Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

The only thing I'm worried about is the signings. We all know after a few weeks he's going to realise the team needs them, so it's a worry we could be doing things last minute again, which wasn't a great decision last year.

If true, it's ridiculous. We are going to be on another last minute trolley dash.

Edwin Van Der Saar 2 years a pro, free
Michael Reiziger < 1 million, was a striker the year befor
Danny Blind Not wanted in bigger leagues
Frank De Boer about 22
Frank Rijkaard 34, free from Milan
Clarence Seedorf 17
Edgar Davids about 22
Jari Litmanen about 22, < 1 million
Finidi George about 21 < 1 million
Ronald De Boer about 22 < 1 million
Marc Overmars about 22 < 4 million

With Winston Bogarde, Nwankwo Kanu and Patrick Kluivert on the bench:
About 23, 45 and 18.

Might be a year off, might not get the transfer fee in pounds completely right. The point is they were big names after that. This was really a very young team with just one big name.

Fixed.

Good article on Van Gaal and how methods with the Netherlands might translate at United :

http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/d...ating-Van-Gaals-Manchester-United-Next-Season

The thing is he only played that system at the world cup. Did the writer suddenly think "oh look, Van Gaal is United manager, I'll watch 6 Holland games at the World Cup and write an article about his style of play."
Did he realise that up till the start of the WC he didn't use this system (It was only when Strootman got injured that they changed their plans). The team was set up to beat Spain perfectly, by soaking up pressure with brilliant defensive tactics and hit them on the break with Robben.
I'm just shocked that anyone could think Van Gaal is a defensive manager who likes to play on the break. It's completely against his footballing philosophy FFS.

Doubt he'll do anything other than play 4-3-3. He lost Strootman which made him feel uncertain about playing his preferred style at the World Cup. He didn't feel Holland could dominate the ball enough not to be vulnerable, he was right, and Sneijder also failed to turn up mostly. With United I'd expect Van Gaal to return to type. He has a box-to-box midfielder in Herrera and a clutch of attacking midfield players, the only question marks are over the midfield anchor but I'm sure that will get sorted even in Carrick's absence.

'He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight' - Jim Gordon, the Dark Knight

Not enough CBs for that. We'll play 4-3-3 if we were to set up like holland--3 midfielders and 2 central defenders with Mata behind Rooney and RVP.

Too many average defenders and midfielders, a 532 is the only one option at the moment.

With Holland he had a really mediocre side, with only Robben and Van Persie as good players.
He was forced to play in that way, or would have been a catastrophe.

De Gea

Rafael Jones Smalling Evans Shaw

Valencia Herrera Mata

Van Persie Rooney

Yes that was what I was thinking as well at first. But perhaps the article has some truth in the sense that that some of those core values are transferable irrespective of formation particularly against heavy possession oriented teams like maybe the next time we play against Bayern or Barcelona. A bit like Real Madrid who usually like to take control of games in their 4-3-3/ 4-4-2 hybrid but were willing to relent possession against Bayern, soak up the pressure and struck on the counter. In saying that we don't really have their blistering pace right now but it can be remedied over the next few transfer windows.

I'd be worried if he doesn't sign players until after the US tour we made the same mistake last season assessing the squad when it's quite clear we have a lot of players not up to the standard and with Carrick out for 3 months surely a midfielder needs to be signed immediately or we risk scrapping the bottom of the barrel trying to get players in.

"Van Gaal's training regime has impressed the United players, in particular new signing Ander Herrera, who revealed there has been a lot of emphasis on ball-work."

It bet it is!

He also said the coaches want the players to want to have the ball, and keep possession of the ball.

Is he being forced to show he's wearing a Hublot watch? Maybe that's what he was talking about with the commercial side of things.

That's great to hear.

In hindsight TBF my biggest worry was some of the younger lads not progressing to their max potential during Moyes' tenure - as in focusing less on the ball/ skill aspect and doing more physical endurance/ set piece work. It could have really hampered us in the long term. Van Gaal is the perfect remedy for that. Can't wait to see how he moulds the likes of Adnan, Wilson, Pereira, Lawrence. :D

Something I wrote up on LVG from a presentation on management as well. This guy definitely knows what he's thinking. Such clarity in thought. Enjoy

Interesting quotes:
  • "My mother taught that preparation is half the work. And she only completed primary school."
  • "Training, analysis, and evaluation.....And that's of course not something I can do alone. Because I do not have the wisdom...and you can laugh, because my image says I know everything. I listen to specialists. Do you too?"
  • "You need to surround yourself with a great staff. We need to have the best team to support the players"
  • "Vision is not limited to the game itself. Vision can be applied to people. It can be applied to society."
  • "What unites us? The game and how it's played."
Key points:
  • LVG feels transparency and clarity are key in communicating his philosophy to his players.
  • LVG felt he failed in 2001 with Dutch national team because of an error in his selection process (10 Ajax players who he coached before who didn't take his trust as they did previously). In 2013, he told players they would be selected on form and fitness.
  • LVG also shows his knack for preparation by talking about an index which measures the effect of humidity, wind and temperature on the human body in relation to weather. van Gaal felt being more fit would gives his players a better chancee especially in cases of high humidity.
  • LVG and his team contacted professors to research the best way to deal with jet-lag
  • Trained in Portugal to best mimic the conditions
  • LVG showed his players Barcelona and Spain to demonstrate his philosophy and how he wanted them to play He also used these examples to show how he wanted to improve it. He prefers using a true number 9 rather than a false number like Messi.

You just wrote down what was said in the captions? How is that a write up?

No need to be over critical. It's quite obviously for the benefit of anyone who doesn't want to or can't watch the video.

Maybe, it's the morning and Im cranky / in no mood for people on the forum pretending to be the next messiah in football analysis (not saying OP was trying to do that, just I'm more irritable today)

Morning everyone. I'm the next messiah in football analysis. Come, let me wash your feet in the river of my knowledge.

I have a feeling that LVG will value Kagawa over Mata.

This is interesting to me, we all know Kagawa is a level or two below Mata at the moment however Kagawa would be so wonderfully suited to LvG's system there will surely be a place for him.

Mata is that good leaving him out of the team doesn't seem to be an option either.

And then there is Rooney.
