Leicester City 5:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 21 September 2014

Shouldn't have crumbled after that horror decision. When we scored the 2nd and the 3rd we needed to be smart and should've just kept the ball better and been smart about it. What's done is done, need to find a way to get out of this.

This is what's frustrating, when we went 2-0 up you didn't see Leicester panic, they controlled themselves and got a quick goal back. When they went 3-1 down, again they didn't panic. Yes they got a dodgy penalty, but our attitude after that was very worrying, not just from the defence but from every single player in the team. It's like someone hit the big red panic button.
I think the thing holding us back more then anything is our mentality. With Fergie we had a winning mentality and we could grind out results or come back, but Moyes destroyed that and there is always that doubt in their minds now, its like the players think they won't hold on anymore. We need to go on a winning run to get the self confidence back.

Could be, but in truth the majority of the team out there didn't play under Moyes.

It's impossible to play against a team that's allowed to do whatever the hell they want to you and go unpunished. Players realize when that's the case and use it to their advantage. Then they got a rubbish penalty which caused the team's already somewhat tenuous concentration to lapse, leading to a subsequent goal, and then the whole thing collapsed. A lot of our players had a bad day, but we would have won handily if that incompetent homer of a ref had correctly sent off De Laet and we'd been up 3-1 against ten men. Instead Leicester were allowed to continue to be thuggish and break the rules every 30 seconds in order to completely disrupt the game for us which, combined with a few bad performances and a still ungelled team, gave us a loss instead of what would, with correct refereeing, have been a comfortable win.

That thread title, if this was any other forum, this place would be laughing at them, in fact if this was under Fergie, the objectivity police would saying everyone should stop making excuses and bla bla bla. Now it's suddenly okay.

I've been in denial about our defensive frailities, not anymore. Today was the first time I missed Vidic and realised the gap he in particular left.

Vardy was outstanding (if very annoying). Proper defence should/would cope a lot better.

Funny, all I saw was a mediocre championship type player who cheated & managed to con the referee. I saw he got man of the match - he went down like a sack of cheating shit & the ref couldn't wait to take centre stage & gift him a penalty - if thats the kind of play that supporters wish to applaud then ok, but it merely encourages the despicable behaviour of the Youngs & Maradonas & IMO that type of football belongs in the gutter. I dont mind aggressive play & Blackett deserved his card but TBH I thought the team were fantastic for much of today until the cheating started but I accept we need a right back & centre halves who can play more than 2 games without injury

I don't agree. I think the thing that's holding us back is that the players have not yet learned to play together as a team. They're mostly brand new, playing under a new manager who's getting to grips with the English game. Add a bunch of injuries to key players into the mix, and today is what you get.

"Leicester + Clattenburg vs United"
That's rubbish. Clattenburg was clearly a United player in disguise. Stunk up the place and caved to pressure as the momentum went against us. He and the other players need to take a good look at themselves for the throwing away a 2goal lead.

Balls, he was great today.

Blaming Clattenburg is stupid. Bad decision happen in football, deal with it. We just collapsed.

Our defensive frailties have been obvious for ages and they were exposed again today.

It's the same way in the papers and on the talk radio. The discussion of a title challenge after our sole victory of the season was obviously foolish and Liverpoolesque, just like an overreaction to today's result would be foolish.

We had many positives today and many adjustments to new players are still needed. I enjoyed most of the match and the game was entertaining, even if it was perversely painful for the last 30 minutes. Injuries and defensive cover remain persistent problems. I am disappointed we were not able to make the needed adjustments to tighten up the game.

They just feed off the fans and vice versa...

I would assume, if it was 3-1, we would have brought on Fletcher for a striker to tighten the midfield and keep passing it around. There is no excuse for the team crumbling, but I wouldn't take that as the nature of this team.

I would agree with that in the Moyes era, but too soon to say that now. I actually feel we played resonably well most of the game, as well as against QPR when people raved about us. As they say though goals change games, the first goal, at the time it looekd to me like the ball went out and am yet to see a conclusive video shot but it still looked that way to me. At 3-1 I thought we may go on to dominate the match then was THAT penalty.....atrocious decision, was a foul from Varney and a dive with the admittedly foolish retribution from Rafael.
It is too early to judge our defence as for me our best back four are yet to play: Rafael, Jones, Rojo and Shaw, What the match did highlight though is a real lack of genuine consistant quality in our back four. Rafael is a talented full back but only one season (Fergies last) has he eradicated over exuberance and naivety, Evans yet again gets injured and even before doing so looked nothin gmore than he ever has to me...a fourth choice centre back. i have now made my mind up personally on Smalling...a great athlete and strong but he just doesnt have the intelligence, concentration or discipline at the moment to be a top class centre back, and i never think he will have. Blackett I actually thought did well, his best game for us....but he is young and you gnplayers make mistakes, as he did for one of the goals. We basically for me have too many injury prone, inconsistant defenders and none of them are top quality. Can we finish in the top four, possibly. People talkign about us winning the league the last few days.....not a chance withour defence. We are like Keegans Newcastle, be exciting and frustrating to watch, we CAN make the top four though, and that would be enough for me this eyar if it happens

Yeah I can't abide that 'Vardy was great' nonsense. He was ultra aggressive (and allowed to be) and he blatantly dived. It's a shame for the game that that is what is celebrated.

True but it's a collective mentality in the club that we have to restore, and that takes time. Changing the squad helps but it doesn't change everything.

This too. We were fine for an hour but collapsed afterwards and that's when we saw how we aren't defending as a team at all. You can't put all the blame on the defence alone, it was defending as a team and we just weren't organized.

Three bad decisions by Clattenburg which all led to goals, don't care if you're United, Chelsea or Barca - it was the main influence of the match
Defensively all over the place after the first penalty, but we were cruising until that point.
Certainly one of the worst refereeing performances I have ever seen

LVG said the exact same thing in his post match comments. Yeah our defenders did not play well, but as team we are too poor as a unit.

The press love British thugs in the game.

and you just know he'll fade back into mediocre obscurity after the next match.

Referee stole momentum from us.what else,
Rojo was out of position,
I think LVG got wrong with the substution this time.

No doubt it was a terrible decision from Clattenburg at a time when the game was won. I am a bit frustrated with Rafael though that he even gave him the chance to make it. But in this instance, I can see why he was annoyed. What followed the penalty was awful.

The attacking side of things looks fine. We look dynamic and a threat. I think the midfield and attack is pretty much fixed for the rest of the season bar injury, even after the return of Carrick. The six who played today, will be the chosen six for me.

I suppose Rojo will move inside next week to partner Smalling with Evans probably out and Blackett suspended. Shaw comes in for a debut at left back. It has to be said though, what I've seen so far from Evans and Smalling (I've left Blackett out of the equation as a youngster) does not fill me with any confidence they can step up from squad player to leader of the defence.

Its funny how in most of the post match reports that the decision only gets a tiny mention, and if it had gone the other way, it would have been the headine..

Because our collapse after the decision is the real story. We can blame the ref all we like but we weren't good enough defensively and that's the bigger story in terms of our season.

Jamie Vardy - Sky Sports' MOTM.

I'm looking forward to the next time a foreign player dives, to get a penalty and/or player sent off, and Sky Sports flip their shit at how they're ruining the game with a completely straight face.

Just compare the headlines...

I looked at the Sky report and the "Moment of the Match" is apparently when Leicester scored their fifth. And the penalty is "contentious"..

I was sort of hoping that after the QPR game, teams would be concerned about our attacking threat. LCFC didn't seem to be bothered about the attacking threat as they were confident of exploiting our weakness at the back. If Rojo had done his job, they would not have got the first, though it did look as though the ball had gone out before it was crossed. That just gave them more belief they could always come back if we got a goal. We needed to keep the clean sheet. How the team fell apart after the second was worrying.

Now West Ham are just going to go for it, probably try and kick Di Maria off the park and attack our backs. We need to win convincingly preferably with a clean sheet.

The worst thing about this result is that most of the other clubs around the top 4 have dropped points this weekend. We missed a trick and we definately had the beating of Leicester. Should have finished the game off in the first half.

You can look at it in another way, we haven't lost much ground on most of our direct rivals

Thankfully I missed the entire second half, because it sounded like a classic shit show from Clattenburg and the team.

At least the attack is looking better.

Not too worried. It's incredibly difficult to beat a team when the ref helps give them so much momentum on top of a shaky defense. You're destined to lose every time.

Should bounce back against West Ham.

It was the ref's fault and let us leave it at that. The players were shocked at that decision, which caused them to come off their game. Our foreign players are not used to the shit refs we have in this country. That's the way the cookie crumbles. We can't forget Clattenburg's 'performance', because it will happen again and again.
