Champions League 14/15 group stage matchday 2 (09/30 + 10/01)

I prefer the old Bayern, this one is so boring.

I dunno why people act like every game of the "old" Bayern were thrillers?

This game has been enjoyable enough for what it is, a European giant away against a smaller side playing in a dead stadium.

If I'm not mistaken Mourinho said Costa will play against you lot and Arsenal, so he might be starting.

Naby Sarr against Costa  Things are going to get messy

How boring do you think a match can be if the opponent sits back but you still have to be careful because of counter attacks?

Yeah, Barcelona were criticised the same way. Apparently it's their fault that teams go ultra defensively and play for a point...

I assume Cavani will be playing as a striker today seeing as Ibra is injured. He's looked pretty meh every time I've seen him play but everyone seemed convinced over the summer that Wenger should have bought him so will be interesting to see how he gets on vs Barca.

Maybe he can do this again. I don't expect much from PSG tonight as they have been pretty poor in attack this season. Cavani will most likely be isolated again.

What a great hold- and link-up play by Lewandowski, that was really hard to pull off.

He was pretty fantastic at Napoli but hasn't reached those heights at PSG imo, although playing on the wing probably has something to do with that. Still, don't think he's worth the £50-60m it'd cost to buy him.

Difficult to say. I think he looked very good in an attacking box to box role and surprisingly great in that left sided centerback role in our back three. The few times he actually played as a CM, he struggled a bit. He benefits from Alonso keeping the game ticking in midfield now, so that he can be more direct.

He played so many different roles in the 8 games he started so far this season, that the most impressing thing clearly is how easily he adapts and how brilliant his tactical understanding is. Truely impressive from a 22 year old.

you must watch another match.

@saivet
Alaba´s role is often unique. I have never seen this mix of centerhalf and b2b midfielder. He is not a natural holding player, so playing him as dm/cm doesnt suit him, he looks very good as offensive midfielder. He is well rounded but his biggest strength is his pace and athleticism. He must be able to burst forward to show his best. Thats why he is such a good fullback, but accelerates in many different roles.

Cheers. Interesting views. I've not watched much of him in CM, but I do really like him as a player, hope he keeps progressing whichever position he plays.

He was one of my favourite players at Napoli, I rate him highly but he does have a clumsy side to him which seems to be more apparent the past season or so.

Mourinho said Costa will start.

feck, we need him fit for Sunday, I thought he could only play one game a week :nervous:. Maybe hes hoping we have it won by half time. Doubt it.

No Piqué again for Barcelona. ter Stegen back in too.

Benatia has been garbage.

Benatia not really is fit by now. But Boateng is a little injured.

A win is a win... They did not play risky anymore because of the defensive problems. With Boateng it just looks better as he has the pace Dante does not have (Benatia is supposed to have that, too, but like I said he still lacks fitness and maybe even experience on that level)

bayern a bit unmotivated and half arsed after the goal and Moscow played way to defensive. Benatia had a mare, but got away with it. THree points are all that matters.
Now I hope that Roma beats City

Against a 5-4-1 the "old Bayern" wouldn't have looked any better.

Sometimes I wonder whether it's time for a general rule change. This 90 minutes defending mania, even when a goal down at home, is just dull. I don't know the perfect rule change, but maybe they could increase the size of the goals, e.g. each side by 2 feet. The attacking teams would benefit and maybe the ever defenders couldn't play like that anymore. I'm bored to death by these matches, and according to my feeling it's getting worse each year.

Scholes tearing City/the crowd to pieces saying it doesn't have a Champions League feel to it tonight, whereas at Anfield and Old Trafford you know when it's a European night.

But it is not Bayern who is to blame for that. They were up one goal away in a very "odd" match with a difficult atmosphere. They knew that they should not risk to much counter attacks. Yes, it for sure was boring...

The match day thread after our loss against Bate was actually quite memorable, I'm surprised that so many have already forgotten about it. I take a boring 1-0 away win somewhere in Eastern Europe, it's a great result.

Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry (c), Filipe Luis; Matic, Fabregas; Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard; Diego Costa
Cech, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Mikel, Salah, Willian, Remy

Interesting that Luis plays ahead of Azpilicueta.

So he didn't see Liverpool at home two weeks ago? Their first CL game in years and all the atmosphere of a training game.

Agreed. Had Bayern scored a second Moscow probably would have switched to an 8-1-1 in order to "secure" the score ...

Got the following teams not to lose tonight in an acca.

Ajax
City
Chelsea
Schalke
PSG

Which one will let me down? ;)

The ref just winked to the camera as they were doing the team linup/champs league anthem. I ctually had to rewind to double check. That can't be a good sign!

Yes and no. Quite clearly the possession and pressing tactics lead to extreme possession stats and one sided matches. If you sit deep after taking the lead and defend in and around your own box and look to score a 2nd goal on the counter, there's a chance that the underdog starts to attack. If you suffocate the opponent from the first to the last minute, there's not a lot he can do. Play with more attacking players and you see even less of the ball, so a more attacking line-up doesn't really help either. Guardiola's idea of football is very extreme and definitely is partly at fault for how these games play out.

Not that I care, the first 25 minutes were brilliant football in my opinion and it's fully understandable that the team played with less intensity and less concentration after that brilliant start. I also hope that FIFA finds a better solution to punish clubs for racism. It was fecking boring, they should have given the tickets to school classes for free and filled the stadium with children or something like that, way better than the empty stadium.

Also backed City/roma not to have a goal in the first 5 minutes.

Costa misses a 1 on 1.

Great save from Patricio

PSG no doubt. Think Barca will do them, the French haven't been convincing at all since the start of the season.
