A nice compromise would be either De Gea resigns but gets a buyout of like 30 million that Madrid can activate starting next year.

If this were North American sports, we'd be talking about a deal of De Gea + Chicharito + Rafael for Carvajal + Jack Harper since Rafael is on the outs and could back up Danilo there, they like Cheech and Harper is British.

Yep. Madrid might sign someone like Cech or Lloris and have them perform so well they don't want a change, or we might fluke a CL with good tactics a la Liverpool, or just win the league and it convinces De Gea to stay.
Can't see that happening and I dont believe the above to be either party's motivation for the move.

From Madrid's point of view - Madrid want De Gea because he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he's Spanish. If not this season then they will wait til next year. Casillas will do a job for one more season so can't see them paying for Cech or Lloris in the mean time.

From DDG's point of view - he knows United are an ambitious club, he knows greater success will eventually come and he could realistically hope (if not expect) to win a CL medal in the next 10 years given the money being pumped in. Given eh's seen out the past 2 years of mediocrity its clear that he knows we are heading in the right direction. If he moves to Madrid its because of national and local pride. To be a keeper for the most successful club in the world in his home town is the lure. Its not money motivated, he wont go to PSG if Madrid falls through.

I am glad he seems to be in 2 minds and has remained tight lipped on it all but I really think he will go.

Me too, but if we don't get a big enough offer from Madrid we should just enjoy one last season of De Gea.

We just spent 20 million on one year of Falcao, right? How is 20-25 on a 25 year old De Gea a bad idea? We have money and squad members we are likely going to sell.

And I don't think it's insane to think Madrid will be so desperate to upgrade from Casillas that they may find someone this summer and then that they don't want to replace next summer.

That's an awful deal.

I think that from a financial point of view we could afford to see out the final season and lose him for free I would just question whether its the best route. Cech is available and is probably as good a replacement out there.

In terms of Madrid buying another keeper, just dont see it happening, Casillas is far from his peak but still better than most keepers. And even if they do sign someone else, they'd still most likely take DDG on a free; DDG and Neuer are on another level you just would make it work if he wanted to join for free.

No, probably not. Although you don't know that he doesn't :D. Just seems like it would be unnecessary if he doesn't care though. What is the point?

A good point

Well you need to have a positive media profile don't you.

I wish I could agree but I think Madrid puts quite a bit of pride in having Spain's numero uno in goal. Even if they find a decent replacement, they will come for De Gea next summer unless he suddenly declines.

That's an awful deal.

It's pretty rare for anyone to get equal value for a star that wants to leave. I was just saying what this whole situation would look like in other sports.

Musing aside, if there were swaps in real life and not just the papers then De Gea + Rafael for Carvajal makes a lot of sense. We get maybe the best possible RB signing in the entire world and they get De Gea and give Danilo the RB job but also get a talented (if oft-injured) backup who needs a new manager to replace him.

I'd be shocked if we get Carvajal, though. I assume he'll stay and fight for his job and they have no idea how Danilo will do anyways, so won't be eager to sell their young, Spanish starter. And if they do sell him, there have been Bayern rumours and he could just take Rafinha's job and play for Pep, so he'd probably do that.

I think it's the following, in terms of likelihood:

1 - De Gea signs for Madrid for about 20-25 million

2 - De Gea stays for a year and leaves on a Bosman
3 - De Gea decides to resign for us, surprisingly.
4 - We're closer to signing Bale than we think and we do a De Gea + 50 for Bale type deal.

5 - De Gea goes and we get someone else in return as full or part value. Illaramendi makes a fair amount of sense but he's been so unimpressive at Madrid that nobody is talking about it. Coentrao is rumored, and while that would be a poor use of resources, so was signing Falcao on loan when we had Rooney, Van Persie and Chicharito as 9s.

I want whatever Real is smoking if they legitimately think that getting De Gea for less than 30m euros is fair or reasonable. We should be getting at least 40m euros for him plus a player in return.

It amazes me how undervalued keepers are in the modern game, especially one who is top 5 in the world, is 23 years old, and just had the best season of his career.

Isco is the player that I would love most, if we getting a player in return. But I doubt they'd be foolish enough to let him go.

I would laugh so hard if he did, and then came out saying how he would never play for Real as a boyhood Atletico lad.

Stranger things have happened.

Real must think they hold all the cards though and that United will accept a fee, even a low one, rather than lose out entirely if he goes on a Bosman next year. They might be right too but, as I've said umpteen times, until the player actually states his intention, Real might just be pissing in the wind.

When asked by MUTV presenter Mandy Henry if he has a message for United fans ahead of next season, the manager responded: "I can only promise that I will do my utmost best, that we shall fight to the end - more we cannot do - and that we will make the right decisions when we purchase players. And when players are leaving the club, it's a natural process, the fans must not forget that."

I hoped he could have stayed 1 more year but looks like he's off.

I havent seen any of the footage from the awards. What was his demeanor? I'm sure he's off as surely he would have signed a new deal with us by now. There's nothing else that can change in the next few weeks.

He looked like he wanted it to be over asap. But he looked like that last year too.

When he was in Sydney for the tour the only time he left his hotel room was for training and the game he never went out on his nights/days off to see the City or go out with the players. That could just be his personality being quiet and reserved and not outgoing or the partying type.

I was sat there a bit pissed off with De Gea before today's awards show. But do you know what? I'm not sure why I'm so mad with Dave. He deserves to be playing for one of the best clubs in the world. We're not there yet and I don't see it happening next year either. Can't blame the guy for wanting to go home. It's just gutting that it's Real Madrid he's going to. I've transferred my hate to them.

United won't sell this year, Madrid looking at Leno I presume.

I would have no problems with him at all, it would just be genuinely gutting to lose him. You've only got to look at it from his point of you and you can understand why he would want to go. If you're living away from home, especially in another country, away from your girlfriend and family, and you're offered the chance to go home then it's going to be extremely hard to resist. Let alone when that chance to go home also involves playing for Real Madrid.

Amazing that those were my exact thoughts too, will always remember the Crazy saves he made and the number of sure shot goals he saved.

Got to be bullshit. De Gea is world class, Spanish, better than Leno, wants to move to Spain and he'll be very cheap. Madrid have to be completely idiotic not to go for it.

United are under absolutely no obligation to sell this summer.

If we just flat out refuse to sell, then what can they do? Although I suspect if there is any truth, then it's more Madrid just saying, 'he's not our only option, we'll not be bent over on the price..'
