Manchester City as a 'world power'

A thread perhaps targeted towards foreign fans, or well traveled fans.

I'm just wondering how large is their status now? When I think of huge clubs I think United, Milan, Juventus, Madrid, Bayern, Barcelona, Liverpool even.

I feel now, after 12 years of Roman's money Chelsea is named with the elite. What about City? Yes their squad at the moment is up there with the best, no doubt about it. But are they considered an elite, prestigious club? Or are they thought of how I think of PSG, which is a new money club with no history.

Nowhere near as popular as the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool just yet.

Yep, barely any fans over here.

Chelsea gained a fanbase fairly quickly over here after their first two Premier League titles but the same can't be said for City.

The Shitty fans here are in their 40's + 50's. Not met any younger.
 
Starting to get a trickle of followers in the US. Some like my brother just starting to follow the game so he decided to pick a recent title winner plus he gets to thumb his nose at me and my nephews. Getting lots of extra coverage on the Yankees network so they will pull some fans in.

Yeah they do have a bit of a following. And usually they are of the older generation

Seeing as you do see city tops in sports shops I'm guessing they have a younger following, but not huge
 
Most people around me hate United, but also couldn't care less about Manchester City.
 
A lot of my Malaysian friends at Uni seem to support them. When I say a lot, I mean 3 out of 4.
 
They heard of them in Poland once when they did 'The Poznań' thing but nobody gave a crap after. United and maybe Liverpool ruling there and the only blue color you can see is from sporadic Chelski fans but that's really rare sight.

In Netherlands ? Only remember 2012 Champions League, 3:1 Ajax win, De Jong with a goal against City and Daley Blind another promising performance.
 
Been in the states 20 yrs now. I've only seen people wearing city gear in the last 3 yrs and it's all younger new fans of sawker
 
In NZ, I have seen a few people wearing city shirts around. Probably similar in number to the usual suspects of United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. Amongst people I know who have a real interest in football, they seem mostly to be United or Liverpool.
One of the main guys who does sport on the TV3 National news claims to be a West Ham fan.
 
Haven't ever met in real life a City supporter. Neither someone wearing their shirt. True story!
 
I know 2 city fans where I am from. It's really not that popular. Liverpool United Chelsea arsenal are who are supported. I have been to Panama many times though and strangely enough they seen to have a decent following that side of the world.
 
I'd say they're even behind Spurs and Everton here in the States, much less the "big four."
 
Don't think player's really care about the prestige of a club nowadays, once they're paid well and competing for trophies.

But in terms of fanbase, they're non existent here in Ireland.
 
The most popular english clubs in Portugal are United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. But they have began showing more City games since their takeover
 
Here it's predominately United and Liverpool. Lots of Arsenal fans as well. We're mad about the PL and it's been around for a while so every team has its supporters. Personally I know of 3 City fans. That's counting the well known ones. All of them are close to 40 or older so they've been following them since way back. Chelsea is similar but a lot more newer and younger fans follow them, especially because of Eiður. I'd say Real and Barca are still more popular than any other team bar United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
 
In Atlanta I see mostly United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea when it comes to EPL. I did see a few city fans at an Irish pub the day they beat us 1-0. Its the same in New York and L.A. Their presence here is still minimal but I think things will change once they win a few more titles (hopefully not) and do better in the CL. The funny thing is most people i've talked to that are going to throw their support to City's MLS franchise team, New York City F.C, are not City fans and don't particularly plan on supporting them.

Where's 'here'?
 
I live in the US and frequent the pubs that show matches, and the local fields where we play. In the last 6 years, I have seen a total of 1 (ONE) Manchester City shirt on a human being. It was at a swimming pool. I went up and introduced myself, thinking he must be from Manchester. It turns out he had no idea what the shirt was about but his girlfriend liked the color and bought it for him. So I took that opportunity to tell him what the three stars on the crest represent, in case anyone asked.
 
They are a pure manufactured team by a bunch of scum bags with money. There is no romance or history with them like a United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea. These are clubs who have played in Europe for years, have large fan bases internationally with or without winning trophies. Man City's charm is "they were shite, now they arent and Mike Summerbee is a twat". Its hard to market that.
 
I see a City shirt here and there in Colorado and Georgia. Very rare. If they continue to remain top four with the occasional league title, perhaps a strong CL run, and tour the US, they'll eventually reach the Chelsea level of fandom over here. But that would still see them lag far behind the usual suspects from over there.
 
City played Liverpool at Yankee Stadium last summer and my brother went to the match - he said it was like 90-95% Liverpool fans. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen people wearing City gear in the US, and that's including a father and son full-kit wanker pair at the airport. They do get used pretty frequently on FIFA though, so I guess that's a start.
 
We only won our first Premier League title in 2012 and have yet to even make it to the QF of the CL. It will take a few more years before we start to amass a respectable global fanbase.

A few years from now all of your best players will be old. Replacing the likes of Yaya, Silva, Zabaleta etc are going to be so important to City's growth and continued success.

Whereas almost all of Arsenal, Chelsea, and our star players are very young and many not even at their peaks, yours are at or around 30 already.
 
City have a good history, annoys me how some fans stand on a pedestal, look down at other clubs and say 'they have no history' just because it isn't at good as United's.

It's like Real Madrid with their 10 European cups looking at United and saying we have no history.

BUT if you think City have no history, even recent success is history, their 2 Premier Leagues and Fa Cup and Carling cup are history, top players like Aguero playing for them will be in their history, Sheikh Mansour making them the richest club in the world will be in their history, even if he sells up tomorrow.

Italians only know them because they had Balotelli for a while, but, apart from that, nobody really cares about them.
 
Well, I'm foreign so I suppose I can chime in. I met a City fan once. I remember it like yesterday, even though it was back in '97. It was at Arndale.
 
Man City is no doubt thought of around the world as an emerging power, but nowhere close to the truly "big" clubs of Bayern, Real, Barca, United and Juventus yet.

Liverpool is probably thought of as a fading power, like Ajax, but not far off being thought of a former glory, like Nottingham Forest. There's virtually no plausible scenario that has Liverpool competing for a CL trophy over the next decade, whereas it is easy to see City getting there soon.
 
Know one City fan personally, and know of a couple more. All in their early 20s. The guy I know is a complete glory hunter though, previously followed Chelsea and Celtic before that. Tbf since he started following City he's gotten way more into football.

Definitely wouldn't consider them a world power. Wouldn't even say Chelsea are quite a world power either, at least not in that very elite.
 
I dont know any City fans here personally. They exist but I think they're few in numbers. I guess they're a bit bigger in Bosnia and Serbia cause of Džeko and Kolarov.

Its all United, Liverpool and Chelsea here. United and Chelsea fan groups are pretty big, dont know about Liverpool one, it does exist but dont know how big they are.

Funny thing is they always were all about being a Manchester club and about glory hunters supporting us. But now they want to be just like us with a world fan base and all. Pretty ironic if you ask me.

They do have history, every club has history, its just their history till the Sheiks wasnt particulary big.
