Has Ozil been the leagues best player...

The story at the time was that United was Ozil's preferred option when leaving Real but Moyes turned him down as he felt he didn't need a number 10 because he had Rooney. He then signed Mata a few months later. If true it was a horrendous decision.

Ozil is absolute class. His only flaw is that he plays for Arsenal.

Funny part there is that Fergie wrote about how Rooney demanded we sign Ozil. Maybe we should make Rooney retire but let him be manager?

There is not a forward in world football that wouldn't want to have someone like Ozil playing behind him. He's selfless to a fault.

Ozil, Mahrez, Vardy, Lukaku & Dembele, in no particular order. I think Vardy is last out of the 5, though. Dembele has been far too underrated, as well.

Probabaly not for me. He has been the best big name/big club player though.

Can tell not many people watch Mesut Ozil on this thread if they think Mahrez has been better. Fair enough, Mahrez has been terrific and I'd love a player of his dribbling ability and raw talent in our team.. but Ozil is/has been just a complete different level. I don't know why people comment if they don't watch what they are commenting on.

As for those who quoted my post that he's been in the top 3 players this season.. I'm not sure it's all that big a claim. I didn't say he's one of the best 3 in the world on anything other than form.. which is a fair point given that he is now about 4 games OVER the consecutive assists record. The only players who you could make a case for as having a better season than Ozil in Europe so far are Lewandowski, Muller, Neymar and Suarez. Perhaps Ronaldo. Arguing anything else would be stupid.. so, at worst, he's top 6 in Europe this season (but I still think, like I said, he's top 3 on form).

You could add Iniesta and Busquets to this list of great performers this season. Griezmann has bee good, Zlatan has been in cracking form too.

And the top scorer in Europe Aubameyang. The guy is two goals off 30 and he doesn't even get a mention. Clearly one of the best in the world.

Iniesta's been great offensively, however he's a major factor in them conceding silly goals. Very poor coordination between defence and midfield there.

Maybe there's a role for Rooney as Director of Football. . .

I really think Fergie would have made Ozil one of the world's best. His biggest weakness is also Arsenal's biggest weakness. He isn't very strong mentally. When things start going against his team he's not the one you expect to step up. In one sense he fits in perfectly at Arsenal but the United mentality under Fergie would have been great for him.

Saying that, signing for United under Moyes would have done him no good at all.

True, but he was not even Dortmund´s best performer this season. This would be Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is even more underrated and effectively outscores Özil this season. Even if we take away the Euro League qualifier matches vs. small sides, he assisted more goals in all competitions and scores way more goals by himself.

Özil has been fantastic this season, but top 3 on the planet is still reaching a bit.

How is that exactly ? A real genuine question, Mathieu seemed the main reason for collapse against Valencia for instance.

ESPN had Mkhitaryan with 11 assists all competitions? Do you mean combined goals and assists?

Give over... who are you to say what people have and haven't been watching this season? Or to suggest that a lot of people in this thread don't know what they're talking about?

The level of arrogance in this post is astounding.

He has 14 so far, 10 in the league, 2 each in Euro League and the German Cup. If I include the EL qualifier he has 18. Now, if I add his goals to it he is at 32 in 28 games in total (23 in 24 games without EL qualifier)

Ozil has been oozing class since he returned from injury in January. So glad that Alexis got a short break (even if it was due to injury). Easily the two most dangerous attacking players in the league.

All the sites I'm looking at have him at seven in the league.

So does the official Bundesliga site, so I do stand corrected. Normally the database I use (Transfermarkt) is more accurate than that. Be it as it may, the sheer number of goals Mkhitaryan scored in this season already makes more than up for it and puts him up there with Özil´s Performances, if not even higher.

What has clicked for Mkhitaryan? I remember reading he was underwhelming in his first few seasons (relative to the expectations).

If a player is fouled and the resulting penalty/free kick is scored transfermarkt count it as an assist so that could be why.

Well, for one the chemistry between player and coach is better now. Tuchel probably gets him on a different level than Klopp could.

The bigger reason is that he finally does not stand in his own way anymore. Mkhitaryan is an example of a player that is too smart for his own good (speaks 5 or 6 languages fluently, works on his diploma while playing, formidable chess player) and thought way too much on the pitch.

He has some incredible abilities: extremely good acceleration on the first meters with and without ball, very good eye and understanding for space, tremendous shooting abilities with both feet, strong engine etc., but his decision making was at times extremely erratic, which made him one of the most frustrating players I have ever seen in our shirt. You knew how much he was capable of, but he could not bring it on the pitch consistently.

Although there is little question about Zidane being the overall better, more well-rounded player than Ozil, I think his passing game has never been as good as Ozil's. He is the best passer in the world right now.

Never understood all the stick Dortmund got for the Mkhitaryan transfer, especially from a lot of Bayern supporters. It was always obvious that he could be fantastic, it just didn't work out at the beginning. Also, i have to admit, it was at times quite hilarious watching him. Except for that Real Madrid game, he really could have gotten his shit together that evening. Oh, what could have been. I still hold him accountable for that 0:4 disaster.

Depends on what kind of passing we are talking about. I think Ozil is the best in the world when it comes to delivering the final ball. However in terms of orchestrating the attack or midfield there are better players than him.

Mahrez has 10 goals and 6 assists so far this season, he's been phenomenal for Leicester. It's hardly controversial to believe he's had a better season than Ozil, who has also been fantastic. Ozil has certainly not been on a "complete different level" by any stretch of the imagination, I do not see why you criticised people for allegedly making clearly inaccurate statements before making one yourself.

Mahrez and Vardy. They have a relegation candidate top of the league in December. Take both of them out and their club would struggle to win a game.

I guess you are one of those who think he's been great ever since he's arrived in the PL?

You're entitled to believe Özil has been better, but it's just plain stupid to think only people who don't watch Özil could believe Mahrez has been better. If anything, I think people will have watched more of Özil than Mahrez.

Before his hattrick vs Leicester he was MIA, and then after that game and the next two games (United & Watford) he has again been MIA.
He hasn't affected a lot of PL games this season, he has only scored and assisted in those 3 games too.

Ozil has been streaks ahead of him IMO.

We must be watching differently. The only game I can remember Sanchez being ineffective in was the first leg against Bayern, where they effectively kept him out of the game. Straight choice between Alexis and Mesut, I'd take Sanchez. That's just my opinion though.

True. For me, Messi is overall the best passer.

I think Sanchez is the better player, just don't think he has been great this season. Before the Leicester game many were saying he was still tired from the Copa America etc as an excuse for his under par form.

Yes excuse my pedantry. He's clearly been excellent regardless.

Easily Mahrez. Not even a question.

People criticise Wenger for refusing to pay over the odds for players but when he does splash the cash he comes up with arguably the 2 best buys recently in Ozil and Sanchez.

And Cech for £10m too?

Not bad, eh?

Mahrez has been putting in better numbers playing for a far inferior team. It's reminding me of a 06/07 Ronaldo-esque season from him.

Messi is better. Ozil has probably been the best creative passer this season though with Messi' injury.

Mahrez, Vardy, Ighalo, Ozil, De Gea and Smalling have been the standout performers.

If I had to pick one then Mahrez due to his overall contribution, 11 games, including that worldie vs Chelsea yesterday and 7 assists! Vardy and Ozil run him close though.

Went to the Arsenal vs Zagreb game as a colleague had tickets so I went. Ozil just had that touch of class we expect Mata to have :( his vision and one touch passing is unreal. Mind you it was also the most exciting game I had seen in a while
