Malaysian Plane crashes over the Ukraine | 17th July 2014

I know one thing for sure, I'm not flying with Malaysian Airline any time soon... 60% chance you'll land safely for feck sake. RIP.

Analysis: Jonathan Beale, BBC News
A defence expert has told the BBC that shooting down a plane at 10,000m (9.7 miles) would have required a long- range surface-to-air missile - possibly guided by radar.

That suggests it is unlikely it could have been downed by a portable air defence missile, or Manpad, which has a much shorter range.

The only other possibility is for an aircraft at that height to be downed by a fighter carrying air-to-air missiles.

The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify ultra-violet plumes if a long-range surface-to-air missile was fired.
If they can see where the missile was fired from it will be easy to decide who was responsible for this

Understandable. It's just a shame because before this year, they had a fantastic safety record. Not sure how they're going to recover from this.

Not sure what they could have done here if it was shot down by a missile.

I know. But regardless, people are going to think twice before booking a Malaysian airline flight now, especially with the previous incident of the missing plane. Bad luck, superstition and whatnot.

I work on Trent engines in Malaysia's neighbouring country and my other half is a cabin crew. She also has relatives working in Malaysia Airlines. It's terrible news to hear. :(

Fecking hell, some of the pictures coming out from it are awful. At least 100 bodies seen and body parts scattered around up to 15km away apparently.

:(

One question. Does it make sense for that air corridor to be used for civil flights when planes have been shot down recently? In such a long haul flight does it make that much difference in the cost to go through another nearby border? Looks like an unnecessary risk, few days after a cargo plane has been shot down in the same place...

Unbelievable this sort of thing is still happening. You'd imagine repercussions will be had for this.

Ukrainian military confirms it has not fired at any air targets, as do the separatists apparently. Leaves the Russians to explain whether or not they have.

I was going to post the same thing.

Shouldn't they have been advised to take a route that avoided that region?

Not anymore it doesn't. Sadly, the aviation industry can only use hindsight to improve safety measures.

I'm not sure if this is covered under insurance. The other missing jet is covered by insurance and they've made payouts already to the families.

Would seem odd. Surely there are loads of airplanes crossing that airspace on regular basis?

Ukrainian Foreign Minister saying it was a BUK Missile system that shot it down.

Could be an untrained unit on the Russian border. They've probably been given orders to shoot down Ukrainian transport planes from behind the Russian border and thought it was a Ukrainian transport (probably an untrained or cavalier individual who made a mistake).

Fecking Hell :( Half an hour ago I was on the flightradar24 website tracking my girlfriend's flight (Sofia-Valencia) and then the website froze and saw the tweet about the Malaysia Airlines crash. Still can't believe this has happened, these poor people and their families...just speechless.

This would be my guess, too.

What about the tower guys? Aren't they supposed to get in contact with the airplane and request identification etc and order them to turn around/ not enter the airspace or whatever? Can't believe no prior checks would be made and a nervous guy just pulls the trigger.

Unless there was no response perhaps. All strange.

295 lives just like that... lost over something that they are not a part of, over some people's desire for power.

On twitter feed there's a picture of a dead baby on the field, and it just broke my heart.

It has happened before.

We always say this with events like this and it never happens. Truth is that no one will take on Russia.

Well none of the big boys usually take a lot of beating for these things but some pawn inbetween would get slaughtered and in this case I assume they'll make a blast crater out of Ukraine's east side.

Not if they are given orders to shoot down planes. Its quite likely the pressure to get a quick shootdown for political purposes trumped any sort of civilized procedures to deconflict what the plane is.

Also, now hearing that Russian COL Igor Strelkov, a Russian Commander who is Putin's man on the ground in Donbass, tweeted that his forces brought down an Antonov 26, just before the Malaysian flight was reported as going down. Strelkov is quite likely in touch with his troops across the Russian border and thought he was breaking some positive information that they had downed another Ukrainian transport plane, but in fact, the Russians likely shot down the Malaysian plane.

See the last para.
