When you create as many chances as we did today and we don't win, you just need to put it down as one of those games. Happy with Van Gaal.

Can't wait till he leaves. I'm sick of his boring, predictable negative football game after game. He just doesn't fit the United way.

His brand of football would be good if we could actually build up a comfortable lead first. You can't use his tactics from minute 1 and expect to win games.

He's spent £200 million and the only players we can turn to to win is a game are fellaini and Valencia

Anybody with half a brain (clearly excludes a decent chunk of the drooling nuFootball mob on here based on that poll above!) can see what LvG is trying to do.

He is NOT satisfied with sitting back and defending desperately before hitting teams on the counter, even away from home
He KNOWS that football has changed and you can no longer play 4-4-2 with out-and-out wide men
He IS aware that certain aspects of our squad require improving but he refuses to spend money for the sake of it on average players

LvG is exactly the man we needed. Hard-headed, arrogant and with nothing to prove. A man who can make the tough decisions, let players leave, bring players in and introduce a completely new, modern style of football to Manchester Utd. All while completely ignoring the opinions of journalists, pundits and daft supporters who expect us to win every game 14-0

In 3 years time when we are raking in the trophies again he will be sat their on a beach somewhere with his wife with a knowing smile on his face while we fawn over whatever manager put the icing on his cake

i thought after Chelsea away last season and all the position % we enjoyed and still Jose came on top would serve as a lesson to LvG as if he ever needed one that winning the position % and loosing the game means nothing.

being slow, static and predictable will never win you games. All it takes is an organized, compact team and you're screwed. Or bring Fellaini in hoof and hope for the best.

Subs were crap.
We're skint up front. Who else we could've put there?

PSV were only catching us on the counter and with pace. Mata isn't having the best game of his life, get an athletic pacy defensive minded midfielder on in Schneiderlein and push Herrera forward.
It was a draw with us the better side looking for a win, you don't put a defensive midfielder when you try to win the game.

Rojo should of came on at left back, you don't break up a CB partnership that's playing great together if you don't need too.
But in this case you needed to. Rojo is a bit crap on the left and Blind is miles better. On hindsight better sub would've been Valencia on for Rojo and Darmian on the left as Valencia has more pace.

Young was absolute dross, and struggled today. Wilson should of been on the bench to give us another option, why we had both McNair and Valencia on the bench is beyond me. Only need one of them and give Wilson the other spot.
In the second half I thought Young was good, he stretched them and put in some nice crosses. Wilson has 4 competitive goals for us in 18 games. Hardly worth mentioning.

The weak bench is LvG fault for gutting the squad this summer. He gets far too easy a ride on here.

Agreed. He put us in that position so it's a little too late. You don't start a season with 1 senior striker.

I'm sorry but the lack of options on the bench is all LVG's fault. He likes a small squad and this is what you get.

If we had brought on schneiderlin, the complaint would be 'why is he bringing on a DM when we are chasing a goal'. When he brings on fellaini (who has been branded our Plan B by almost 90% of the people who posted in his performance thread) he has lost it as he screwed up our midfield and he isn't United quality (someone who is better than hazard for Belgium)

I back up lvg in most of his choices and exspecially his playstyle.

But ill never understand how you can loan januzaj when we have so much problems when we need a sub LW/RW or striker.

If depay or young gets injured we have no backup for LW and RW.

Sometimes you need someone to counter a specific threat. PSV weren't good enough to pass there way through us, and we're only really a threat on the wings with pace on the counter. Neither Herrera nor Bastian are athletic enough to try to stop the wingers on the counter.

Mata wasn't playing great, and you push Herrera forward who's always good for a goal.

Liverpool brought Hamann on when they were getting beat 3-0 in a final and won the game.

It was completely niave by Van Gaal to not attempt to deal with PSVs only real threat. The boy with blonde hair and a stupid hair cut on their left kept flying forward.

I refuse to blame LVG for our loss tonight, some of our players messed up at both ends of the pitch. We should have won this really but sloppiness cost us the game.

feck our play style. Why would you care about that when something so horrible happens. :(

This is a legitimate criticism. I wanted a loan for Januzaj provided he wouldn't get the minutes, but right now it looks like he could have made a significant impression on the team. Shame, really.

Why do we all complain when we see Rooney in the center of midfield? Cause he's crap there.

He's not crap at left-back though, he's not great, he's about average... but then he's playing his first game of the season, and you're breaking up your really solid CB pairing? It doesn't make sense.

We have sold/loaned RVP, Nani, Hernandez,Di Maria, Januzaj, probably wilson and got in 2 replacements for them. I don't blame LVG for todays loss. But the lack of replacements have to be blamed on him.

I don't get it how 5 games or so can form a "solid" partnership in defence. Especially against sides like Newcastle, Villa and Brugge.

In the last 3 games we've shipped in 5 goals. Just saying...

The only criticism I place on LvG tonight are the subs. I thought they were poor.

Including today, in which Rojo was centre-back.

Are you saying we haven't looked solid in defence this season and Smalling and Blind haven't been a decent partnership?

We won't be raking anything in with this squad mate, wake up Jesus.

We looked solid in defence IMO because we finally have 2 solid full backs and a midfield in front of them to protect them.

Smalling has looked class, but the opposition so far hasn't been all that impressive.

Blind looked shaky against big strong strikers which we will see plenty of them come the middle of the season. Against Swansea for example I think he was poor.

2 of which were today with Rojo? One was Benteke with an unbelievable strike. One was a gk error and another an unfortunate counter attack. Hardly the sign that there's an issue in the centreback pairing. I wasn't keen on Blind there but he stepped in well and clearly had a good understanding with Smalling. Given Rojo can play left back seemed odd to split a cb pairing that had been performing well. I get it say at the weekend, with some time training etc but midmatch seems odd.

One of which was from a set piece which clipped Blind's head and the other goal Blind was at as much fault for it as Rojo as he lost his man.

In the other games we had most of the possession most of the time and the GK and defence were rarely put on pressure.

I dunno, Rojo isn't that bad at getting forward. He did play wing back for Argentina.

Iv never noticed it tbh, but can certainly point to a few occasions where Blind has contributed from that position. Think Blind can help Memphis a lot more than probably even Shaw could as a LB so that could be one positive if Blind stays there long term too.

Going from Shaws attacking threat to Rojos complete lack of wouldn't have been ideal tactically IMO.

If Rojo went to left back then Van Gaal would be getting panned on here tonight.

"He's no good going forward."

"Remember how good Blind was at left back last season."

Different people with different arguments, granted, but it really does demonstrate just how difficult it is for Van Gaal to please everybody.

Personally, Blind going to left back was spot on and I'd play him there at the weekend and for the remainder of the season. His crossing is a major threat and the one thing he can better Shaw at.

You can blame the manager all you want, but it's not his fault Memphis didn't finish well enough in the instance after he got his first, and it's not his fault that Mata missed another sitter.

But again that's not indicative of the partnership having an issue. Blind tried to block it, a pretty natural reaction, you try to do what you can, Young might not even have given a shout to leave it.

Well you can argue it that way I'd say they helped us keep possession by having such a good understanding i.e. covering each other, knowing when to push up etc. At the end of the day we didn't need to break up their partnership and it seemed odd to do so. Can't say whether it would have stopped the goals etc but we might have been more solid.

Yep, the fact that this is being discussed in here just shows how difficult a situation LVG is in at the moment.

His subs were mental and lost us the game.

Rojo at CB instead of LB was weird. But the worse was Fellaini for Herrera just when we started creating chances getting in behind their defence he took off Herrera and we resort to pointless hoofballs.

Atleast put Pereira on the bench. The guy shined brighter then anyone during pre season. He deserves to be on the bench at least.

Not blaming Blind for the first goal, but I don't think Rojo being in the center would be the reason for the second. It was Darmian fault at first place, they've whipped in a good cross, Rojo was attacking the space but the ball went over him, Blind is shorter so I doubt he could've done better. The PSV player attacked from behind so the CB's couldn't actually see him as they were attacking the ball. The left back - in this case Blind should've been with him all the way.

Besides, apart from the goals did we look shaky in the center of defence? I think most of our problems came from Darmian in the second half.
