It was a fantastic statement, with very subtle digs at both their club and manager, but still very professional and most importantly, made our stance known that we did NOT want to sell David at all. Honestly i've never been more proud of my club. Even moreso than the time SAF/Gill demanded the full 80m pounds for Ronnie.

am I right in thinking DDG will still almost certainly join Madrid in January or next summer though? For free.
He can't joint them for free in January. Most likely he'll join them for free next season after playing as our first choice this season, somewhat like what happened with Lewandowski and Dortmund. Ideally he'd sign a new contract but I'm not expecting that.

Just imagine the shoe on the other foot...say, somehow, we didn't get the Martial deal done. Do you think, for one second, anyone would believe that it was Monaco's fault? Of course not - they would, very rightly, call Woodward and LVG jackasses, waiting until deadline deal to save a few pounds, only to feck up a deal where all you had to do was pay what was asked to get a player that wants to come.

But somehow, in the DDG case, we've got our own fans saying United were the incompetent ones for not getting it sorted earlier. Amazing.

Why did we wait till the last day of the window? Did that help us in anyway?

'We showed Madrid', that is good and all, but was it advantageous to us?
United never put him on the transfer list. The obligation was on Madrid to follow up their interest.

Isnt this worse for United? Instead of having a very good keeper in Navas you now have a world class keeper sitting on the bench or playing within himself with his head not in it to run out his contract when he'll go for free? Or lose him in January.
Navas didn't even want to come here. De Gea will want to start at the Euros next summer so he'll have to do his best until he goes.

I'm assuming they got cold feet and sabotaged the deal at the last minute.
My feeling as well. It was a lot of money to give up for a player in the last year of his contract. I reckon they got cold feet in the final minutes.

It's strange how some people are not getting that we didn't want to sell. Though we accepted a deal - it was only because of certain conditions that weren't favorable. United have done a ton of business this transfer window - probably not enough, what have Madrid been doing? The way they spin things and the nature of twitter - people are easily influenced but it's not a difficult thing to understand. We are under no obligation to sell. We didn't want to sell. Our decision was based on weighing everything up. It's very simple and you know who's lying anyway - but especially when the FA are willing to back us up. As everyone knows, this is probably the first time ever. They don't do us any favors but proof is proof and that's why Madrid can't say much but you'll still get people that bought into their brainwashing...to blame United. It's a nonsense.

This has probably been the strangest transfer saga I've ever experienced.I always felt that De Gea actually moving clubs was secondary to the PR battle between United and Real. All the drama in the last day seems to confirm this.
Thoughtful post.

That's the worst analogy I've ever read. Did your car want to leave you?

Yeah that doesn't work at all. Cars generally don't express a conscious desire to leave their owner. KITT might have but that's neither here nor there since you know, he's a TV character.

If the last two words are true I'm a bit worried about you.

Every year.

Which one of you wants to be the one who goes from being normal to following me around the forum for the next three months insulting me after every post I make?

There is always one...well one plus Lance but I think he's banned, so there's probably two openings this time around. Amol's already bordering on making a start so if anyone else is interested they better get in quick!

The mood has changed markedly in here. Main thing now is to build bridges and get DDG mentally right

Yep.

Graham Hunter on the radio saying United are irked by Madrid's accusations and that we've briefed people "in a very heated tone". Apparently we can expect that to come out tonight/tomorrow.

Also highlighting Madrid's arrogant approach in leaving it so late as the main factor in the screw up.

Absolutely. Build bridges with de Gea and burn them with Real. We should not do any more business with that mob, in or out.

Calm down. I disagreed with your post, that's all.

It would have been better if United had released a statement which was just a giant middle finger tbh. It would have been about as professional, and would actually have been funny for the reason it was supposed to be.

Either that or you know, just do nothing, let Real make tits of themselves and preserve some tiny bit of dignity.

Whoah calm down, noods. I'll lay off if you're taking these disagreements as "insults". As I said you've always been a poster I've liked.

It was always my preference not to sell my car to my next door neighbour.

Upon my next door neighbour first offering to buy my car, I immediately decided to sell it to him.

I did everything necessary to try and sell my car to my next door neighbour, even though if I didn't want to sell my car, I didn't have to. I tried really really hard to sell my car to him.

My neighbour messed up the paperwork so he couldn't buy my car.

I'm delighted that I still have my car. I am not 8 years old or drunk..

My neighbour always commented on how he admired my car, and kept suggesting he'd like to take it off my hands for half its value, but he never really followed through. I was about to head away on a driving holiday which he knew about when he the day I was leaving he offered me the first reasonable price, and not only that offered a deal on his car which was perfectly respectable for my uses. Not as shiny but possibly more practical so I was willing to do it. I tried to get the details sorted out before I left but he kept dicking me about. I had to go to reach the ferry on time and saw him waving the papers and the cash out of my rearview mirror but it was too late. I hadnt really wanted to sell the car so a lot of me was relieved, besides, I got a call from another neighbour later that the neighbour had been talking shit about me all around the block.

What's wrong with the statement? Real are basically blaming United that they didn't get their precious Spanish keeper when they cocked up themselves and United have responded in a proper matter.

Exactly.

There wasn't much to agree or disagree with.

People are getting bitchy over the questioning of a silly PR statement that makes no sense and makes no difference to anything. Forgive me if I'm more amused by this than I am concerned by what they think of my opinion.

What would SAF have done? Probably got a decent keeper early on and then left DdG on the bench all season.

To be fair Noods it was a pretty stupid analogy. Unless your car is loveable 90s children's TV character Brum it doesn't really work.

Like he did with Ronaldo eh? He would've convinced him to see out his contract I think. Or extend, but with a release clause.

Good of United to release a statement to fight their corner however how anyone can think De Gea being here till the end of the season is a good thing is beyond me as surely he either simply won't be in a fit state of mind to play or might be but will be frozen out by LVG as his long term future clearly is not here.

I'd have preferred to see him gone with Navas coming our way. Now we just have a reasonably high earning passenger who is undoubtedly good enough to start for any team in the world but won't be starting for us due to non-footballing reasons.

The whole thing is quite sad to be honest, I much have preferred the money.

Like when he signed Bebe to replace Ronaldo? Oh, wait...

No he wouldn't. Ferguson would at least try to get the best out of this players.

This entire saga is worth it purely because of how funny that video of the fat bloke losing his mind with his computer is.

DDG is a professional and he'll get on with his job I'm sure. He's not Balotelli or Adebayor. He has been nothing but a true professional thus far in his career.

If he is frozen out, then LVG is the one who is the problem.

DDG is ten times the keeper than Romero is. And even if his head isn't in it 100% because he wants to sign for Real, he is still five times the keeper Romero is.
