Gay Marriage

So, turns out I am an Irish citizen (despite having a British passport) but still can't vote because I ticked the wrong box on my electoral registration form. That's quite the cock up. Well done me.

Yeah, I think with that level of ineptitude it's a good thing you can't vote.

I don't say this often.. but I'm proud of the Irish people today. Fingers crossed for a yes vote.

Oh proud yeah?

I voted yes and all that....(Yay go me me) etc etc

But where were these people over the last couple of referendums in regards the EU etc etc...

Where were they?

They couldn't be bothered.

Nah they either pissed off to another country or weren't arsed voting....Yeah...Should be so proud

Fact....Majority of people who demanded we vote yes, are the same people who use the word Faggot, Jessie, Queer etc on a daily basis. I'm not proud of any of them!

Oh and least we forget about the vote for the president...No one seemed to give a shit about that so long as they got likes on Facebook.

I can't wait for the next vote, where people don't bother their arse and yet, still complain.

Us Irish are wankers

To be fair, it's a lot easier to have a serious opinion about whether same sex couples should be able to marry than it is to have one about a particular EU deal.

There could be a vote tomorrow that says, "Should Germany rule Ireland" and the pricks won't vote....

They'll bitch and moan and say they had no choice in the matter and then leave the country.

Given the government we currently have in the UK, I think I'd be inclined to take a chance on German rule, were we presented with that opportunity...

It is rare that you get a referendum on something so simplistic as this. You can't compare it to other much more complex issues in any meaningful way.

I agree 'we voted for a thing that should obviously happen' isn't a thing to take great pride in, mind.

Exactly, it's not!

And I genuinely was torn

Homosexual people have the civil partnership already....And they say, it's not about kids....Course it is!
How can two men relate to a teenage girl when she goes to puberty?
If they get divorced, who gets who? Since it's the mother who usually gets custody.

Everyone should have equal rights etc. Hence my vote.

Needs to be a vote for equality for Status Quo fans....Sick of being laughed at :D

The same way that single parents, of either sex, relate to their kids of the opposite sex.

Anyone know if it's possible to get a breakdown of votes on some site or find out what way specific areas voted?

I know you've a bit of a bee in your bonnet about the Irish and voting cause hardly anyone voted for you and your band the time ye were on You're a Star Ireland n' all but fecking hell you're taking this whole thing way to serious.

Exactly. I cant help wondering how single parents have found a no campaign that's basically told them they are failing their children.

Yes vote has won, the presidential vote hasn't.

I'm slightly baffled by this.

The presidancy of Ireland is a largely meaningless role, yes? Why do people care how old the president is?

Very glad to see the landslide win for equality over in Ireland.

Did I read correctly earlier though that abortion is still banned?

Considering how young Collins and Pearse were it's shocking.

What a great day, not just homosexuals, but for the entire country. Feeling very proud.

Quite proud about this. A lot of people are getting a bit carried away but it definitely reflects well on Ireland. Which is nice.
Having a referendum on it has certainly worked. It's making me wish we'd had one. It would've been a forgone conclusion but there's something to be said for really hammering home to those who do oppose it that they are a dwindling minority, despite what their circle of friends may believe.

MAYO 52.47% Yes; 47.53% No (FINAL TALLY)

DONEGAL SOUTH WEST 50.8% Yes; 49.2% % No

DONEGAL NORTH-EAST 52.84% Yes; 47.16% No (Final Tally)

CAVAN -MONAGHAN 52% Yes; 48% No

These seem to have been the closest constituencies of them all.

It's insane to think how much Ireland has changed in twenty years. Divorce was only legalised in 1995, and only by 9,000 votes. Now gay marriage, it's an incredible shift in attitude probably representing the break away from the church.

Unnecessary though, Ireland had to do it (I believe) as it required a change to the constitution on the definition of marriage. If we had to put a referendum out on every bit of common sense social liberalisation legislation, it would end up being fairly costly and time consuming. Much rather leave it to the elected representatives when at all possible.

We could've just had it along with the European elections. Wouldn't have cost much, I wouldn't have thought, and I'm not sure there are many other issues that could be similarly helped by a popular vote (these days).

Slightly surreal that this seems like a big achievement when I have yet to meet anyone of my generation who wasn't in its favour. Obviously they are out there (somewhere) but its a bit odd when it seems like you're living in a bubble where the opposition point of view doesn't exist anyway.
