Bundesliga 2015/2016

Yeah.. Weigl came pretty much out of nowhere (didn't Pep say he didn't really know the kid before he moved to Dortmund?), but he hit the ground running and already seems like one of Dortmund's most important players (probably even the most important player for their structure - at least as long as Sahin is still out). But you know, it's only been a couple of months for him, so I'd rather wait a bit more to see if he can keep this up consistently before I get the hype started.

I remember people saying similar things about Thomas Müller.

Still think Dortmund should have went all in for Geis...

Why? Weigl thus far has almost literally been a perfect fit for the role and tbh I can't see at all how Geis would've been better for it.

To keep him away from Schalke and he's a good player, he could have rotated with Gundogan or maybe do even better than Weigl.

In fact, I prefer him over Alonso any day of the week.
I prefer Kimmich over Alonso. I'm pretty sure that if Kimmich gets to start regularly, he'll impress as much as Geis and Weigl.

I don't think he's a fit for Gündogan's role at all. That one requires very good technique, dynamic and very clean dribbling and an eye for the killer pass, I don't think that this is Geis at all and tbh Dortmund shouldn't need to weaken Schalke when they already have Heldt.

For what role, though? In a midfield two it could be differently, but as single anchor player Weigl´s skill set is simply more suitable. He is more composed on the ball, has better positional awareness (this is incredibly important as there is no cover) and has better passing accuracy (Geis has better range, but this is less important in that position given the way we set up). The only thing that Geis would have really offered would have been set pieces.

The comparision to Sahin is even more onesided, as Sahin is even more solid defensively while offering the same things Weigl can. Geis would have to undergo a similar change in playing style as Sahin did after coming back (back then it was to make the pairing with Gündogan usuable vs. any competition).

I still think he would have been an excellent signing, even though he isn't a 1 to 1 replacement for any of your midfielders. A few adjustments in midfield and it could work, especially with a player so young and versatile.

With Gündogan maybe gone next summer, Sahin's constant injury problems (has he ever played more than 6 months without being injured since he left Dortmund in 2011?), do you really want to rely on Weigl, Bender and Castro? Obviously the future isn't written yet, maybe Gündogan extends his contract and Sahin will be 100% fit for the next 5 years, but Geis would have given Dortmund so many options longterm. And let's be honest, no one could have expected Weigl to step up so brilliantly and it's still far from certain that it'll continue like that. Don't get me wrong, I hope he continues to play like that, I'm happy for every young German who does well. I just believe that almost every team could have used Geis, because he's a fantastic young midfield talent. There's always a place for someone like him.

Not one he would have been satisfied with, though. When Gündogan renewed his contract, it was clear he would start if he comes even close to his old form. Sahin was expected to return to the team training at the beginning of the pre season and in Tuchel´s tactical set up would be ahead in the team ranking aswell. We had interest in Geis, but Schalke offered him a starter spot and pays as well as we do. It was the same with Julian Brandt, who choose Leverkusen over us because of the lesser competition and their willingness to give him a release clause. In the end we went for Weigl as the less expensive alternative, who was satisfied with the role as back up at the beginning.

Yeah, but that's a different story. You should have signed him, he just chose to go somewhere else. I get why he made his decision, not sure I agree that Dortmund shouldn't have tried harder to convince him to come anyway. Anyway, I don't mind it. It's great to see both Weigl and Geis playing such a big role in both clubs. If only Pep would trust Kimmich already a lot more :(.

If he continues to start Can at rightback, I'll go ballistic. It's insane, Can shouldn't be anywhere near the team.
 I hope Löw is watching the game. Can really shouldn't be an option for any position in defense. He's a decent box to box midfielder, but that's it.

Oh and Schalke are playing against Cologne. It's really weird, I want to dislike the team but there are so many great German talents in the side and on the bench, that I don't dislike them, I actually want them to do well. Very confusing situation.

Schalke: Fährmann - Caicara, Matip, Neustädter, Aogo - Goretzka, Geis - Sane, Di Santo, Huntelaar, Meyer
Cologne: Horn - Hector, Heintz, Sörensen, Olkowski - Bittencourt, Gerhardt, Lehmann, Risse - Modeste, Osako

Höwedes only on the bench. I really start to wonder if he might struggle to get back into the first eleven as long as they continue to win.

Modeste with the 1-0 for Cologne in the last minute before halftime. He's in fantastic form so far, great signing for them.

Chicharito is again starting for Leverkusen. Seems like he really gets a fair chance to find some form in front of goal.

0-2 for Cologne, Gerhardt. :cool::cool::cool:

edit: 0-3. Schalke  But Cologne played really well!

Schalke . Leverkusen would go up to 4th place if they beat Augsburg.

Bayern really looks like a class above anyone in Europe right now. I think it will take some of misfortune to not win the CL this season.

We've seen the last 2 years how one bad game and/or a few injuries can kill your chances in the CL. Form in the first half of the season means nothing for the CL.

Yeah I know all that but, I felt the same about Bayern early in the 12-13 season. Right now they have the strongest first 11, no obvious flaws and the best depth of all the major clubs.

I hope you're right, I have doubts though :nervous:

1860 sack Fröhling, Benno Möhlmann to take over:lol:

1860 are more and more like a roundabout at the Oide Wiesn (the traditional, old fashioned part of the Oktoberfest). Not the main attraction anymore by a long shot, all the excitable youngsters go to the modern tents but every once in a while you enjoy heading over there and look at that quaint, silly old thing going round and round and round.

That is true, and this is also why to me the 'only a CL win counts' mindset is so annoying.
We've played unbelievable good first half seasons under Pep, and so everyone is wringing their hands about the BuLi being uncompetitive. It only is because we've been so good. It's a great achievement to consistently win and perform in league games, week in week out.

If people adopt the stance that this all pales in comparison to a CL semi, that's a pretty blasé way of following football.
But no matter how much one feels we should be favourites for CL, a CL win cannot be planned, and ultimately not be expected.

Of course, our repeated form crises in spring under Pep have been very frustrating and I hope to god it won't repeat again, but I feel like that shouldn't completely overshadow what we do, and did, earlier in the season. Winning the league hasn't become easier or less worthwile, we're just doing it better, and it's won over the whole year.

Bayern are dwarfing the Bundesliga. Iirc their last turnover was higher than #2 and #3 (Dortmund and Schalke) combined and lately that has really been showing on the pitch. So it's only natural that people look more towards the CL where they meet opponents with equal ressources.

Bayern dicking Dortmund, im sure someone predicted this would happen a few days ago...?

I think the game was actually closer than the scoreline reflects. Tuchel's plan seemed to be working out, I think Bayern had trouble controlling the game in the first half, so it would've been interesting to see how the tactical battle would've played out if Dortmund's defense would not have made these silly mistakes which basically ended the game at the start of the second half. Bayern's efficiency was brutal though and them adjusting quickly with the attempts of long balls shows how versatile they are.

Which is fair enough, but more often than not the achievements in the Bundesliga tend to get forgotten due to the dominance, even though Bayern doesn't just simply walk over the league, but fight for the wins. A manager (even of Guardiola's calibre) shouldn't be judged on the performances in the CL alone because that just isn't fair, imo.

Let's be honest here. Guardiola is doing a great job in the Bundesliga, but with that squad (and Dortmund's recent problems these past two seasons) anything but a comfortable run to the title would be a huge upset. He's probably doing it in a lot more dominant fashion than most other managers could do it, but in the end it's still the result everyone expected and getting a couple of points more than a "regular" decent coach will soon be forgotten.

Of course it would be, I agree with you here. It's just that I don't think the results, performances, the team's form in the Bundesliga should be dismissed in favour for the CL or labeled as simply "expected" because of our financial advantage and the problems of our rivals (which it is, kind of, but imo that would take something away from this Bayern team. Or perhaps it's just me thinking that such a form the team's in right now ist not the norm, even for Bayern).

Scorelines don't lie. Dortmunds dropped points in the last 3 games now but still 2nd while Bayern have yet to drop a single point and only let in 4 goals in 8 games. They're just on a different level.

Of course not. It's totally insane to deny praise to the team just because Bayern have more money than the next clubs in the league. We're playing on an incredible level. And it's even more impressive if you compare what we spent in comparison to Real, PSG, United, City.

The critics are constantly moving goalposts just so that they don't have to give us any credit at all, it's hilarious. How many times did we have to read that it'll be impossible to replace the old strong core of Ribery, Robben, Schweinsteiger and Lahm. Does anyone give Guardiola any credit for playing on that level right now without Ribery, Robben or Schweinsteiger?

The following article posted in the Bayern thread is spot on and it's just sad if you have to listen to idiots like Hamann who thinks Guardiola only deserves a 5 on a scale from 0-10 for the work he's doing because he hasn't won the CL yet. I guess even if we win the treble this season, it goes up to a mere 7- because he failed to win the treble twice in 3 years.

Just look at the other big guys in the other leagues who have the same financial advantage to most of their competitors. It is not only about the way they play against their competitors...

I don't doubt that Bayern are a class apart from and more mature than their competition, including Dortmund. But the course of the game wasn't the one of a typical hammering and I think Tuchel's approach showed a way that might work with better execution.

Absolutely. I mean look at our squad and all the money we have spent on new players and we aren't anywhere near your level. Granted the PL might overall be on a higher level than the Bundesliga but it's not just point wise. You just have to watch how we play and then compare that to how you guys play and it's a difference like night and day despite both teams adhering to a fairly similar football philosophy.

Bayern atm plays some great football and it's also quite amazing how you managed to compensate for the long term injuries of two of your most important attacking players this season.

Sometimes I do not understand the impatience some of you guys have as van Gaal is overhauling the system - and that is not easy. And that does not work without making some mistakes, too - and it needs time. It did not work without problems at Bayern either even if we had some success already in the first year. And Bayern had some advantages with the bargain with Robben they made 5 years again and with van Gaal finding Müller who often saved him bad matches. If you do not find this players as bargains on the market or somehow in the youth department you need to buy them for much money on the market - and the market is very dry regarding especially top players in offense. There is the question of the compatibility of this players, too. Mario Gomez e.g. can be a real good striker and bang in goals in masses - but you need to make the system working for him (that is why he is playing for Besiktas now and after his injury problems starts to bang in goals again with Ernesto Sosa, another van Gaal reject, playing on the 10 behind him).

I agree there. We were not better by 4 goals, but our simple goals killed the game at some point, especially the first 3 were avoidable to say the least.

However i think the defensive stability has become a huge weakness in the last season in Dortmund with a lot of individual mistakes and so on. I remember a lot of games in the first half of the last season where they had to complain about those ridiculous goals they conceded, and it has begun again this season. I don't know the reasons for this, maybe the individual quality?, but if Dortmund is able to fix this they could be a threat in the future. But if not...

Well I don't think it's a problem with Dortmund's system, they generally don't allow their opponents a lot of chances. As you've said it's mostly "ridiculous" goals which result from individual mistakes.
Not sure if it's a psychological or concentration issue, since the players at the back aren't back defenders either. But at some point the frequency obviously becomes a question of quality.
