Realistically, its not looking good for him either. The US isn't exactly going to capitulate to IS's demands, so barring an effective rescue operation, I'd say he's as good as dead unfortunately. He could be dead and they've already filmed his execution, there's no knowing with these animals.

Al-Jazeera (the English version) is certainly not supportive of IS.
I've watched the talking part of the video and that accent is almost certainly Asian British, probaby East London. Appalling.

Unless there is an extremely efficient operation by the security and intelligence services, the chances are high that these feeble-minded inadequates are going to commit a terrorist outrage in Europe when they come back. When you have been fighting a millennial battle for the caliphate, you are not going to come back to London or Birmingham to drive a minicab.
I can only imagine what his family feel watching that. Nick Berg too for that matter (Christ, that was a ghastly one too).

I doubt they intend to come back tbh, they seem quite intent on staying where they are. The issue might be those that sympathise and who haven't had the chance to leave here yet.
I don't think any of them plan on coming back. Some, or most of them, tear up their passports and get issued an Islamic state passport.

There's footage and photos of IS fighters burning their European, Australian and North American passports. It seems that many don't intend on returning and either dying as martyrs, or living a new life in this Islamic State of theirs.
A lot of these young men are tempted with promises of having as many women and wives as they plead, power and the chance to be a part of the 'glorifying restoration of the caliphate'. When you're drawn in by such delusions of grandeur, you're hardly going to go back to be some nobody in London, Bradford or Birmingham.
Also worth noting that these 'mujahids' are treated with tremendous honour in some of the countries they go to, so you're right about not wanting to return to become a nobody.

Why is ISIS so successful at drawing European Muslims into fighting for them ? One would think people who live in the west would have comfortable lives.

I think its down to poor integration. You could argue that conservative Islamic doctrines are incompatible with the secular pillars of European society, thereby creating a crisis of identity. These Muslims, feeling ostracised, are then compelled by these extremist jihadists to be a part of some brotherhood - a chance for an identity, solidarity and to make a name for one's self.
But I'm only generalising and speculating on those insane enough to feel compelled to join the likes of ISIS.

Let me try to explain this as best I can, it might make little sense but yeah. Basically, some Muslims do not cherish/value comfortable lives, they obviously enjoy the privileges they get in european countries but they are in no need for them. There is emphasis on the sunnah of the prophet and some Muslims will even go back to dates and water if thats what they had to go through. Muslims have a real problem in the sense that there is so much corruption, disunity, betrayal etc within their own 'ummah' and they cant bare the fact that they're incapable of doing anything. Islam teaches them unity, brotherhood etc. Muslims, as they will tell you themselves, have become dishonoured and they hate that. They hate it when they see another Muslim dying or getting abused in any part of the world and this is where ISIS comes into play.
Some Muslims want to be very actively involved in bringing an 'Islamic golden era' back into play. They think with their emotion a lot and when ISIS releases these well done promotional materials then it gets to their head. They finally have a state! The caliphate is back! But wait, they're in their comfortable homes amongst disbelievers? but why? They want to be involved and finally protect other Muslims and they are willing to do anything to achieve that target/goal. They want to make Islam the greatest thing for them in the world and the death of a martyr in Islam is the greatest of deaths. I could go on and on about it but there is too much to say. You have to be in their boots.
You can call them idiotic, crazy, lunatics or terrorists or whatever but in their mind they genuinely believe that ISIS are the answer to the problems that Muslims are facing today and why they believe that? What I have mentioned above and many more reasons. Also, its pretty safe to say that they're very much so in the minority because other than Sunni vs Shia, its become Salafi/Wahabbi vs Sufism. Sufis don't approve of the fighting but most Salafis/Wahabbis do.
The Nick Berg video as well as the Korean guy were both gruesome. Also noteworthy that probably far more Muslims are receiving the same treatment from ISIS, than are Christians or others.
This is an important point. Their biggest victims have been Muslims - hundreds of Iraqis and Syrians have been beheaded and their heads placed on pikes.
Also, I would say that the fact that the ISIS appear to be so modern/up to date with technology would also contribute to the whole conundrum. These fighters use many forms of social media and have terrific persuasive skills. They would be great salesmen lol People get the image that they're not simply sheep herders from the middle of the deserts. They're actually young, modern people. Some of these jihadist are very well educated and fully up to date with the affairs of the world. It's then when they reach boiling point.

If im being honest then everyone I know hates ISIS. I make sure to ask preachers, friends etc about these kinds of groups to see what their opinion is and they instantly dismiss the groups and get angry about the whole thing. Especially ISIS, they absolutely hate them. I myself have never been approached by anyone associated with them and neither has anyone I know.
I do believe that the whole thing in regards to ISIS fighters causing problems here is being blown out of proportion currently. I've seen some of these guys twitter and they all disagree with murdering/suicide bombs etcs in the western countries. They're only interested in killing combatants and to a certain extent prisoners. Having said that, I think it would be correct for all governments across the world to keep a very close eye on social media because its only a matter of time before someone gets a bit too crazy and decides to go out and killing random people on the street or decides to recruit people in the masses. But yeah, so far I've not heard of anything to do with the things you've asked about.
Also, some of the things ISIS do are so symbolic that each one of their supporters must get so excited by some of it. Remember when they decided to execute shias and throw them in the river? Khalid ibn Walid did the same when he battled with the Persians. Its all symbolic and well planned.

Why are these people masked? I understand why militants fighting in their home countries might want to cover up to prevent strikes from their enemy on their families/ stop whoever they're fighting targeting/ kidnapping them when they're not fighting but who the hell are these people hiding from? I'm going to assume most of their families, if they exist, don't live with them out there.
The story mentions his experience fighting with islamists in Syria. The relevant authorities probably know the specifics.
It'll lead to investigations at home, could arrest some preachers and stuff. Don't want that happening as it means less people come.
Plus it makes them look well hard.
Fanatical nature of Islam in particular. People are keen to blame Catholicism for their failings and rightly so, but seem less keen to blame Islam for it's own failings, simply blaming "religion" in general.
I'm confused as to the relevance if I'm completely honest but at least I understand why Herman is so angry now....
