looks good but van Gaal said on couple of occasions that he likes rooney as 10. But Id think Herrera being no10 would be also a masterstroke as he would constantly put pressure up front. But dimaria may be another great option as no10.. but we could see as well herrera as b2b rooney as 10 and dimaria drifting wide up front playing robben role... we could also change to 4-3-3 once we get our quality wingers. I am sure we will go for either Depay or Reus if not both in the next couple of windows..In the current formation i think this is the way to go. Herrera has proven to be good in the No10 role. Strootman wold be better suited playing box to box and keep Blind in the team as the deep lying mid. I'm not convinced Mata will stay past the summer so he wouldn't be being left out. Defence needs work obviously but this is just going off the current squad.
Given how Blind is very left footed I wonder if LvG will really want a left footed partner for him, given his love of balance.
Think he might use him to the left of herrera, with blind or Carrick behind them. Di Maria pushes up to the wing or to a free role at the tip of the diamond.
I wouldn't be surprised if LVG played Strootman and Herrera as a CM pairing (works for Chelsea Matic-Fabregas) and will use Blind (DM) as an alternative to a #10.
Sounds like you guys are suggesting a 4-3-3? The problem with that is LvG has 3 strikers to fit in and wont play any of them wide as he knows that's shoehorning. 4-2-3-1 allows us to play 1 striker and Rooney as an AM/#10, which is the formation I think we'll use once LvG can get a couple of more players in.
Can still be a 4-4-2 diamond, but more like this:

Not a proper #10 in Di Maria, he's more just given a free role to drift to either wing or go deeper. Defensively he can press the defenders too, and then going forward he can pick the ball up deep and still have his space to run.Di Maria

Yes that's what i mean. When we talk 4-3-3 in the 'LVG' way, It depends on which way the midfield triangle is pointing. If its towards the GK 4-5-1/4-3-3 (CDM - Carrick/Blind). If its towards to ST 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 (#10 - Rooney/Mata). Both formation require 2 CM and 1 of the other.
I also agree with you that once LVG brings new players in (Januzaj is not good enough as a winger - #10) he will play the 4-2-3-1 variant of 4-3-3 formation he talks about. This formation will allow us to play Rooney and either RVP or Falcao. I'd be happy with that because we still would have a top class striker to bring on.

Not sure about Di Maria in a free role but I guess it could work, I think Falcao is best without a partner though. I am not saying the line-up you posted can't work, it just seems like we'd be reshuffling again next summer to accommodate Strootman.
Ah right, I'm with you now then, but I wonder if LvG would want to play Herrera so deep or play without a true #6. As for the winger spot, personally I still think Januzaj will be a top player for us but we should bring one in to act as competition with him and Di Maria as I don't think Young and Valencia provide that.
You have a valid point on Herrera, he would be playing as a #8 and Strootman as a #6 but I understand what you mean. Its something that LVG can have him work on. He did play in a midfield pair in the 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation. He has some experience in that role, he just needs to build on it.
I'm having doubts on Mata at the moment, he is a WC player but for some reason I'm not quite sure on him and that's where Januzaj comes in because i think Januzaj is a little restricted when he's stuck out wide because he doesn't have the pace to beat his man though he can with skill. I feel he's better closer to goal and as a #10 he would be more effective. He's still young and has a lot of work to put in.
As competition for Di Maria there is none and your right we do need another winger as Young, Valencia, Nani, Zaha and Lingard are not of the quality we need. We should bring in a top winger and a young winger like Depay and let them compete for a starting spot.

I think Herrera could adapt to playing deeper, I believe he has done it at Bilbao and played fairly deep for the Spain U21 team that won the Euros, but he's so good in attack that it seems a waste not to have him involved further up the field. I get you on Januzaj now, playing as the #10 back-up might be his best route as like you I think Mata has faded badly in his all round game. Not sure we'd bring two wingers in as I can see Valencia being keot for another season and Herrera can play RM very well. I would love to see us buy Reus or Memphis though.
Hes nowhere close to bring serie as best player... But hopefully he comes back in top form. Would be a great signing for us.
He is/was near, Pogba isnt better than him, the ones who are ; Tevez/Vidal/Honda and all the other ones are debatable.
Well for starters, Pjanic is Roma's best player and most important midfielder, while they also have De Rossi who is key to them and probably was better last season. Then Juventus have Vidal who is clearly better, and pogba who probably is at this point too. That's only looking at midfielders for those top 2 teams. Strootman is class, but in no way is he the best midfielder at his club let alone the best player in the league.
And no, its not just Bosnian bias with regards to Pjanic, most people who watch Roma consistently would tell you the same.

Normally I'd also add Chiellini but he clearly just isnt the same, same for Barzagli.
I'm not saying there's a lot between pogba and him, but pogba has upped his game since the turn of the year (or just developed further) while strootman was out for most of the time. Before then there wasn't one who was a whole lot better then the other, both were more playing second fiddle to Vidal and Pjanic at their own clubs. Being out for half 6-9 months takes its toll though so you have to also take it into account.
That one goes to the debatable ones imo, imo Pogba is also overrated, havent seen him control games like Strootman and his defensive duties/work rate are far in the minor. Attacking wise he even had relative better stats than Pogba, but other than these players, who are significantly better than Strootman?
Well that's all that is needed, no? Tevez, Vidal, Pjanic and maybe pogba. All were arguably better before his injury, so there's no way he can be seen as a better player right now after hes been injured for so long.

I thought we should have signed Strootman before he joined Roma but he isn’t in the same class as Pogba or Vidal, I know LVG likes him but I think people are getting a bit carried away with assuming we will sign him and exaggerating how good a player he actually is. He would cost a lot of money, has to recover from a serious injury and is another CM who lacks a yard of pace (it’s not the end of the world but we already have Blind and Fellaini who are very slow) so I think he is now a player we should steer clear of.
Marchisio, please tell me some things Marchisio has that Strootman hasnt, Strootman is betting going forward (goals, assists, creating chances, key passes, pass completion), is better tactically, better in interceptions/duels and is more dynamic.
One thing to remember like any players in LvG's Dutch set up, he had a restricted pool of options, he doesn't at United in terms of who he adds to our team.
Consistency, a greater engine. I just think Marchisio has been doing it longer and he is an incredibly reliable player with a great attitude.

Anyway, Strootman will have a job getting back into the team when he's back unless someone from Roma's midfield has a drastic drop in form.
in regards to Roma's midfield, Naingollan has played very well for them.
Yeah he's been quality, probably the closest thing to Vidal in that league.

I know people were on about a January bid but in around 6 weeks won't Italy be on a winter break so if he is not in training yet will he even play before the Jan window shuts?

Also the comment about "control" of midfield, its very much a team effort at Roma with Pjanic and De Rossi being just as influencial. And honestly they look about as good in midfield with Nainggolan in Strootman's place, he's statistically been their best CM this season.
