Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

I like this.

It's great to see that. The one thing that is largely ignored is Louis' voracious appetite for knowledge, his drive, but most of all, his intellect.

I suppose, in a large sense, we determine certain qualities of a successful manager by aspects related to their character and personality, but a large part of those is driven by intelligence. Attention to detail is intelligence. Tactical knowledge is intelligence. Man-management side of things requires intelligence and a knowledge of how human's respond to certain approaches.

Louis is an intelligent man.

Think we can safely assume Louis was being dead honest when he said he wanted a month to assess his players and then decide on transfers. He is a true anti-muppet and too honest for his own good...

Would not be surprised if we see one or two promoted to the first team and maybe a cheap centerback for cover as our business this summer. Herrera, Shaw and de Vrij maybe.

That's exactly what Moyes said and by the time he realized the need for signings, we were too deep in trouble. I know LVG is better than Moyes, but anyone associated with football know about the quality of our midfield. So if that is not addressed, I genuinely believe we won't make top 4.

WTF? is this? Surely bullshit?

Have no idea who the hell wrote this tweet, whether there's any truth to it and what it's doing in the cocking twitter thread instead of this one but anyway...

IF Woody is exposed as being full of hot air, yet again, it will be so refreshing to hear a manager call him out on his bullshit. Far rather that than Moyes toeing the party line about how we can sign all the best players only to end up with gaping holes in our squad when the season starts.

That's the fella from Sirius XM in the States, they had (maybe still have) some sort of media partnership deal with United. Definitely has sources, called Moyes's sacking, Louis's probable appointment and Shaw's signing well in advance.

So Woodward is a f*cking bluffing c*nt after all.

Agreed with all of that.

About time Woody and the club finally got called out on all the constant bullshit they come out with.

What I like about him is he has the same things I personally like in a team. If he wants a winger in his system he will pick the best winger we have, he won't play a #10 there just because he is a "name". Likewise he will analyse his opponents but with first focus on getting the best out of his team and executing his plan. Far to many times (recently) we haven't gone to play our game, we have gone to stop the opponents play theirs. Also a huge point is he calls it "my team" and "our team". He doesn't say shit like "Manchester United are good" like moyes did he calls them "his" team. He isn't phased.

Misleading headline for those who didn't read the whole thing. He says he'd like the captaincy but says it's the manager's decision and then in an answer to a separate question he says that the team believes it can win the title this season.

Reading between the lines it seems that Rooney sees his role in a Van Gaal team as a striker rather than dropped back into midfield. Interesting to see how the striker situation pans out.

Sir Alex Ferguson to meet Louis van Gaal on Manchester United tour
Sir Alex Ferguson will fly to Washington to meet Louis van Gaal for the first time since the Dutchman became Manchester United manager. The Scot is expected to watch the game against Internazionale before staying on with the club for the meeting with Real Madrid in Detroit a few days later.

While Ferguson and Van Gaal know each other from when they were rival managers during the 72-year-old’s supremely successful career, the Dutchman said last week he is yet to see the now club director since taking charge of United.

United, who defeated LA Galaxy at 7-0 in their opening tour game, are in Denver where they meet Roma in the opening group match of the International Champions Cup on Saturday at Sports Authority Field. Van Gaal’s squad then fly to Washington ahead of playing Internazionale on 30 July at Fedex Field before the trip to Detroit to face Real Madrid on 2 August.

There, Ferguson will be reunited with Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the World Player of the Year who the Scot helped develop when the Portuguese was at United under his management.

Don't think so, certainly hasn't been any talk of one.

Our games come pretty thick and fast now so I wouldn't expect many.

From Rob Dawson (MEN) live blog.

Just a reminder that Louis van Gaal will be holding a press conference at Sports Authority Field today head of the game against Roma tomorrow. We'll be there for that, and the opening training session, so make sure you check back in to see what the Dutchman has had to say.

Agree with that.

"This morning was not a good session. It was 11 v 11 but tonight the positional play was great. They made the pitch big when they had the ball and small when they didn't have it. I see progression every day but also not good things. We are there to improve that.

He doesn't beat around the bush. Says it like it is.

It is why I believe him when he says that he won't make transfers for atleast a few weeks. There is no point muppetizing.

"You have to take into account the qualities of the opponent and give your team structure to do that so in training this morning we had a team playing like Roma and a team playing like United. We gave them structure."

Also pretty interesting how seriously he takes even the preseason matches. Would we have prepared to such levels for a meaningless game under even Fergie?

I think he is testing if the players go through with his plans and see which of the players he can trust early on to follow his methods.

But great to hear we doing a lot of ball work rather than running.

It's interesting that he is giving Cleverley and Blackett 90 minutes. I'd say that's a sure fire sign that those are two positions he is looking at before he buys in. Left defense and central midfield.

Friendly games are not totally meaningless. It's preseason for a reason. And since when Sir Alex did not take games seriously? He would adjust the deployment of his players in terms of importance of games but to even doubt his preparation and training were less than serious is disrespectful of the man

It's also understandable the way LvG goes about business when he's starting new life at United. He has so much to prove, philosophy to implement and authority to stamp... Of course he has to to extra serious. Time is not on his side when the season is starting pretty much immediately after coming back to OT and another friendly

While I agree those are two positions he will be looking to invest in, I don't think a player playing 90mins is a sign of that. If a keeper plays 90mins, I doubt that's a sign of him looking for a new one. If one of the strikers had a full game, I wouldn't see it as a sign of him looking to buy a striker.

Err... that's the point I'm making.

The strikers and keepers aren't getting 90 minutes and our CM and LB options are. It's clear he is using them for 90 minutes to assess what he has.

What if a striker or a keeper was to play 90mins?

I fully understand him using the match to assess certain players but if he wanted to get a good look at say, Will Keane, I doubt that suggests he is looking to sign a striker.

Yes but they are not. That's the point whole point.

They are not this game, how about next game if it was to occur?

What are you on about? Why use hypothetics to make up some sort of pedantic argument?

Our weakest position is midfield. He gave Ander Herrera 90 minutes last game to assess him and now he is giving Cleverley 90 minutes.

At left back, we need a backup option to Shaw. He gave Blackett 45 minutes against LA and now he's going to give him 90 to assess him.

It's clear our problem positions are midfield and defense - he's giving midfielders and defenders 90 minutes while everyone else gets 45. Who cares about "but what if that happened" arguments. "That" isn't happening, "this" is so this is what I'm discussing.

Anyone think we'll get a response from Louis to Mourinho's comments about Shaw's wages?

£120k a week for a young boy is ridiculous but we don't need to be told that by a man who has bought titles in every country he's managed in.
