That is fair enough, but I think one thing that has been totally ignored is that DDG himself does want to play for Madrid ..forgetting the gf and anything else..He may have come through the Atletico academy, but Madrid has always been the team in Madrid , and really in Spain too.

The last time I checked, there was generic reports that De Gea wants to make the Spain squad for Euro 2016 and will sign a contract extension to get regular game time he might otherwise not get. There would also be potentially a buy-out clause almost purely for Real's benefit. Has there been anything specific since this?

The problem we're going to have is that we're stuck with Romero unless we play De Gea and that would be pretty bad for us, however, if we do the sensible thing and play De Gea then there's no chance he'll sign a new contract since he'll get everything he wants.

DDG is easily good enough to make a huge difference to our season. Might be the difference between 4th or not, or between a trophy or not, or between getting through the group stages or not. If you agree with that then you have to play him, irrespective of his willingness to sign a new contract. We cannot cut our nose to spite our face. We can more than absorb the money we lose by losing him on a free.
We have arguably already dropped a point due to not playing him.
Perez is finding out, it's not MUFC of old that are willing to let top players go on the cheap, transfer fees these days for huge clubs is not a huge deal. So it's the positive that even in a top players last year on his contract, it's still not going to be easy to prize these players away. Perez should have payed the asking price, or given a fee closer to what United wanted, and DDG may have got what he wanted

These things are all true and obvious, not to mention the fact that our need for him is compounded by Romero being a sub par keeper, but Van Gaal strikes me as terribly stubborn, possibly enough to refuse to play a keeper who is set on leaving for free over one he brought in himself?

Quite possible, in which case he wouldn't have any complaints if we part ways due to poor performance.

I doubt Perez feels like he has been put in his place at all
I severely doubt that. Van Gaal always lets players leave if they want to, he's a family man and I'm sure he understood why David wanted to go and doesn't hold a grudge against him because of it. He also repeatedly said that as soon as the transfer window closes de Gea comes back into competition for his spot, and he'll win that fight with Romero easily once he's focussed as I'm sure van Gaal isn't blind and somehow rates Romero higher.
The only reason de Gea will be benched for a season is if he falls out van Gaal, and I doubt he would. He's been professional trough all of this so I'm sure it'll all be fine and David will play soon enough, maybe after building up some match rhythm first.
Which is why I cannot wait for his 3 years to be up, he has been a good transitional manager, not someone I would want for 4 5 6 years. Doubt he would do that and play an average keeper, or that will cause united more harm

Van Gaal saying that DDG refused to play, and DDG refuting that statement will not have helped their relationship one bit though..Because even if he did, the trust between manager and player in private conversations is now not a given.
That was during the transfer window, van Gaal said it'll be different once it closes. Do you think that David will now throw a tantrum at van Gaal, completely ensuring that he indeed doesn't play the rest of the season? They will talk to each other and everything will be fine in the end, van Gaal won't leak stories like that during the season unless de Gea disobeys him like Valdes.
David has been professional troughout all of this, I'm sure he will continue to do so. Van Gaal will reward him for that with a start if he does since he's better than Romero.
Thats not what I am saying at all..but Im saying that it will have affected their relationship..the element of confidentiality and trust has been broken..
For our sake, I just hope DDG just focuses on the job on hand this year, and save us points like he did before...Then at the end of the season we can see where we stand with this.
