Not sure how Ed Woodward can play hardball here? De Gea could easily just play this season and sign on a free in January. It's not like Real Madrid are in desperate need for a keeper; they have two who would fit into most top teams already.
Well it's also not like we're desperate for the money. I think their fans might be a bit upset with Perez if he doesn't get DdG. They're used to getting a nice and shiny new toy every year. They're NOT used to being turned down.
Woody has the chance to give them a taste of the future. We don't want or need your cash, so think about other ways of pleasing us if you want your toy now!
If Woody learns from this situation as fast as he learned from our Moyesque-transfer massacre, I'm looking forward to future contracts. I'm sure he'll come up with one thing special to bind them all.

The only way United can win this one is if they offer De Gea so much money that he just says screw it and stays. But he might do a Sterling and refuse to stay for any amount and if he does, fair play to him. He'll be going to one of the top 3 teams in the world.
One more season from De Gea is easily worth twenty million to us so Real Madrid do have to make it up to us. Real Madrid want the player now and they do not have the assurance that he will sign for them come January, when Barcelona will be in contention too and De Gea might find it less of a betrayal to his boyhood club.
We don't want to sell, £20m-£30m is meaningless to us and De Gea won't be running his mouth off. We do have some leverage and no one really knows what the future holds - unlikely as it may sound De Gea could very well choose to sign what may very well be a record GK deal. If even if he doesn't sign we are better off making him play out his contract than receiving a measley amount for him.

This is the main point on all of this we really can live without the money, something Madrid aren't used to dealing with.

Say Madrid offered us £20-£25 million take it or leave it then It could well make some sort of financial sense to say no, DDG is on about £50 k per wk, we offered him £200 k so if he plays out his last year with us on £50 k it saves us £7.8 million in wages and puts off us needing to find the cash for a replacement this year, it also inflates our ego no end, there could too be the outside chance that DDG signs up during that year.

Now if Madrid offer £40 million it'll a be different story as that about his market value imo, also if they exchange a player like Benzema or Varane then again fair enough and we win.

I am really hoping this is how it'll play out, because to posture for weeks and then roll over to them will be hard to take.

Barcelona won't be interested, they've bedded in Ter Stegen perfectly. £20m is a good price pretty much, as long as it covers the replacement which could be Lloris or Cech, I don't really care.

If he went next year for free, I also wouldn't overly be bothered. Shit happens.

That's a really good point I hadn't thought about. We have one of the best keepers in the world on a tiny wage. Even if it's only for one more year.
It's a no-brainer for me now - Davy stays!

Woody did mention when he took over he wanted to stop all the best player going to Spain (i believe it was something along those lines anyway)

So the stage is all yours woody...lets see what happens!

Very good point made about DDG current wage as well.

The main issue with forcing him to stay is we'll have an unhappy player that we're forcing to stick around. It's bad for dressing room.

Yeah but why keep him when he wants to move? His heart won't be in it - you won't have him at his best

Like we forced Ronaldo to stay and got to a CL final and won the league with? We are only forcing him to honour his contract, he can leave for free after that.

Barca won the treble. Expect Perez to buy a whole new team like he did last time that happened. De Gea will probably be the first piece.

You could argue De Gea has wanted out since United began negotiating a new contract (which has been going on for most of the season) that didn't affect his performances so another season plus CL doesn't sound like a nightmare to me.

It's more about not been taken for mugs by Madrid imo, they are used to just getting what they want for what they want to pay, well with United they will find themselves in an awkward position because we can afford to say no if the deal doesn't suit us.

Re DDG not having his heart in it this is nonsense, if he drops a level then he will be dropped by LvG, and will Madrid really want him then? There is also the issue of a potential transfer ban for Madrid they need to get it done now, it'll be interesting how it plays out.

This. And he will also want to be Spain's 1st. choice keeper.

Because he signed a contract.

If he stays against his will he still has to play at his best. Or he won't have a chance at being first choice in the Euros, simple as that. Might even lose the opportunity at Madrid if they signed someone like Leno or Lloris this summer. So a shit season puts his career back a lot.

Well, it would put it back assuming he wants to return to Spain asap. Of course he could still renew and become a great here, another avenue that would close if he was forced to stay and then downed tools.

What if Madrid and De Gea are planning to run down the contract and it's united that are hoping the move will go through this year? It may well suit De Gea and Madrid more than it would United if the move happened in 2016

Lots of ''unhappy'' players have been forced to stay and clubs ended up enjoying great/very good seasons from them. From Modric to Suarez we haven't seen this situation poisoning the dressing room for the concerned clubs and in this instance DDG can take solace from the fact that he wil have his dream move at the end of the season.

We, on the other hand, could do without adding a GK to the already long list of positions we must fix this summer. If we keep him we buy ourselves time instead of starting the season with a new Goalie, new CB pairing, a new RB and a teenage LB. By keeping him we buy ourselves time to stabilize and look for the GK we want.

Yup, CR7 says hi!

It's in his best personal interest to always perform as good as possible.
I think at the end of the day they're all just a bunch of young blokes who love the game. I seriously believe that for those 90 minutes week in week out he'd do anything for his teammates. As they would for him.

The only worry I'd have would be if he had a bad streak as every keeper has once in a while. We have great supporters, but I could imagine some of us turning against him, maybe causing a downward spiral. Personally I'd take the risk though.

Not with a possible transfer ban looming.

That would obviously be a game changer but they'll know if that's going to happen. If not then it would seem to be in their interests for De Gea to stay and sign a pre-contract in jan.

Well then we seem to be playing the media better than Madrid.
As far as I've read it seems that Madrid want him, but we're not impressed by what they're offering. If we don't sell him, I think it'll make Madrid look weaker than us. It'll give bidding clubs and also potential future signings something to think about.
We'd be telling the rest of Europe "we can afford to do whatever we want".

If DDG scores 26 goals next season, it would be worth missing out on a transfer fee for!
Sure he won't be scoring 26 goals for us but his impact will be significant to what we achieve next season. For me it's a no brainer, unless they offer us something in the region of forty million he should stay.

I'd say we'd be daft to turn down £30m, but much less than that and we should hold on.

Sadly, I suspect we will actually sell him for about £15m this summer.

Your financial logic is good.
But, LvG has categorically stated that if any player wishes to leave the club, he will never stand in his way.
He wants players who want to play for Man Utd, not players who are being forced to play.

I believe Wellbeck left because he did not want to play for Man Utd, in the role that LVG wanted them to play in (ie. as a substitute).

Unfortunately, if DDG does want to leave, he will leave and our club will not make it difficult.

If we keep him we buy ourselves time instead of starting the season with a new Goalie, new CB pairing, a new RB and a teenage LB.

It does sound bad when you put it that way, but realistically we will only be buying 1 defender this year. Some fans believe we will buy an entire new defence, but this just isnt going to happen unless LVG wants to have another year of indifferent results and probably end up sacked.

He should be made to stay another year as it may give time for Real Madrid to completely implode under their own bullshit. Suddenly we are much more attractive, and David signs a new contract.

It's wishful thinking, but not entirely outside the realms of possibility.

ummm he has not signed a new contract with us so letting him play out his final year doesn't actually save us that 200k per week. Technically by your logic we would also save that money by selling him now.

Inflates our ego? Is that really a reason for not selling a player? Who's egos are you even talking about?

Thank God you lot don't work for MUFC. You're saying DDG has only appreciated 2.2M pounds since we bought him? The guy is a top talent. He will be their keeper and Spain keeper for the next 10-15years.

If United was buying from Madrid, you lot will be saying we should pay the going rate 50M pounds and if we don't, you go back and blame the Glazers.

As I said not having to pay him our new contract offer of £200 k p/w would leave him on for £50 k per wk for the last year of his contract , this would save up to £7.8 million in wages, it's just basic maths. If we sold him now we obviously wouldn't be better off on the wages as we would need to replace him, not sure what point you're trying to make on that really.

Maybe ego was the wrong word, it's more about not rolling over for Madrid on their valuation of the player, if Woody think he's worth £35 million, or a swap for Benzema then he should stick to his guns and only take that, Madrid are used to getting it their way but we are in a position where we can say no.

Worst case scenario we take the £13-£18 million hit and keep him for the last year of his contract., who knows he might just sign up again in that time.

Yes he can leave but only if Madrid pay our asking price, that is how it has to work.

If Woody tells Madrid we want £35 million he should stick to that, if Madrid say they will only play £20 million we don't just say 'oh go on then it would have been nice to get more, but as the player really wants to join you we'll take your crap offer anyway.

Have a read of this.

It seems that as of yet, no deal has been reached and perhaps Benzema may be part of the deal.
Knowing us, we will sell DDG for a low figure and we wont get Benzema.

Good to hear Woody is taking a tough stand on DDG. If we opt not to sell him and Real try to wait it out til next year, we have more time to work on offering him a new contract, during which Perez may opt for another keeper.

I'm glad you mentioned him, I think Benitez will be one of the most undermined managers in Reals history. Hopefully we will have some idea of what is happening after Spain's internationals.

its another baseless paper article.
Where are the sources?

my stance would be not to let him go, under any circumstance, until his contract is over.
dont care about money at all. He is our player and until his contract is up it stays that way.
Ed Woodward needs to tell Real Madrid to do one, its about reputation here as far as im concerned

feck Real Madrid

Safe to say Madrid will be in massive turmoil unless Rafa produces next year, and by produces, I mean a league and CL. If not, he will be sacked and Ronaldo may well be off since he will have his goal record by then.
