Pep Guardiola at City next?

Bizarre interview from Pellegrini hitting the Sunday papers - he would one day like Pep to manage Manchester City. Unusual for him to say anything remotely controversial - a man in the know?
If he's said that, sounds to me like last summer it was all wrapped up. Pellegrini got a contract extension to ensure he gets some payoff, while Girona deal was done to help ensure that Pep was secured for when his Bayern contract expires.

Didn't that Tanc report Pep signed pre-contract with City in June this year?

Feel for him. No matter what he does, he's getting his p45 at the end of the season. His position might become untenable at some point during the campaign.
In many respects it's better he knows his fate than not so - the ideal for us would be to use to CFG network to smooth it over, and give him a position elsewhere after he moves on, but he's long talked about returning to Chile and i suspect that will be on the cards.

It's hard to feel too bad though, he gets paid a lot of money to do what he does; he's got arguably the best squad in the league, and they're currently performing below par. Clearly Pep would be a hugely significant step forward for the club (let's not forget this would be City effectively pinching the Bayern Munich manager, one they'd like to keep, ahead of various other clubs he could walk into) and Pellegrini in his interview seems to recognise that, and says as much.

Wouldn't surprise me if the extension was linked to a point Adisa mentioned, and was put in place to give Pellegrini more credibility this season, and make his position more tenable - if the players knew he was leaving, would they be 100% committed? Just a thought - maybe he's been in the loop the whole time.

I agree. Extension was done pretty early in the summer wasn't it, so that helped quell the Pep rumours for a brief period which could have been a big distraction in the summer with "will Pellegrini be manager or not?"

dunno how reliable these guys are

We learned : #Guardiola leaves FCBayern end of the season and replaced as manager to #ManCity . Guardiola's successor Carlo #Ancelotti

Well if that is true then that is incredibly disappointing. Guardiola will turn City into a brilliant team, unfortunately.

That's what I was thinking back then when the extension was announced. It came all of a sudden, nobody had foreseen this but rumors about Pep to City were in the media every day.

BBC say Pep as confirmed he is leaving at the end of the season.

It's still 50/50 between us and City for me from reading everything so far.

We should go in for Simeone, when he's available. He can bring Griezmann and Koke with him, as a signing-on bonus.

Simeone will go to Chelsea, pep to city, Mourinho to real and we will get giggs

He has but hasn't said where he will be going to.

It'll be interesting to see how he handles that because it is inevitably going to be a featured question at every pressy from here until the end of the season. How much it serves as a distraction to the team & Pep without addressing it will be hard to gauge since Guardiola typically doesn't weigh in publicly on rumours or his future.

You almost get the feeling that it might be better for all involved to announce it sooner than later but then how well can the season continue with not only a lameduck coach but knowing where he will be coaching next. Not a great position to be in for the Bavarian club

I'm pretty sure every question about where he will go next will simply be banned from the game press conferences.

It will be "next question", and that's it. He's done it since summer when questions about his contract came up. This won't be a problem for Bayern at all.

Once you coach United then you can coach city in the future but the chance of an ex-city coach managing United is almost null. I hope Pep takes that into consideration.

I didn't think he'd leave until he won the CL with Bayern.

I don't think United is the be-all and end-all for Guardiola. He's not a United fan/ex-player.

It's possible that his time at Bayern has put him off traditional 'big' clubs. He may now be a lot more open to managing with more freedom and working with people who appreciate having a big-name more.

Maybe he's felt restricted at Bayern?

I'd remove may and maybe and subscribe to your post.

Ahh. In that case, anybody who still believes he'd prefer United over City are very wrong.
If anything, being a traditional 'big' club counts against us.

It makes sense, though. He started to get a degree of freedom at Barcelona, but choose to leave. He would have expected (perhaps naively) that he'd get to that place at Bayern. it hasn't worked out, so he'll be looking for somewhere where he'll be given the freedom to really make the club (not just the team) his own. And City will be all for that.

Indeed it's a bit cowardly.

I would have thought he'd feel unfulfilled to some degree (unless they win it this season). He coasted to domestic trophies but that's hardly impressive.

Of course. But it will be a huge blow for us if he chooses city. And maybe prove once and for all that he only picks the club with the best players.

Why would he choose Utd over City?

He only ever managed teams already dominant in their league with the best squad. So, coming to England, he is clearly going to aim for City above others.

Whereas taking over at over United would be a much tougher task with no chance of immediate success from a distinctly average, by United standards, squad. A Herculean task, a bit like cleaning out the Augean stables.

Anyway, I suspect it's all academic and he has already signed for City.
