Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Cartel Land: Very Impressive. The way the Mexican cartel hold has been shown is quite excellent. A few gory images so viewers be warned but hard hitting. An Independent American Border patrol's point of view has also been shown. Shows the story of a Mexican Doctor and his organization which has risen in arms against the Drug cartels. A must watch I say. Rating: 8.5/10

Though it was brilliant also, and I saw it on BBC IPlayer I think. (it is still there as well).

You're crazy @Vato.
Seriously though, when was the last time that you've seen that film? I just can't accept that people bash films like Interstellar or Prometheus and praise Brazil. It's just total madness.

Has there ever been a more uninteresting main character in any film ever? I don't think so.

I watch every couple of years I'd say, last watched it last year. Absolutely love the dystopian universe created and the absurdity of most of the situations, a lot of it is very visionary.

I watched Prometheus again this weekend for some baffling reason. I don't think a script that bad has gotten a budget that big in the history of Sci Fi cinema. It's barely even Asylum/SyFy channel level. It quite honestly is that bad. Give me Pryce's 'boring' lead any day over an entire crew of the stupidest professionals ever committed to film.

Wibble will be along in a moment to tell us that Prometheus is better than 2001.

The Harvest.

I was not expect this to be has good as it was, about A couple who keeps their sick son in a secluded environment find their controlled lives challenged by a young girl who moves in next door.
The acting was very good by all the cast. The mother Samantha Morton has a really slow creepy voice, that really adds to the film, she would scare the shit out of me.
You do get the twist in the story quite early, well I did but that does not detract from anything.
It was billed has a Horror thriller, but that is wrong , there is no horror and not even a thriller really, in fact in parts I thought it was very sad.
I would definitely recommend this film.

I agree. Brilliant film that has aged well.

Brazil bland? Are you sure you watched the Terry Gilliam film?

Yes, I thought the pacing was horrible, the character development inexistent with completely uninteresting characters. There's nothing in this film that could keep my attention. In fact I had to see it in about 10 sessions, as I fell asleep in at least half of them.

Also, you said that this film aged well but it really pales in comparison with for example 2001 A Space Odyssey, which is much older.

Yeah it's brilliantly Kafkaesque and all. Suppose not everyone likes absurdism, and that could be the issue.

I love the retro futuristic setting, as well.

Elite Squad

Starring the fella who plays Pablo Escobar in Narcos, it's about the BOPE in Brazil, which are like the incorruptible police SAS types who go after the drug lords in the favelas, with a shoot-to-kill policy, it would appear. It's about the leader of the squad wanting to retire, but needing to train someone up to replace him first. There's two standout candidates: a brave, headstrong lad who's a bit too reckless, and a thoughtful wannabe lawyer, who maybe thinks too much. It's pretty watchable, if a tad predictable.

7/10

13 Sins

Fantastic horror film which, I suppose, draws a fair bit of inspiration from the Saw franchise. A guy who's in financial trouble is offered enough money to clear his debts, pay for his upcoming wedding and sort out his brother's medical bills. He's only ever contacted by phone and has to perform 13 tasks, which start off very trivial, but which become increasingly more sinister.

I'm not going to spoil it any further, but I highly recommend you watch for yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I absolutely love Kafka, and Brazil feels like the best adaptation of Kafka's work, except that it's not his work.

Get Hard: Not sure what I was expecting but I thought the trailer looked good enough so I gave it ago cause I quite like Will Ferrel. Shocking. 4/10

Avengers Age of Ultron: Better than the first Avengers film and a solid end to "phase 2" of the MU. They really fecked up the Jarvis character though and I'm not a fan of Hawkeye's increased involvement. 7/10

The Bucket List
: It has its moments and the 2 Hollywood heavyweights in Nicholson and Freeman combine well. Easy watching on a lazy Sunday but not much more. 6/10

Don't worry Vato, I don't think much of Gilliam's films either (Monty Python aside).

That said, bland is the last word I'd use to describe him.

Always knew you were one of the sane ones, Archie.

Please tell me The Tree Of Life is pretentious cack and express some love for Prometheus.

No? Too much?

I'd take Malick's 'pretentiousness' over Lindelof and co's stupidity every day of the week.
I don't think you have to put his pretentiousness in quotations. Malick is a master director with a back catalogue that's impossible not to admire but he is as pretentious as feck. And he needs someone to tell him judging by To The Wonder and the initial reviews of Knight of Cups.

I was really disappointed with Inside Out, I seem to be in a minority though.
Me too apparently. It was a decent watch and mildly amusing, but nothing special.

It's definitely doesn't touch Wall.E (1st half), UP or Lion King (one of my favourites from childhood).

I put it in quotations cos I don't believe it's pretentious, especially not on his part. It probably comes across as such, because he doesn't respect classic film structure, but I honestly don't think it's pretentious.

I don't rate Wall-E. Just one of those films where everybody loves it but I don't. My rating would be:

1. Toy Story trilogy 9/10
2. Bugs Life 9/10
3. Incredibles 9/10
4. Up 8/10
5. Monsters Inc. 8/10
6. Finding Nemo 8/10
7. Inside out 8/10
8. Wall-E 7/10
9. Ratatouille7/10

Wall-E's first half was wonderful. It became generic animated film after that. But I guess most animated films have those bits.

I still prefer lion king to all of them. I wonder if it would still hold up now.

I preferred Up's opening. Was more hard hitting and relatable.

It's a very good thing you don't pick the movies I should watch.

I don't think even Malicks best mate would deny his head has spent most of the 21st century somewhere up his backside.
