Arturo Vidal

Alonso is done. Khedira is being sold. Di Maria looks like he is leaving too.
Vidal to Madrid could make sense.

Kroos-Vidal-Modric
and Bale, Ronaldo, Someone else ahead of them

Alonso is not done. He just needs to play less. Illarra will hopefully take 50% of his minutes in the coming season.

If Khedira, Di Maria and Casemiro all leave, we have Isco to cover for Modric and we will have to buy someone to cover for Kroos. This is where Vidal might come into play, but I hope he doesn't. With James coming, it would be too much.

That's life of Real Madrid fan with Perez at the helm. After every WC we buy a new superstar, even if we don't need that player. It's frustrating, but in another way.

I don't see even Madrid going for Vidal right after buying Kroos. But if you did, that would give you three of the top four midfielders in the world last season (Toure being the fourth, probably). That's just... cruel.

It must be awful. I don't know how you cope.

It is, because there are teams out there like United that actually need a player like Vidal. I really hope we don't sign him, because even if we would play the proposed midfield three, someone would be played out of position. None of those three is a DM.

So if Benzema plays CF, where does the supposedly earth-shatteringly expensive Rodriguez fit in?

Benzema is not really a CF. With Ronaldo and Bale on each side, he has to provide service. James can do that. He can rotate with all 3 forwards and we have Jese on the bench. There actually is some sense in this. We're looking at a season where we'll play 60 games and there's a question in the air regarding Ronaldo's knee. Enough minutes for everyone.

So what you're saying is they'd drop Benzema.

I'm sorry, but even Madrid I can't see selling Di Maria, dropping Alonso and Benzema, and basically depriving Isco, Illarramendi, Jese and Casemiro of any real chance of starting more than the odd game here and there, all in one summer. Selling arguably your second-most important player from last season in order to accommodate James is Madrid-level madness, but also dropping Benzema and Alonso would just be stupid. You don't totally gut a side who won the CL so emphatically.

Not drop, James would rotate with Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema. I edited my post adding last two sentences. 60 games long season can accommodate all 4 of them, wouldn't you agree..?

Illara did cost almost 40 mil € and Xabi has 2 more years on his contract. Enough time to integrate Illarra into starting 11 and phase out Xabi. Casemiro has no future here and Di Maria is not getting the contract he wants, not while Perez is running the business. His stock is at all time high and he'll probably want to cash in in this perfect moment (he's at 3 mil €/season net). And another thing to mention, Madrid fans are generally not all that bothered with Di Maria. For 60 mil € no one will shed a tear.

I dont think we're in for him, although Juve have made us an offer for Lukaku, so maybe we could do a Vidal plus cash for Lukaku!

What happens to Modric if Real sign Vidal?

People lose perception, they forget things, events, but managers don't. Modric was the best and most consistent performer in the team last season. He didn't have one bad game. If he keeps his form, he is untouchable and will remain the second name on the team sheet. If he'll play like he did in the world cup, it won't look good for him. I guess/hope that he was just tired after the long season.

Surely he'd take Alonsos role, no?

He played that role in the beginning of the season while Xabi was still injured and he did a good job, but it's not his natural position and you can see it. Xabi does a lot of dirty work, something in which both Modric and Kroos are not nearly as good.

Stop it, I'm going soft here. Someone give me some muppet fuel!

Real haven't had a big money signing this summer yet, just a big signing. They could be very much after him even if they aren't desperate. Hope they get Hummus Rodriguez in a mega money deal to give them their yearly ego boost and hope that makes them move away from Vidal.

How can you possibly know?

That wasn't very helpful. Apologies.
Kroos very keen to come, I imagine because we were going to pay what he wanted given situation we were in.
Deal set up by Moyes and when LVG was in negotiations he agreed to the deal/talks continuing, was happy to proceed with it.
Then he got the job and for an unknown reason changed his mind.
Where real were at this stage in the process I'm not 100% sure but they weren't mentioned and there was huge frustration when LVG changed mind.

I doubt that Real will sign Vidal. Their main target this summer is James Rodriguez, which is why they're selling Di Maria. Now that they've bought Kroos, I think Khedira's time at Madrid is coming to an end. There's no way that the four of Kroos, Modric, James and Vidal will all get to start every match. Don't forget they still have Alonso whom Ancelotti has a soft spot for. Illara will probably get loaned out and I don't know what they will do about Isco. I can see them lining up like this:

Kroos - Modric
Bale - James - Ronaldo
Benzema/Falcao
Or

Kroos - Modric - James
Bale - Benzema/Falcao - Ronaldo
But then again, you can't really know for sure when you are dealing with Real Madrid. Back in the summer of 2009, I said to myself that there's no way that they are gonna buy Ronaldo AND Kaka in the same transfer window. Well, look how that turned out.

Isco and James aren't cover for where they'll most likely play Kroos or Modric, Asier and Xabi are their cover, I seriously wouldn't sell Khedira, at some point, you are going to need his industry. It'd be another epic gain for Wenger from the El Clasico teams chasing stars over a strict tactical setup.

If Barca and Real play their likely super starred up teams, then there are clear weak links for very strong tactical teams on their days. No way the likes of Busy and Modric(no way near as defensive as Busy anyway) can take up all that heavy workload that missing another worker in with them will force upon them. But of course other teams might not even have the time on the ball to take advantage anyway.

Surely he'd take Alonsos role, no?

That's ok, I wouldn't mind that since I wouldn't say it plays to his strengths and will make for an imbalanced midfield.

What happens to Illarramendi? Since now he will be third choice.

We are talking about Real Madrid here, the manager does not always get his way.

Real Madrid are not signing Kroos or Vidal to be bench warmers. Di Maria, one of the very best in Europe last season will be off.

And then I cannot see Modric, Kroos or Vidal being content sitting on the bench knowing they would be one of the best in the world elsewhere.

If they are sticking to their 4-3-3 formation, they will most likely compete for the same positions. Last season, Di Maria was used as a CM where he played brilliantly. I can see them using James there as well.

I can see Madrid wrapping this up within days once he is back from vacation.

James Ducker on United in press states "we get lied to all the time" when talking about Arturo Vidal.

Stay optimistic.

I am sure (see optimism :p) that Vidal is coming to see LVG in the states for his last week of holiday. Then down to Miami when we get to the ICC final on 4th August. A quick chat over a glass of wine and done dealio.

Summer goes from good to brilliant.

Meanwhile the scousers buy Carroll back from WHU for 40M to replace 'it wasn't my fault' suarez.

I hope the last two summers has reminded everyone on the United board that...you strengthen when you are on top!

Securing Vidal will be nigh on impossible if any other big club in Europe come in for him, and without the CL the wages United will have to offer will be massive. But that is the price you pay for watching the team weaken over the last few years.

I watched United in press which has just finished and Ducker seems like he doesn't know for sure if we're interested...

I honestly think that no one knows really, the Carrick injury are pretty strong evidence of that, no one knew anything about it prior to LvG telling at his presser.

IF anyone knew anything about transfers, the information would come from the other end of the deal, hence why most of the speculation comes from Italy/Chile, not that i think it'll happen tho.

He's definitely open to the move, it just depends on whether we're prepared to cough up imo. It's a waiting game, i just hope we don't pull out over a silly couple of million when he could easily be the difference between a good season and a great one.

And it was the same with Shaw all the info came from Shaw entourage and Southampton, at some point the press was convinced that it was off. At the moment Carrington is like Guantanamo we don't know what is happening in there.

James Ducker on MUTV

1 United are saying there has been no contact but the Chilean and Italians are adamant talks have taken place

2 We (Journo's) get lied to all the time.

3 I don't think it will happen but I fear I could end up looking silly.

Did you watch it on MUTV or going by Twitter quotes?
Seen loads of different takes on what he actually said on twitter already.
