Looking through Damon's filmography I'd pluck out Behind the Candelabra (the best thing Soderberg has done since Out of Sight), True Grit (I liked it but I had a soft spot for the original and this was a much better film; also Damon's performance isn't anything to shout about) and then nothing back until The Talented Mr Ripley. So I'm inclined to side with Nilsson on this one, even though I find Damon likeable in real life.

Did anyone see Promised Land? A Gus Van Sant film that is the most un-Van Sant thing ever, and was a straight forward (boring) film about Fracking? That starred Matt Damon... probably the most boring thing the mans ever done.

Yeah I saw it, Jim from the Office was in it as well. I didn't dislike it, but it was definitely boring. Mrs. RiP had a lovely nap all the way through.
Damons best shit is insanely random cameos....which have kinda been ruined now. But still even when randomly showed up at something like Finding Forrester....it was like "wtf was that Will Hunting?"....mind you this is way back, and I obviously didn't know the Gus Van Sant connection or shit like that.

Minor bit of trivia: about five years ago, there was a brief(?) brouhaha in Hollywood that lasted about two years where big-scale-space-backdrop/sci-fi was the next 'big/hot' thing (along with Biblical/Egypt projects). Hence Gravity, Interstellar, Prometheus, and about a couple dozen others properties that got bought (but then not produced)

Yeah, but The Smurfs only came out two years later, so I reckon it's much of a muchness.
Watched Ant Man yesterday. I really enjoyed despite suffering from the comic book hero fatigue. All the films have the same formula but this one didn't take it self too seriously and had some really funny moments.
It also had a spectacular Intersteller-isque 3D montage.

Hero was aesthetically gorgeous, but a bit drab. Jet Li doesn't do enough crazy shit in it. It's like the new Godzilla. When I watch a Jet Li movie, I wanna see Jet Li do crazy shit.
I think it might be a better film, objectively, than House of Flying Daggers though, but I enjoyed the latter more at the time. A lot of those mainstream 00s wirework fad kung fu films haven't dated well. I saw Crouching Tiger again the other day and the rooftop fight looks like that Mr Bean Snickers ad.

I preferred HOFD and all. It could be argued that it's even more aesthetically pleasing. Raise the Red Lantern is Zhang's best, though. In fact his earlier work was better because it had more substance.
Still not as good as Fist of Legend though. Fist of Legend is the effing shit. He kills the big baddie with his belt. His belt FFS! Big.

I adore House of Flying Daggers... stunning film, if not completely proposterous (though not as proposterous as something like The Fall mind you)... my favourite of that sort of genre, I still watch it every so often... think it holds up perfectly well (as does Hero to be fair).
Yes. And Twin Warriors. Which is terrible, but mental, and brilliant, but terrible.
There's also that one with a small kid, who is amazing, that's basically Baby Cart In Peril, only the kid is a kung fu expert, and the dad is Jet Li. It's amazing, but I cant remember what it's called. It also probably isn't amazing, but it definitely seemed it at the time.
EDIT: This is the kid, and Jet, but weridly not in the film I'm thinking of. However this trailer is definitely worth linking anyway, as it's amazing. It seems to tell you the entire plot of the film, and yet I'd challenge anyone to work out what that plot actually is. It's just a bunch of confusingly awesome shit, none of which seems to make any sense, for a myriad of reasons, the very least of which is because it's in a language I don't understand. I think I've seen it, but I've no idea, and I definitely need to watch it again, right now!
