Is it just me or does there seem to be a disproportionate number of British residents who've joined extremist groups relative to the US and other Western countries?
Perhaps it's just the coverage they get. The US has had a number of citizens or residents join AQ and ISIS, but it is a fairly small number. There have been fewer than 12 identified who joined ISIS, combined with groups like Al Nusra there have only been "a few dozen" identified. As for Britain, Hague says more than 400 have joined ISIS or other groups while MP Mahmood from Birmingham claims it's upwards of 1500.

You're definitely right. American Muslims seem far better integrated into the US than Muslims here in Europe.
That doesn't explain to me though why the UK has such a disproportionate number vs for example, Germany, France or the Netherlands (or Russia), all of whom also have large Muslim populations (and with France's mostly shunted out to the banlieus with little prospects for a good life).
I know the fighters are a tiny minority but I also don't understand it in the context of all the polls about how British UK Muslims regularly feel in polls conducted in the country.

If I had to come up with a reason, it would be the persistent failure until very recently to crack down on extremist preachers in the UK (something the French were complaining about for years), the very prominent involvement of the UK in wars in the Middle East (above all Iraq) and, more contentiously, the fact that most British Muslims are of Pakistani descent (as opposed to Maghreb), and therefore have cultural links to an area (Punjab/the NW Frontier) which is one of the two historical centres of extremist Islam (along with the Nejd region of the Arabian peninsula).

I know you're quite militant on this issue but please try to read what I said before jumping on it with some more of the 'PC' crap you sent Silva's way earlier.
Even if 100% of Dutch Muslims supported ISIS, quite what that has to do with the 500 or so British Muslims fighting ( which if you weren't so eager to jump on yetanother poster for being too 'PC' you may have seen was the exact word I used) being a mathematical tiny minority of the 3 Million Muslims living in the UK I don't know. If you can't be bothered to do the Maths, that's 0.0167%.

I do know that many of the Moroccans in the Netherlands come from ahem quite poor backgrounds in Morocco (I've heard other Moroccans call them simple and mock/ laugh at them ) and that quite a few Muslims from other areas shun them within the Netherlands. I know its the same here with many of the Pakistanis.

Just because there are "only" 500 fighters from the UK (!!) actually fighting in Syria and Iraq doesn't mean they are a tiny minority as my statistic reflects upon the validation of the majority of muslims living in the mentioned countries of what these fighters are doing in Syria and the Levant.

Because it's not about the actual numbers of fighters fighting jihad overseas. It's about the approval rating these fighters get from their religious brethren and sisters back home. As I said, even if the approval rating of the fighters was 100%, that is irrelevant to my original comment in which I stated the actual fighters themselves are a tiny minority. How do you not see that? 500/ 3 million. It could not be more simple.

I know that the French regarded the UK and particularly London as an Achilles heel in the fight against extremism and pleaded over many years with the British government to wake up to the threat on its doorstep. Eventually they did (after the London bombings) but by then it had taken root. As for what the French have done domestically, I can't claim to have any great knowledge about that but, considering they have by far the largest Muslim population in Europe (if we exclude Russia) of whom many are socially and economically marginalised, then it would appear they are doing a successful job of combating domestic Islamism.
You are right about the backgrounds to many of the original immigrants in the UK - many from backward villages rather than the more developed urban areas, although since we are now into the second and third generation, that should no longer be such a factor. In fact it is the radicalized members of the younger generation who present the risk rather than the conservative but essentially peaceful older generation. I can't pretend I know a ready solution which is compatible with traditional freedoms in the UK....

I fully agree about faith schools. It just leads to separate communities living in parallel but with no real understanding of each other. I have always liked our laissez-faire attitude as opposed to the overt patriotism that Americans seem to go in for but, while I'd still leave out the Union Jack and God Save the Queen, it's probably time to start introducing some kind of instruction at school in basic values - tolerance, equality, freedom of speech etc.

However, concerns increased as IS started waging battles against government forces in Raqqa province and in the eastern countryside of Homs, while different brigades, including Jabhat al-Nusra, have been advancing in the Hama countryside, closing in on Al-Ghab plain, which is seen as the eastern gate to the Alawite areas in the mountains of the Syrian coast.

Heavy fighting near the Israeli border too. Incidently, we hear that Hizballah forces may be called back to Lebanon. Surprising considering the above stories from Homs, but on the other hand this shit has been spilling into Lebanon for quite a while.
The head of the MET today said they only had the funding to monitor "a handful" of suspected returning potential terrorists. Reports that 200 or so have already returned to the UK with a senior US security source suggesting they have been sent back to their respective countries to create new cells. It doesn't feel like enough is being done to counter this threat.

Faith schools should be abolished, Islamic, Christian and Jewish alike.
Having these schools in the first place is incredibly discriminatory in its idea.
A closer attempt to equality is solely possible by abolishing all these faith schools and have everyone attend school. School based upon a curriculum which teaches universal human rights (not human rights according to Sharia Law or the Bible or Torah) and which gives classes into each faith out there, but also classes into concepts such as Humanism.
Sadly, another Lee Rigby is just a matter of time.
Until the moment the authorities are finally willing to admit to clearly stating what motivates these muslims (such as the ones who killed Lee Rigby - who were by their own admission clearly motivated by their Islamic faith (like all the IS fighters too) and carried out their murderous attack in the name of allah) and act upon the assessment with relentless effort to eradicate this issue, we will sadly see more incompetence from police and authorities, lives lost and our way of life flushed down the toilet.
