quite poor. I don't think RVP had a remotely good tournament either, barring his header.

To reach the semis with that side is the mark of someone competent, at least.

As for charges of conservatism, I'd say that was just a case of LVG being pragmatic. He really didn't have any other options here, this is a very weak Dutch team.

He won't approach things in the same way with us. If he does then he really will deserve criticism.

I don't think any other manager would have done anything better with this squad. Also, instead of talking made up nonsense, show me a quote where Van Gaal said that he will play total football with this team.

It hurt typing that, didn't it?

Phh LvG is shite now then let's feck him off. Have you seen the state of the team? the squad is generally terrible, how they even reached a World Cup semi final in the first place is the real question.

He did brilliantly this tournament and certainly increased his already high stock before arriving here. Without question. Humbling Spain, winning a group of death with maximum points, getting to the Semis, the Krul thing. All box office and very encouraging.

Still, the Vlaar call was a daft one.

Now, lets see how he does in a new league, with a different set of players. We'll certainly give him a lot of leeway.

Vastly overachieved with a side that was filled with many Eredivisie level players and was rather toothless bar one player as his second best player looked really jaded and underperformed past the group stages.

Did so well with the current Dutch players, half of them aren't even fit for a top 10 side in England.

You can bash his tactics tonight and the choice of one or two players with good reason but when you have that amount of possession in control you still expect to create a chance or two. Defence apart - the players deserve criticism in how poor they were. Sneijder & Kuyt forgetting how to cross a ball was particularly painful.

On one hand it's to his credit that he took such a poor side so far.
On the other hand, could he really not dig up someone less appalling than Kuyt?
As you pointed out, it's an average side LVG had to work with. Not really sure why you're singling out Kuyt. Thought he played well enough.

I like Van Gaal. Seems an amusing and nice guy.

I still think he's quite a flawed manager though, but not necessarily for the United job.

What does that even mean? every manger has flaws. I could randomly say that Wenger is a flawed manager for going as long as eight odd years without a trophy.

That's probably Louie's fault now too.

He's a tiny bit more than competent considering his varied approach to tactics throughout the tournament. Especially after losing his main man, Strootman. Couldn't be happier he's our manager.

Did incredibly well to get so far with such a weak team, thought there was nothing between them and Argentina either. Netherlands had more possession and only 1 shot less so I'm not sure why people think they just parked the bus. In the first half they were on the back foot but apart from that they showed a lot more desire to actually make something happen then Argentina did, they just couldn't make a chance.

People calling him on the Vlaar pen, he's just confirmed he had 2 people decline to take the first kick.

I will do feck all for you with that tone.

I know he's been getting loads of (undue) praise by the media as Netherlands manager so far this tournament, but everyone seems to be conveniently ignoring the fact that the Dutch have been feckin' awful to watch in all of their last three matches. Scraped past Mexico with a Robben dive, scraped past Costa bloody Rica on penalties, and then justice is finally delivered by Argentina.

I hope he'll set us up differently, because if he has us playing like he's got The Netherlands playing then we're in for a feckin' dull season.
I believe this is a knee-jerk reaction. This Dutch team isn't anything special. Strootman was ruled out, Van Persie wasn't fully fit, Sneijder isn't the same player (though he started performing after he scored the goal against Mexico), and the defence is nothing special. LvG had a reason to use the 5-3-2 and it worked for him. Surely, when you look at context, you'd rather have that than play 4-3-3 from the start and have the deficiencies of the team exposed?

Louis van Gaal: 'I thought it was necessary to take out Van Persie, because he was on his last legs and he wasn't a target man anymore'

Stop lying Louis, the people of the cafe have spoken. You made a mistake.

Try not to draw your own fecking conclusions when you read other people's posts.

I seriously doubt LvG would make a decision like that. I don't think any manager would.

I am sure LvG would be overjoyed that alastair from the caf rates him as at least, competent.

Who the feck can play total football with these lots? Most are frankly below average

Who the feck cares. With the team he had on his hands getting into the semis is brilliant work. As long as he makes us win games I dont give a flying horseshit to how we play

Honest question would you be satisfied if we ground out 1-0 victories every week playing tumescent football?

Setting aside the fact that United as a club is built on the philosophy of attacking football and thats what the majority of our fans expect (especially the match going fans). Don't you get enjoyment from watching entertaining football?

If we just stank out Old Trafford out every week grinding out 1-0 wins would there even be any point watching the games at all, might as well just check the score after the match to see if we have won.

BTW i think LVG will have us playing entertaining football before long.

Good then, it will at least spare me reading bullshit.

I seriously doubt LvG would make a decision like that. I don't think any manager would.

Who else made it? At the very least he signed off on it.

It's a lesser quibble, but it'd be remiss to just ignore it. Considering he took all the plaudits for the Krul gamble.

Can't wait for this season to start, van Gaal is going to be good for us, I have no doubts about it. He knows what he's doing and did very well with that Dutch team, surpassed expectations and we are all right to be very optimistic with him taking charge. We really do need to start offloading players he doesn't want so we can bring in a top CB, cover for Evra, ideally a marquee signing like Vidal if possible to partner Herrera and a quality winger too. If we can do all that then we should get back to reclaiming the league sooner than many think.
