I can see why van Gaal would like Ramos. Good ball playing defender, but dare I say it he'll be surprised by trips to Stoke and Leicester etc. I do feel his goalscoring exploits cloud peoples judgement of him. I'm still of the belief that a defenders first job is to defend, and the goals they can score should be regarded as a bonus. Haven't seen enough of Otamedendi, so it's probably best for those who have seen more of him to really pass comment on him.
You're a barca fan! How can ability on he ball be a bonus!?

I dont care about how old he is, or the price.

I just dont think he is very good.

What does this post got to do with what I said? Just because I have my concerns about getting Bastian and Ramos that doesn't mean that Id rather stick to Smalling and Jones. There are other players around. Coleman/Darmian, Otamendi and Stones would be great additions in defense. Schneiderlin in midfield. We owe Jones and Smalling nothing

I apologize, should have realized it had nothing to do with Ramos; the names "Smalling" and "Jones" just bring out the worse in your posts.

Could someone explain to me why Sergio Ramos would want to leave Madrid to Join a struggling United? Maybe he really wants to make a name in Premier league football?
There is one reason. His Dad has a soft spot for United. He's United supporter and so Ramos grew up with red-tinted perspective of the club. He spoke about how he and his Dad consider United and Madrid to be similar clubs in that they both posses the ambition to be at the absolute top. Something he admires. So it's not that there's absolutely no motivation for him to come here.

I agree with most here that he has a long list of negatives, as well as posities.

But of all the defenders we've been linked with, there isn't one we can't say that about, and there isn't one that's better. Signing him or Otamendi would be great as we can't go into the new season without a new CB.

there's got to be a better younger CB out there who is available(ish)

hard to think of many in the PL...

Ramos is 7/10 defender - solid but vunerable and rash at times

if we end up giving them De Gea, even with a year left, plus anything more than £15 we are mugs

Not really, and thats the trouble in with this forum. Just because someone asks for quality competition that doesn't mean he hates the 'first teamers'. Actually competition is healthy even for them as it will keep them on their toes and will also provide them with the sheltered environment they need for them to grow. I dont think that having Jones and Smalling as undisputed first teamers is good for them, they certainly not ready for that role.

I want quality competition for Jones/Smalling as much as I dont want them sold.

I would trust the Real fans who have watched him for the last ten years more than anyone else on here that he's a class act

Ramos is a great defender. He has a few mistakes in him throughout thr course of a season but then so does every defender on the planet. 3 red cards in a row v Liverpool for our very own Vidic and Ferdinand was well known for lapses in concentration. People need to stop pretending they never made a mistake. The revisionism on here is hilarious at times.

He's a massive upgrade on what we've got, has won literally everything there is to win. I can't believe people are against the idea.

Personally I don't even think it will happen, but I'm not against it at all.

Indeed, gray areas not allowed

The problem is that some people think that we owe the British national sides something ie by playing their players etc. I fail to understand that especially considering the despicable way some of our players had been treated to the years. I believe that we should buy/play players out of merit and not because of their nationality. I also think that competition is healthy as it makes the team less reliant on that player and will spur the players to give their 100 per cent week in week out

ramos, otamedi, smalling, shaw.....

I'm actually warming up to the idea of signing ramos. The one thing he has over otamedi is big game experience.

He would a good signing.

Some are scared that Smalling "magnificent in the second part of season" and the new Duncan Edwards will both end up warming the bench next season just as when United actually had two world class CBs in the team

That's not looking for healthy competition, that's you mocking them.

I am just mocking the ridiculous things being said about Smalling and Jones throughout the years and which reveals my irritation of having people overrating or justifying players to ridiculous levels. In my opinion, this attitude is the main reason why England cant win a damn thing. With all their white Peles, the new Duncan Edwards and the 40m Hurrikanes they cant get past the Italian national sides even though they had never been as weak in their history as they are now. Let the players football do the talking and not the hype surrounding them.

I believe that Rio (whom I rate the best defender of his generation) had recently come out with something similar to what I said. Its ridiculous that players like Sterling and Kane are rated 40m he said. Guess what he's right

People have a tendency of actually over-exaggerating the so-called hype surrounding English players and the national team. For the large part it isn't there. We have a critical press that isn't fearful of telling it like it is.

We also love a good narrative. Harry Kane's rise is a good story to report and write about, hence it was covered to the extent it was. Don't conflict that with the belief that he is infact worth £40 million, because the reality is that few people aside from the Tottenham board actually hold that belief.

Exactly. He will be a key player for United, but not as a right back. He will be in the central defence. If we sign him, he will be the leader we have missed in the defence. Great player.

Or maybe being looked at due to his versatility, RB + CB and more importantly DM, maybe Ramos is the alternative to Schweini and Schneidi, hence why neither of those deals have progressed, sign one player to cover 3 positions instead of 2-3 players even if he costs £40m it is a cheaper alternative!

We are going to play him on those 3 positions at the same time ?

We need a CB
We need a RB
We need a DM

Signing one player that could play on all those positions doesn't solve all those 3 problems

Beside Ramos has been absolute cack in the midfield.

Not really. Anyone who sees Jones-Smalling as good enough to be regular and undisputed first teamers are overrating them.

In any seriousness if Real Madrid play hardball and this ends up with us not signing Ramos we shouldn't let them have DDG.

There may not be a swap deal but if they are lenient in the Ramos deal we should be lenient in the DDG deal, if they are impossible in the Ramos deal we should be impossible in the DDG deal, even if it ends up with us losing him next for year for nothing.

Agreed.

Also, if we sign Ramos it will have to be one of the most unexpected signings by any club ever, simply because no one thought he could possibly be bought.

What's interesting is that the bookies aren't having it -- he's still 1/4 to stay in Madrid, 7/2 to come here.

Alvaro Arbeola has a lot of those same accomplishments.
I dont think Arbeloa played as many of the games as Ramos. But lets get this right, Arbeloa isnt good as compared to who? Like Rooney isnt that good ahen say compared to Messi. But hes still good right? Its all subjective. If you win those trophies, you dont do it by being average. You need to be consistantly good over a long period to win that haul. Anyone that thinks differently knows ....

From James Ducker:

Manchester United have made an opening bid of about £32 million for Sergio Ramos as they seek to exploit the Spain defender’s fallout with Real Madrid, and are also in pole position to sign Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton.
United’s offer for Ramos, which was submitted in writing, came as the centre back underlined his intention to leave Real this summer during talks with José Ángel Sánchez, the chief executive, at the club’s Valdebebas training ground yesterday morning.
Ramos’s contract stand-off with Real has turned ugly in recent days because the player is convinced that he has been the victim of a smear campaign orchestrated by Florentino Perez, the club’s president, since indicating privately that he would be prepared to leave the Bernabéu.
Despite the escalating acrimony, Ramos remains hopeful that Real will drop the £129 million buyout clause in his contract out of respect for his service over the past decade in the hope of pushing through a move to Old Trafford.
It is thought that a bid of about £45 million would be enough to persuade Real to sell, although United harbour reservations about paying so much for a 29-year-old with no resale value.
The cash offer for Ramos is believed to be independent of David De Gea’s prospective move to Real, but United view the situation as intertwined and are likely to use their Spain goalkeeper as leverage in an effort to secure the defender. United are also favourites to beat Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Schneiderlin, the £24 million-rated France midfielder, who said yesterday that he expects his future to be resolved shortly.
Southampton are resigned to losing Schneiderlin, who has two years left on his contract at St Mary’s, although it remains to be seen if Louis van Gaal, the United manager, moves for the 25-year-old in addition to Bastian Schweinsteiger, of Bayern Munich.
“The negotiations should be completed in the coming days, hopefully before the resumption of [pre-season] training next week,” he told the France Bleu Alsace radio station.
Ramos, who has two years left on his contract at Real, was requesting an increase of about £3 million on his annual net salary and was furious at attempts to paint him as a mercenary, a position reinforced by those close to him.
Pedro Riesco, who works with Ramos’s brother and agent, told Radio Marca on Tuesday: “With everything that has happened, it will be very difficult for Sergio to stay at Madrid. There is so much manipulation to discredit his name via spokesmen who behave like puppets, saying he is not respecting the club and that he is just a money-grabber.”
If Ramos moved to United, he would be reunited with Ángel Di María, his former Real team-mate, who, despite admitting yesterday to being unsettled in Manchester, appeared to rule out the prospect of leaving. Barcelona were reported to be the latest club interested in signing the Argentina winger, who endured a dismal debut season in the wake of his British record £59.7 million move from Real, but insisted that he was determined to win back his place after starting only one of the final ten matches of last term.
“It was difficult for me to be a substitute,” he told Olé, the Argentine daily sports newspaper at the Copa America in Chile, where he is competing.
“For me, for my family, because things are not going as you want, because I am not playing, because you go in with one intention and you end up on the bench. It was a bit difficult to explain why I was not playing, although it was not the case that, because I cost a lot of money, I had to be a starter.”
Asked if he would consider leaving United, Di María said: “No, I am not someone who thinks like that. At Madrid, there were moments when the whole stadium whistled me, but in the end things turned around. I like to take things on when it seems difficult, to show what I have been doing for years.”
Another unsettled United winger, Nani, is close to joining Fenerbahçe for £7 million.

If Ramos is a 7/10 what is smalling?

Imo

Ramos:
Defending without the ball: 7.5/10
Skills with the ball: 8.5/10
Attitude on the pitch: 9/10

Smalling:
Defending without the ball: 8.5/10
Skills with the ball: 2/10
Attitude on the pitch: 7/10

Bosingwa was utter shite and won 2 CLs.

Things are getting ridiculous in here. One or two of you need to take the time out to apologise to things are getting ridiculous in here and row the boat ashore. As human beings our responsibility is to our football clubs and then our family. And some of the accusations about Phil Jones's school photographs have been nothing short of wind up the grandparents. Yes, the pre-season is approaching but no, what we don't need is another Van Gaal speech. The transfer forum is in danger of spilling over into the current affairs forum and if that happens our whole livelihoods could class of 92. You in particular have been in all sorts of out of order about Ramos's blonde get out clause. If Hadiri had done a better job with him at Valencia the BBC wouldn't be setting the bar so Shearer says, "You tell me" and people have a knock at him but you tell me. Will Ramos play for United? After the events of page 43 of this thread he would have every right to very very batter Giggs. It's divisive so cut it out. And. Do. Players even still use dubbin after they polish their boots? If the defence isn't sorted out this season then goals will be a matter of wrecking football specials for a laugh. MUTV gets a lot of stick but at least they don't formalise when Smalling and Otamendi go Asian the trophies will flow. You know it. I know it. Round and Moyes are being proven smooven about that Fulham home 2-2 even though we were embarrased about his celebrations "I for one think a club like Mancheste Unite needs at least one Sergio" he said in an Real bar all horse. He's right

Just woke up, hungover as feck, and this is the first thing I tried to read. Cheers. And. Cheers. Thanks.

What a train wreck of a post

Just a wall of text and after reading it 3 times I'am still not sure what you are going on about. In the middle of the post are that actual sentences or just words that poped in your head and you wrote down without bodering about context or structering them into sentences ?

He's specialized in those kind of posts. :)

I still don't understand what he is trying to say after 4 attempts. If you try to get into it, it feels like a rollercoaster through his head spinning out of control, I literally get dizzy even trying to read it !
