Louis Van Gaal | 2015-16 Performance Thread

Van Gaal: The verdict

  • 1) Sack him now.

  • 2) Sack him at the end of the season.

  • 3) Let him see out his contract and part ways after that.

  • 4) Extend his contract.

  • Undecided (between 1 and 2).

  • Undecided (between 2 and 3).

  • Undecided (between 3 and 4, if things improve before his contract expires, extend).

Just daft for the substitution. Completely overreacted.

This is another game where we didn't keep the ball for keeping the balls sake, when we actually needed to. There's no point being all about possession if you can't do it when you need it the most.

We play really shit football but it seems a bit churlish to blame LVG when we're top of the league. Besides, I love how he gives chances to so many younger players.

Some people are crazy or really obviously biased. We won in spite of van Gaal?

What is this idiocy? When we lose it is because the manager chose the wrong tactics or didn't coach the players well. When we win the manager somehow still made a mistake.

When we win games it's usually because the opponents were the worst football side in the history of man. Or something like that.

Top of the league and top of the cl group. So I would say so far so good for LVG performance.

He risked the result by saving Martial on upcoming week but it's really hard to blame him or staff for so many knocks and injuries. His trust in Memphis paid off and it was a risk he had to take as a manager.

Job done for the weekend, Fergie would take that result with a smile.

Took a gamble with his tactics both at the start of the game and after Herrera went off, and it largely paid off. I think we were a bit low on energy towards the end as Watford started to come back in the game in the last 15 minutes.

If we had Carrick fit, would have seen him come off the bench and stedy the ship. Did well considering our injury situation, and good to see the team get a late winner!

None of those things were happening before the change, the players lost their effectiveness because of the change, if you're randomly asked to change to a formation you've not played in for a year, how can you be expected to just flowingly adjust.
Because they have been training it and know how to play it? Could you explain what went wrong today and how this should be attributed to the tactical change?
Soft penalty? lol it was a stone waller ffs.
The Watford player was already falling over when the touch came, as a result of him backing into Rojo while illegaly holding his thigh. Could and maybe should have gone the other way, but 9 of 10 times a referee lets them play on. But the penalty also should have been disallowed for moving into to box before the kick was taken. To me that ads up to 'very unlucky'.

This logic is so flawed, I don't understand how people can't see that.

Last season it was "we only got top 4 because Liverpool were crap". Even though we took points of city, arsenal and liverpool to get there.

Soon it will be "we're only competing because the league is poor this year" because those that were convinced we would spend this season chasing 4th, or that we'd get "found out" during our October fixtures need to save face somehow.

Captain off form for most of the first dozen games. Drama with the first team keeper for the first month. Lost arguably best performer early into the season. Goalscoring drought, criticism media (pundits), a little heat from OT crowd. Hasn't done too bad to be one point off the top. You would think we are 8th or 9th down the table given the verdict of some fans.

His decision to switch to a back 3 today was genuinely mental. But such a Van Gaal decision.

'One player goes off injured, we shall switch the whole team around yesshh?!'

He got us a win, with a massively depleted team though, so all's well that ends well.

We haven't conceded from open play in 9 games, that's impressive.
I'm not convinced by our attacking play and I think we need to take more risks. But I feel that the team is gradually improving and that LvG as well as the players are learning/adapting. If that wasn't the case I'd be more concerned.

I didn't like the switch to the 3-5-2, I think it really impacted upon our confidence defensively. Smalling and Rojo both looked not totally comfortable. Got the win though and that is all that matters. He has us sitting pretty well 1/3 of the way through the season.

He can never seem to praise De Gea outright

He praises him by playing him in every single game.
Rooney and De Gea are the 2 certainties on our team sheet and all the players know this.
In training LVG and the GK coach probably tell De Gea that he is the best GK in the World.

The worry comes when a manager praises a player in public, but doesn't put him in the starting XI.

4 points off the top and 1st in our CL group in November with a favourable run.

Now we are 1 point from the top and next week, have a chance to compete for the top spot.
The league cup is a disappointment, but in the league and CL, we are at or near the top.
In terms of results, he is delivering.

This is basically correct and why I hope the club isn't panicking in either direction on the Van Gaal question. Unless Guardiola is available this summer and wants to come, we should let Van Gaal have his last season but not extend him until we see our football seriously improve or the results be so good as to justify hideous but successful pragmatism.

Lvg has instilled a really solid base to our team. The back 5 and central midfield are top notch. And we seem to be a proper team again with a good mentality. It's just that our attack is still a good way away from where it needs to be. Hopefully that comes soon because I still feel we need a fluid attack to be champions.

He needs to set his players loose a little bit and cut down on the daft substitutions.

I don't think the club will panic. We're not Real Madrid and LVG won't be sacked for playing shit football unless that coincides with terrible results. He will have his 3 seasons as planned though I'll be surprised if we manage to squeeze in a title in that period.

Well we weren't as boring or conservative as we've been in previous game. Which is progress. We were just not very good, which had to be mainly down to the unnecessary change in formation. Still, the points don't lie. You'd have to be happy with where we are in the table. Get out of our CL group and keep on keeping on in the league and Van Gaal's half-term report will be decent.

The Moyes comparison is forced and predominantly stupid. Reading too much into words at a press conference is tedious. The assertion that we haven't spent aggressively is also stupid given the money we've spent and the huge turnover of playing staff over the last eighteen months.

The Fellaini jibe is just a random pop in amongst about five other points. He isn't a serious alternative as a striker here either, contrary the poster's assertion. Van Gaal implied that he could play up top back in the summer, but given he's played there once all season long we can safely say that he isn't perceived to be a genuine centre forward option here.

The Moyes comparison was relevant; he constantly sought the approval of the fans.

Our clear out of attacking options wasn't met with an equal and opposite recruitment drive in the same positions.

The Fellaini reference is relevant to the managerial issue of a lack of striking prowess in the minimalist squad and how Utd as a club shouldn't realistically be relying on him as a striker under any circumstance.

But good luck with leaving a judgemental 4 word comment that has nothing to do with the thread title, very insightful. Cheers for that!

With reference to yesterday's management performance; gung-ho and cavaliar. Herrera gets injured so Rojo comes on and three at the back. I don't think anyone watching the next 70mins really enjoyed it given our early dominance in comparison to the more survivalist latter.
DDG a hero again & an own goal. There seems to be a certain amount of luck that thankfully follows Van Gaal & long may it last, because despite our current position I personally am not fully convinced. That said, I'll be delighted if I'm proved wrong!

Or you know... BFS the hero.

You miserable creature.

It's brilliant. People assume we play crap football while other teams are destroying all of those around them. It must genuinely mystify those people.

Well...although our football isn't the most scintillating, something is happening. You don't get to second in the league by not doing something right. Can't say any team is running away with the award for consistently playing attractive attacking football. Sure some teams do it on the odd game...but no team is to be looked up to in that respect. We are not easy to beat and yesterday at least we saw a bit of the old 'they never give in' attitude which was very pleasing.

Compared to the better teams in the league that's not far wrong. Six teams have scored more goals than us this season. Not everyone finds resolute defending fun to watch.

This season actually feels a lot like Van Gaal's first year at Bayern. They weren't blowing teams away by any means, just grinding every week and eking results out, relying on efficiency and moments of individual excellence in attack rather than cohesive offensive dominance, and being there or thereabouts at the business end of the league season. Their points total wasn't really impressive either - average of ~2 points per fixture, which mirrors United's mark, for a total of 70 points; which is rather pedestrian when compared with 80+ for Dortmund in 2012, and Heyneckes' 91 in 2013 with Bayern. Much of the same in the Champions League - finished 6 points behind Bordeaux of all teams in their group, scoring just 1.5 goals per match, barely scraped past Fiorentina and United; but almost clinched the treble and hit form at the right time.

This United team gives a similar kind of vibe. Not the most attractive team to watch, but defensively stout (much better than Van Gaal's Bayern to be fair), and slyly keeping pace with the front-runners for the league title. Once we build a bit of momentum as some of the starters return, the team could be difficult to stop provided there's no glut of injuries or tactical nightmare like against Arsenal. A lot depends on the others around us, and the teams are certainly stronger than their Bundesliga equivalents from 2010, but there's a sense that we're getting underrated by neutrals and United supporters alike because of the lack of flair, but it's in line with a couple of our most recent League titles where we did score more than this season, but were functional rather than aesthetically pleasing. Especially in 2011 where we had our fair share of really tedious wins and stale draws along the way to the title. Maybe this team can huff and puff its way to the summit again. Consistency will be key though.

Yeah so we're seventh in goals scored but we're only just gelling and with our easier fixtures in the next five ish league games we'll be in the top four/five before long.

I don't understand why van Gaal didn't bring Pereira on when Herrera went off injured.

I'm dreading the return of the 3-5-2 next week :nervous:

I'll admit, I've got an awful feeling he'll do this. It means he can play Memphis more centrally alongside Martial and include all of the other players he likes having in the side.

I think so too. He talked a lot about how the formation suited the attackers and how we were able to position ourselves better, even though anyone with half a brain could see that it wasn't until LVG changed the formation that we lost control of the match. It's crazy how the man sees how he wants to see and is able to spin everything in order to make himself look good.

"I think also this role for Memphis is the best one for him. He played it also in the World Cup for me when Van Persie and Robben were injured so I knew he could do it."

Because he's mental.

So why buy him and play him on the wing, rather then buying an actual winger?:wenger:
