Arturo Vidal

Don't underestimate Madrid's muppetry. They sign players for the sake of it even if they're not needed, anything to placate their ADHD fans and board members. Bayern are also an option - Yes I know Vidal has suggested he'd only move to England or Spain but I think Guardiola is a big fan and now that they've more or less sold Kroos he might try and entice Vidal.

I don't think Guardiola's a big fan at all - Vidal doesn't seem his type at all, he's not a passing tidy midfielder operating in tight spaces making 150 passes a game but a box-to-box with lots of energy and desire to make things happen. Besides Vidal has said that he won't join another German club out of loyalty to Bayer Leverkusen back in 2010 or 2011 when Bayern wanted him and he went to Juventus instead despite them being significantly weaker at the time.

As for Real Madrid, I think they'll tie Kroos up in a matter of a couple weeks and then move on to the next flavour of the month - Rodriguez - to replace a perfectly good Di Maria as well as look for a forward to replace a perfectly good Benzema. They're not going to replace Modric with Vidal IMO.

When you're selling there isn't necessarily a fixed price. Sometimes a club will say "£20M and he's yours" and that's it. But that tends to be for players they want to get rid of quickly. However other times its open ended. They may have a figure in mind they'll accept as a minimum, but they're not telling anyone, and they'll squeeze more out if they can.

So going in with a high figure is pointless, because whatever figure you go in with first they'll just want a little more. If you bang £45M on the table for Vidal tomorrow, that doesn't mean the transfer will happen quicker. They'll still try and squeeze you for more. Why wouldn't they? They can take as long as they want over this. Vidal is a very sellable asset, they also have Pogba worth a tonne with a few clubs sniffing around him. They dont need the money to stay afloat. So they can take as long as needed to get a decent deal.

And if you bang a stupid £60M offer on the table as a take it or leave it, well, that just shows how desperate you are. You can claim you'll walk away but if you're offering crazy money then clearly you wont. You're just creating an auction with yourself.

That's even before you go into payment structures.

In the end the selling club holds the cards on timescales. Its nothing to do with dithering.

Thing that works in our favour is that we need Vidal just as much as Juventus need money if they want transfers. Iturbe has already gone to Roma apparently, they cannot afford missing out on more targets. We have something they value too in Evra, if they don't give us Vidal they'll have to spend €10m or more on a new left back at the same level.

Oh yeah, I'm sure they'll sell him in the end (to someone), I don't think that's a problem. I just think that its not a fire-sale scenario and it might tick over for a few weeks.

What if Vidal wants to join his buddy at Arsenal? They ARE looking for another central midfielder and seemingly want to spend big....

Extremely sensible post. Get out.

We lost Hazard and Lucas Moura for 5M once
That was in the Fergie & Gill 'no value' days though, signing mop head for 30 odd mil and splashing the same price for Shaw and Herrera looks like we've abandoned that motif.

I love how the caf every summer has one player they get totally fixated on, following his every fart, only for him never to sign.

Is there a VidalCafe yet?

Agnelli: Hi SAF, I called you because Lippi is on holiday and told me that if I need a quick advice I call you
SAF: Erm ok
Agnelli: Well I have this guy Vidal. He's a bit old and has a knee problem so I was wondering if I can find a replacement for him.
SAF: truly?
Agnelli: Yeah, do you know of a quality midfielder who can replace him?
SAF: Hmm Manchester United got one and guess what? He's a Belgian International. We spent 27m on him last year and he can play as defensive midfielder and as an attacking midfielder.
Agnelli: So he must be good eh. However I presume you wont sell the guy right?
SAF: Well we dont usually sell our stars but Juventus has always treated us fair. Maybe we cant arrange a swap deal. We take Vidal and you take Fellaini?
Agnelli: Sure. Feck Im getting a United top player who can play in so many roles!!! Conte will be thrilled!!!
SAF: Erm it would be better if you don't tell him about it. Let seal the deal and then you can give him a surprise right?
Agnelli: Great!!! I am sure that he will love it.

There's very little advantage to Juve in hurrying this. If they do accept they are selling Vidal or Pogba then waiting for two weeks to see if any bidders appear is no big deal for them.

There may not even be much advantage to United. One of those Chilean articles that talked about United looking at his medical treatment also mentioned that he's expected to be ready to train normally (ie: without painkillers etc) in 4 weeks. It might be that we want to hold off on a medical until there's a reasonable chance that we're looking at a healing knee rather than an inflamed one.

The only ways the press story pattern (Italy, Chile, Spain thinking it's mostly on, the Brits sounding clueless) makes sense is if either his agent is fabricating the entire thing or we're actually mid-negotiation and using go-betweens as required. I think it's the latter, but the only solid indication I can point to there is Andy Mitten thinks we're doing something.

Did they literally send their doc out to Barbados or wherever then? Or do they just trust some local quack?
Normally send their own doctor over to do it. Look at Ozil last season he was on international duty with Germany and Arsenal sent a doctor over to conduct the medical over there so its possible they can do the same with Vidal providing theres sufficient facilities over there for them to complete the medical. Also do we really need to give him a medical we should be signing him up anyway.

I was wondering this too. If we are looking at him then Arsenal must be at least a little bit interested also?

EDIT: Forgot about Khedira

I see your point.

But they have to start planning for replacements too right. If everything gets held back Vidal gets annoyed as does Pogba if true, other players dont like the way they are being treated or visa verca your still paying their wages for a month which would be best part of a mil for the both of them (probably under). All these things add up. Free up some cash to sign players they need to replace them.

I always just think Utd are slow at this stage every time! It's like they get deals agreed almost and verbally but then someone else comes in while they are waiting to put in final offer. Classic Utd with all big names we go for.

However lets hope this is just Utd waiting for LVG to confirm or something similar or the player to get back from hol's etc etc.

Be interesting to hear new coaches press conference but assume he'll say he expects no out goings and wants all players he currently has.

we've laid the groundwork...

Concha y Toro as our wine sponsor (a new devil is arriving George!)
We had the Chilean miners over

What more do we need to do

Arsenal get sanchez and Khedira, Chelsea have Matic and Fabregas...... we got Tom and Carrick

Also the delay in the transfer is the fact the club most likely dont want to sell, whereas most transfers that have been completed are by clubs who have met release clauses or have bought players from clubs who didnt want them, such as Sanchez, Fabregas and now most likely Khediera. Vidal is wanted by Juve and as such it will take a bit of time to sort everything out and who knows they might be trying to get Nani and Evra as part of the deal.

Yes but Ferguson was conservative about these things which was sometimes frustrating. Not too fussed about Moura but Hazard would have been great.

If only we could sign some young promising midfielder. Preferably from Spain.

Even if Vidal is up for sale he will 100% say he's not available at any price. He really can't say anything else.

Not necessarily. If they are now resigned to selling him it's possible that it'll be the the of the PR exercise where they concede that he could be moving for whatever reason suits their narrative.

Unless they've actually agreed a fee with United they would completely undermine their negotiations if they said he's definitely on his way out.

If they have agreed a fee with United then it's game over. Can only be a matter of minutes before the transfer is formally announced.

In less than 3 hours hopefully this will have more clarity for better or for worse.

It really wouldn't.

Juve will drop the predictable "best players not for sale" rhetoric to save public face, and they still might end up selling him. Clubs do it all the time.
