Not going to lie, I've used rape as a word things like this. A lot of people just don't think about how horrible rape really is.

But on the other hand, a lot of people say 'we're going to kill them', 'Brazil just got murdered on the pitch', etc. Murder is still a very serious crime, yet no one bats an eyelid when the word is used in that way.

Yes, that's because in contrast to brave, stoical men 'not batting an eyelid' about murder, we hysterical women have to make a fuss about rape.

Two wrongs dont make a right. Just because the phrase "murder them" isnt being called out as an issue doesnt make it ok for the use of the rape term.

I would rather be raped than have what happened to David Luiz happen to me.

Is this ok?

Its totally okay to say ''murder'' in football terms.. but no, never rape #feminism

Although I will not state my opinion (as in, whether I agree with the backlash or not) on this matter for personal reasons, the fact that you think rape is only a problem for women is beyond idiotic.

Rape is more visceral because the victims are usually still alive. Wouldn't you say ?

Also, should we continue to use rape just because there are perceived double standards with "murder" or other words that haven't yet been challenged ?

Ehh no. It actually sounds worse. Best to not use it at all.

We've recently been handing out infractions for it.

Hmmm. I once saw a friends dead body after he was beaten to death. Was that not visceral?

I suppose we can eliminate everyone who has witnessed murder from the discussion then.

Or people who have had a relative killed. Or murdered.

Words are descriptive. Harsh words are used to describe harsh outcomes. We shouldn't eliminate any words because some might be offended. They are words, not acts. There are lines that are crossed, like showing pics, as the OP said happened (personally, I didn't look at it.) But words are just words. The more power you give them over you, the more you can be a victim.

Well there you go....

In the early days of the CAF it wasn't uncommon for people to use racist and offensive terms, I suppose society has evolved a bit.

Don't hold your breath waiting for promotion, you two.

In any case, someone who's being raped can potentially be murdered too; hence the backlash when the rape metaphor is used (by idiots).

And likening the victory or loss of a football match to rape in this manner is just sad. I mean think about how it applies to the women in your own lives.

Of course, I agree with you. It's just odd how people don't really care when 'murder' is used like that but dislike it when 'rape' is used. Murder is not exactly a victimless crime.

Strange isn't it.

"That's Gay" is another one that is slowly being done away with.

Yes, yes - people are offended by anything these days, insert Stephen Fry quote, and so forth. But this is an ugly and not even apt metaphor which grown-ups should refrain from using, if nothing else because it makes them sound like twelve year old kids - and not very bright ones at that.

You should only be allowed to use the term "x team won the match". Everything else is trivializing some criminal act.

Although there are a few exceptions as always, it is usually the kids and early twenty somethings that say it.

Well said.

The comparison to murder is silly. There isn't a widespread longstanding problem in society of people not taking murder seriously enough.

It's about as apt a comparison as making fun of people for their sticky out ears and making fun of people for their black skin.
