So we put in a first bid of around 50mn which was rejected and people now want us to stop at that ? Two seasons back when we underbid for Fabregas we had everyone saying how can you expect to sign him for so low and now people are pissed that we are bidding high . I frankly don't like money being spent if later I realise that there was no real plan behind the transfer , like in the case of Fellaini ,Mata ,Herrera and Di Maria it felt for long that managers bought them without actually deciding if they were any use to us. In this case I have no such doubts , we need a CB and he will not be sold for cheap so we need to be ready to pay big .

Completely agree with this. This signing would be about so much more than what it adds to the team. This will be Woodward doing what he said he would and showing Real that United can compete with them for top players. It also comes in a summer where Real thought they would stroll in and take De Gea for peanuts. If United take Ramos it would be hilarious. This is the guy who Real brought Hierro's #4 shirt out of retirement for.
As for the signing itself, Ramos would be a great addition. He is a fantastic athlete and could easily have another 5 years as a true world class defender. He might even force his way past Jonny Evans into the first team!
I think £35m is the most we should go to and then if it's a no go we go to our next target and buy him whoever that is. Otamendi, Hummels, whoever. I just hope we don't mess around with players we can't sign. I don't understand how it's so difficult to negotiate transfer fees, in one 20 minute conversation (if that) you could surely find out if the club have any intention of selling and if so how much for - if you can't then negotiate a suitable deal then move on. What is so difficult about it?

Not entirely, as di Maria was already somewhat replaced with the arrival of James, despite it not being a direct positional replacement. I think it'll be harder to find a suitable replacement for Ramos, not just due to his footballing, but also his leadership qualities.
Still boggles the mind that people would turn their noses up at Ramos for £35m-45m but wouldn't blink twice at Otamendi for £35m, a guy who is 28 next season and has only had one impressive season at the highest level, and has very limited Champions League experience.

If that's the case then we shouldn't be dumb enough to offer such a large amount of money, as it'd increase our leverage on them. Even if other clubs were to pay the ridiculous amount being speculated, let them take the risk, not us. There are other great targets out there that can be had for less, which brings me back to my original point of not investing too much time and energy into Ramos while potentially missing out on others.

I like Mata but he was bought as a matchwinner. The only time he's really done that was against Liverpool. He's chipped in with goals here and there, rarely crucial and has been guilty of being too safe. It's easy to forget he was a 20 goals, 20 assists player at Chelsea.
Back to Ramos, I think this is either a masterstroke by Woodward or going to be one of the worst transfers ever. On the one hand, Madrid pushing up the price and refusing to sell to us discourages them from trying to low ball us on DDG. I'm also sure that Madrid fans wouldn't want DDG if it meant Ramos leaving, so perhaps this gives them so this encourages Madrid to either (i) not pursue DDG as heavily as it becomes more unpopular the more talk there is about Ramos leaving or (ii) pay up on DDG to stop us digging our heels in.
Of course this all assumes our interest in Ramos isn't genuine. Ramos is a good player, but I'd rather let Smalling and Jones form a partnership than spend £40m on someone who's 29, has literally nothing left in football to prove and has no affinity for the club. What's to stop him phoning it in, once he's bagged himself his last big contract? What's his incentive to stay if he spends a year in Manchester and doesn't settle? I'd rather sign a player hungry to play for us.
Reading some of the posts in this thread, you get the idea that otamendi has been consistently one of the worlds best and has no risk of failing, while Ramos is the second coming of Titus bramble. Ramos is one year older and has done it for a decade now, surely he is worth 10-15 million more.
Id be happy with either, I just don't get how 50 mil for otamendi is suddenly great value for money, and 10-15 more for Ramos is Madrid getting the better of us.

Both players are massively overpriced due to how poor the current generation of centre backs is.

Ramos has played 4 years as a CB and never had better season than Ottamendi. Ottamendi for 35m pounds will make more sense.
I feel like this is more about dick swinging than actually improving our squad sensibly, I think it's just a matter of showing that we can take players from Real and not wanting us to be perceived as a Real feeder club.

I totally agree that Ramos is being underrated by some, but I suppose those will say we are over rating him. I don't really see the flaws that others are seeing regarding him being error prone but then is there a defender who never makes any. He's exactly the sort of defender we need. An aggressive centre half with strong leadership qualities and good with the ball.
