Alex Salmond and Independence

perhaps somebody should pledge a referendum on this if they win the next general election - would probably get my vote.

Unless we get a yes today (crosses fingers)
That mischievous part of me secretly wouldn't mind a Yes win just so that Salmond's lies and machinations can be exposed in their full glory. Imagine the uproar when there's no currency union or EU membership!!

In that article about the Shetlands and Orknay Islands potentially wanting to separate, I found this little gem:

"A petition of more than 1,000 signatures raised by islanders from Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles calling for a separate referendum on whether they could themselves become independent was rejected last month by the Scottish government, which said it had promised new powers to the three island groups."

I'm actually surprised this hasn't gotten more attention, seems so ridiculously hypocritical from the SNP.

That's the article, was linked earlier.

Wouldn't a lot of "Scotlands" oil belong to these independent islands?

Or, "Norwegians with no link or knowledge of the topic at hand make vacuous statements to appear intelligent and informed. They fail".

On a separate note, I just found out that when Scotland goes independent, the UK won't change its flag? What the hell? Why would we keep a fecking big Scottish saltire on the flag when they're not part of the country anymore? That's ludicrous.

Well the other options aren't pretty.

Potentially up to 75% of "Scottish" oil reserves I believe.

I think that's a hotly contested figure. I've seen claims as low as 25% and as high as just over 50% (I haven't seen the 75% figure).

One thing for certain, it's yet another factor that shows the Yes campaign doesn't have concrete answers for very important questions in regards to how the new Scotland would be set up.

Oil has bee so central and they can't tell the voters with certainty how much there is and now they can't even say with certainty how much they would actually own.

No intimidation here then, eh?

You claim to enjoy debate but give silly one word answers to selected questions asked of you with no details to back it up.

You'll need all the money you can get your hands on when the cuts come in and taxes rise to fund the gaps in your spending commitments. Like the £450m cuts to the NHS Salmond make so much noise about protecting.

There were articles in the papers recently of NHS debts growing in England and Wales, all parts of tne nations health service are facing problems, not just Scotland

It'll be OK™

But wait, that sounds exactly like what I'm doi- oh, you!

:) Whilst it's quite right that the rest of the UK can't vote today, I don't think it's fair to get sarcastic because they're passionate about the issue. It's an emotive topic that affects everyone in the UK, even if they're not Scottish and can't vote.

Meanwhile, the latest opinion polls show the Yes vote hugely up, around the 60% mark. And that's despite the fact that most of the No votes will come in the morning, as the older generations vote early (and they'll make up the majority of No votes), so you'd expect No to be up at the moment, only for the gap to close later on in the day when the younger generations vote! For Yes to already be up by so much suggests a landslide might be on the cards...

Looking good for Scottish independence. The "Better Together" campaign really shot itself in the foot over the last few weeks, trying to scare the Scots into submission. They're the wrong people to do that to!

What's this?

With the amount of threats going about I wouldn't imagine to many are being truthful.

I have a horrible feeling that it's going to be a Yes vote. :(

If it is then it is. Not many outside Scotland will lose much sleep over it.

Im hoping for one at this point to be honest, I'm fed up with all the bullshit surrounding both sides and the way I see it if there is a no vote then the issue is just going to linger. The fact that Scotland as a country is so divided to the point of violence is saddening to me (not that this is all that new an idea) but the idea of Scotland dividing itself from the UK is something I'm fine with.

For the record, I think its a bad idea economically (for everyone) and could be even worse depending on the decisions that are made post referendum but should Scotland vote yes then my only interest lies with the rest of us getting as much as we can out of it and giving Scotland as little as we can get away with.

This thread really should be renamed to "Snarky Brits Tell Scots Why They Vote For Independence And Why They Are Stupid Because Of It."

I know it's seems funny but they are really are just a bunch of nasty little men. I love England and hope the best for it and all of Britain after we vote, no matter who eggs on divisions or wishes misfortune on Scotland for voting for autonomy.

I haven't believed this whole campaign that it could happen but there were thousands in the square and around in Glasgow yesterday and it felt like something had shifted in the cities mood. If we have an exceptional turn out and it's a close run thing then we could swing it. We are 10% of the country.

Never said there weren't issues in the rUK. Trouble is Salmond has hardly been honest with voters when he promises to keep spending but it takes a leaked document to highlight there are £450m of cuts planned.

It's really, genuinely, not at all.

Yep, and for those saying that's not fair, I couldn't give a feck.

It isn't though is it.

You don't think that reading news mostly coming from pro-union sources (all London based media) may have coloured your view slightly? Because that is not what Scotland looks like today.
