People never thought he would be available, which he probably isnt.
Seems to me that opinion on Ramos' thuggery directly reflect the faith whoever expresses those opinions has in the manager.

Cantona had a charge sheet against him that would make Vinny Jones blush. In France and England he was guilty of a number of violent challenges that would have been classed as assault off the pitch: headbutts, flying kicks and elbows.
If there's anyone to laugh at over the last 2 years it's hummels.
Good for Germany but very poor at times for Dortmund, he gets caught out when playing on a high line also, that being said i'd happily have oen of hummels, Ramos, otamedi.
The last window was reasonably good IMO.
Falcao - Just a loan and is gone now.
Shaw - Injured most of the season but young and confident he will be our left back for a decade or more.
Herrera - Excellent signing IMO
Blind - Good signing and will be a very valuable squad player for numerous positions.
Di Maria - Agreed debatable. But he showed moments of brilliance at the start so way way too early to right off.
Rojo - Probably not great.
And from the season before both Mata and Fellani have played really well this season. We certainly wouldn't have got top 4 without either of them.
So basically an article based on yesterday's stuff in the Spanish media with a different take (the spanish were saying "too late", MEN, the worst source for United news nowadays, decide it's over).

But setting that aside, I have long thought we lacked a bit of steel in our side, a hard man if you will, and certainly some leadership. So on that basis, even if he is a wanker, maybe that counts in his favour a bit. Hopefully he will be able to strike the right balance, but his age (which is another thing that has given me some doubts) should help here, as older players often find it easier to control their tempers and learn to channel their aggression better.

I'm on the fence about Van Gaal - though I very much supported his appointment back then - but I definitely don't want Ramos, at all. For me, it has nothing to do with the manager, most of the other linked targets (Schneiderlin, Otamendi) I'd be happy with.
And I'm sure I'm not the only exception to your rule, so It's probably not as clear cut as you're suggesting, not everyone has an agenda
I've always been open on my opinions about signing players from other big clubs and certain types of players. I was dead against signing RVP under Fergie.
Well few things i never said:1) There is anything but my personal view of those players 2) That he is bad player or rubbish defender 3) That me not wanting him is good thing for club. What i said that there is something in players like Ramos,Busquets,Suarez what i really cant stand,which would poke me while watching them in our shirt (if they are same before joining us).
Going on last years stats, Barcelona had 70% possession on average and played 80% of games away from their defensive third. That is miles ahead of any other team apart from Pep's Bayern. Makes being a central defender in those two sides a hell of a lot easier.
We massively overrate defenders in other countries at times, particularly if they play for Madrid or Barca. Pique wasn't remotely close to a starting place at United yet went to Barcelona and immediately became a first team player. A year later he was being heralded as a world beater. Same would happen Rafael (for example) if he went there tomorrow.
With the attacking players those two sides have, if their defenders were as good as we all seem to think they are, they'd each finish La Liga with over a 100 points and compete for the Champions League final every year.
Terry, much as I hate him, is still putting in performances of a very high level. He's probably done at international level so I'll concede he might not belong in the top bracket. Thiago Silva on the other hand, is still very much world class and only 30 years old. Probably the only defender currently playing who deserves to be spoken about alongside recent greats like Cannavaro, Rio, Vidic, Terry, Maldini, Nesta etc. He dragged that Brazil defence to a world cup semi final for gods sake! Look what happened when he was out for the game against Germany.
If we didn't sign RVP, then City would have done it. Which would mean that they would have won 3 titles in a row, while our last title would have been in 2010-2011. So, Fergie was right to sign him.
His 17 goals the following season (especially his hat trick at UCL) helped us on that dissapointing season. Without him, we would have probably finished 10th or so instead of 7th, and get emberrased from Olympiacos.

These are unusual times, though. We're lacking any kind of stability and need a short-term fix to keep us sitting at the table with all the other big clubs. In that scenario, I can put my scruples to one side.
Ramos is very similar to Vidic in that he is a very pro-active player and gets involved in all the difficult situations during the game. He might not always make the right decisions but he tries to get his head to everything, get on the ball and loves to put a foot in. For a team like Madrid which pays barely any attention to the defensive side of the game, he is a vital component.
It is why I prefer him to a defender like Hummels who seems very passive in nature. Our defence needs someone who is quite gung-ho but has balls, a proper winner who can shake up the defence both in and out of possession.
In our side we have a lot of players who do not like to get involved when the situation gets tough and tend to take a back seat. Guys like Schneiderlin, Ramos.. quite the opposite.

Ramos is gonna end up with a big fat contract whether it is with us, Madrid or someone else.
Are we looking to sign a footballer or an office manager? Anyone who liked Keane (especially after THAT tackle he admitted in his book) and didn't want to get rid because off this has absolutely no right to moan about Ramos' behaviour. I loved Keane and I would love to have a player of Ramos' quality and attitude in our team!

He is but he is also still developing. Fine line between being shite and reckless, or being a highly rated warrior on the pitch. Jones still needs to prove himself.
Ramos will never cut out bad decisions it is part of his make up hence why I do not rate him as highly as the defensive greats from the previous era, but the amount of positive influence he exerts on a game in general hugely outweighs the negative sides of his game in my opinion. Definitely one of the best defenders in the game currently and at the age he is, the older he gets, he might even get better to be honest.. becoming less athletic may force him to use his brain a little more to compensate.

I sort of agree. I agree with your first point about him being pro-active, which is great as Smalling has shown that he is a monster of a covering defender who reads the game well and physically is extremely hard to conquer. And yes, I'd also prefer a defender of his type to Hummels - Otamendi or even Godin.
Schneiderlin is definitely not the most pro-active, which I think bodes well for him replacing Carrick who isn't either. I think with the arrival of Depay, you'll have a few attackers in him, Di Maria, Januzaj and Rooney who won't look to shirk responsiblity. Fellaini I just don't frankly rate anywhere other than in that wide #10 role. and going about putting in late challenges in CM (like against Sociedad) is not the gung-ho nature we require. But that's for another thread.
Ramos' aggression to meet aerial balls in both boxes will be vital. Offensively for obvious reasons but defensively to relieve the pressure of a reactive keeper such as Valdes, who might not have the presence to claim high balls against the more vigorous attackers in this league.
That said, gun to head, I'd still say this is heading to a contract renewal sadly. Hope I'm wrong.

For the people complaining about Ramos mentality, You must have short memories as we had a player playing for us who actually ended someone's career. If this place was around when we signed Keane I'd dread to think what it would of been like.

I voted for the 'undecided' option, I'm really not that fussed about this one. I've never rated Ramos that highly and I'm not going to start now he's linked with us. Bonkers money being reported as well.
Ppl will be all out for you but will of course obviously ignore Keane's intention. He didn't end his career, but his intent was clearly to injure him / to "hit him f****** hard".

Schweiny played 15 games last season. Is 30 years old. If we are putting together a great spine which looks to be in LVG's thinking I'd much prefer it isnt all players around the 30 mark as Rooney is knocking on that as well. Just my personal opinion....
I do. Not only do we get a quality player in a position we need but we show Madrid we're no longer their bitch and give the club a bit of their own medicine.
