How so? defeat in the City game wouldn't be the end of our season, but we'll have to go to Palace afterwards, while City will have two three point bankers against Norwich and Villa. I think defeat vs City would hurt our season a lot more and our moral. A draw at Moscow would still see us in a good position to qualify.

It's October. No win or loss in in the league in October determines your season.

    This is true?

    That's mad.
Yep. As true as it gets. Heard it on the Football Ramble and later saw it on the whoscored website.
"CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev hasn't kept a clean sheet in the Champions League since they drew 0-0 with Arsenal in November 2006 - a run that spans 33 matches (including qualification)."

9 years without a clean sheet? Let's go for it!

    What a crazy game 4-4 Leverkusen/Roma:lol:

No one seems to know, I'm like the sixth person to ask this.
Manchester City played away against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday October 21st 2014. That was at 5pm. I don't get why we've got a late kickoff on the same day a year later. I prefer it this way, though.

Result wise don't know what to expect, performance wise slow controlled possession game with limited scoring opportunities, if we score our limited chances could win 0-2, if we don't could lose 2-0, there is no inbetween, no effective adaption to a match situation when we need goals. Tight squad not being rotated enough, got a reaction against everton but a trip to Moscow and match against city will require sheer will to get results, I don't see sheer "attacking will" in our team on a consistent basis, slow possession football with limited chances is common, what we are used to being successful is rotating effectively keeping players fresh, probably prioritising the derby, selecting a weaker side against Moscow setup to do a job and going all out against city, what you will likely see is the more or less the same team in both games. LVG has had a year here, given the intensity of the PL, lack of breaks between and the volume of games it should be a strategy, will be very surprised if this week has a positive outcome and that to me would be a draw and a win, in whatever order, should be using Wilson, Pereira and Lingard more as they are up to standard and could help keep the squad fresh.

cold night in away from home in Moscow plus a huge match on the weekend.

We need a strong muscular team which also has freshness, whilst keeping players fresh for the weekend. So I expect some strategic rotation including selection of the of Fellaini, Jones and Memphis and Valencia. Keep Mata, BFS and Mata fresh for weekend.

    Something like

    De Gea
    Valencia--Smalling--Jones--Blind
    Carrick--Fellaini
    Young Herrera Memphis
    Rooney

Apparently Young's still out. Lingard might get a game, as he did pretty well when he come on against Everton, although I reckon Mata will start this one.

    9 years!
That actually sounds pretty bad, if a GK can't keep a clean sheet.
I guess they must have an attack oriented team, which allows them to score goals and win, despite leaking so many goals.

Don't think Schneiderlin will start. Need him against City and that would mean starting three games in a week in CM. I expect Blind to come into midfield alongside Carrick or Schwein.

    We've cloned him

I agree though, rotation is very important now.

I'd go for Blind in for Smalling (we need to preserve the beast), Carrick for Basti and Memphis for Martial.

Keep Smalling, Basti and Martial fresh for the weekend.

We really have to win this game, taking out our three best outfield players seems a bit much.

I don't understand the obsession with resting players all the time... anyone care to recall the good ol' days where it was not uncommon for players to start every match for an entire season if not injured? Despite the advances in nutrition, health and fitness of professional athletes... some people seem to panic at the idea of a young player near their physical peak playing a few football matches in 8 days? That's not to say players don't ever need a rest but it's only mid-October and we need a result tonight.

LVG will put out a strong side similar to the one that beat Everton. I've heard that Lingard starts tonight following his cameo on Saturday.

Tbf, even with them 3 taken out, we should be beating CSKA.

    De Gea

    Darmian/Jones/Blind/Rojo

    Carrick/Schneiderlin

    Mata/Herrera/Memphis

    Rooney

Surely that's more then enough to get something tonight?

If it was an away game in Germany or Holland etc it wouldn't be a problem. We're playing a couple of thousand miles away in really shitty weather. It's not a normal 3 games in a week scenario.

The weather is not going to be alien to them. They play in Manchester during the winter which sees similar temperatures to what Moscow will this evening. The distance away is far from ideal so essentially the players have a 6 hour flight each way rather than 2 hours to other destinations... but it's not like our players are flying economy so they will be resting during their travels and are playing UK time so won't have the time zone issue.

Less fit lower league players up and down the country play 3 times a week and face similar travel times to what our players will tonight on a regular basis.

If we'd beaten PSV away I could understand resting players but we still have a big job ahead to qualify for the next stage. A loss like City suffered last season in Moscow would be a significant blow to our qualification hopes

@Niall Why does the header say Luzhniki? I can imagine a few meltdowns on here when BT start their coverage with pictures from the stadium.

Hard line up prediction , do we go strongest team or rest players for the derby ? No presser to give any clues , is Young fit ? Would be nice to play strongest team but we were slow out of the blocks against Arsenal and it may be better to keep a few players fresh . My big concern is Mike the beast Smalling , he has been outstanding this season and it is quite worrying how we will defend without him if rested but playing him every game is also a worry with his past injury record .

I'm gutted as I'll most likely not be watching the match tonight as I've got viral gastroenteritis and no one wants my germs.

I think i will ask this the third time but yeah, will there be any press-conference for the match or was it already, can't find any thread or any video on youtube?
I saw the pre-match interview in the OP but surely there will be a press-conference...

There was one yesterday evening. I read about it on MEN, this morning. No idea why there wasn't a thread.

You'd need to scroll down to just below the middle of the page. The press conference starts with : Van Gaal arrives....

LVG said he won't change much from the Everton game. I'll look for the link.

Only changes I can see are the likes of Carrick, Blind, or Memphis coming back in. They'd be like-for-like changes as well for Schweinsteiger, Jones, and Mata or example.

If Jones' whack to the face isn't too bad (I missed the Everton game) then he'll probably play at least 60. If we can establish a good lead, then giving Martial a break before the City game would be an added luxury and let Memphis get back into it. Schweinsteiger is probably the main one where we'd want him as fresh as possible for Sunday.

So have we an early kick off tonight?
