Weird how it was only after Thierry Henry's Monday Night comparison between our attack and Pep's Barcelona's that our players have started to play more like the latter.

Wonder if that's the reason for our upturn rather than any particular innovation of Van Gaal's.

I went for Young cause I knew everyone else would go for Martial. I felt sorry for him.
I went for Young because he deserved it. Ran his bloody socks off, owned his man all day and was always dangerous. He gave them a problem which pushed them backwards, hugely important contribution.

Absolutely brilliant.

LvG: "In the first half we played better but didn't score."

He's delusional.

Blinkers are back on for a few idiots. Very lucky to win against the worst Swansea side iv seen in a couple for years.

Them fans leaving at 81 minutes are an absolute disgrace.

"I enjoyed the first half more than the second half but we didn't score" LvG ladies and gentleman.

We need to win ugly or luckily for at least 4 to 5 more marches before we can start thinking about playing "pretty football".

We WON.A.GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually thought we were considerably better against Chelsea but god did we need that win. Great winner, Martial is definitely our biggest spark. If we could get someone with similar pace and trickery in the window then we might actually have an attacking unit worthy of the name.

Still heart attack moments at the back and it was way to close for comfort but we bloody won so I'm happy.

Wow this place is fecking awful nowadays. The team that most people here claims to "support" won a game and most people here are moaning and bitching. This forum is getting unbearably painful to read..

Have had to stay away the last couple weeks and stayed in the non-football sections.
Its all the glory hunters who started supporting United in the 90s and 2000s
A long time ago, in a shit forum very far away, a poster made a list of the differences between fans and supporters. 'Supporters celebrate when the team wins' was one of them.

Good performance but there were moments and perhaps the Swans deserved a point.

Defence got away with it today. Serious issues like being caught square, ball watching, and leaving gaps. Blind always looks vulnerable against a pacey and skilful forward. Smalling has lost some of his composure and is once again making silly mistakes. The question of fullbacks or wing backs seems confused. Martial is not a good defender and it's a waste of his talents having him defending on the flanks in our own half. Why does Darmian give away silly free kicks around the box within extra time?

Not convinced Basti and Morgan play well together. They seem to cancel each other out. The presence of 2 dmf's has not covered the gaps in the defence and not improved our link up play. I think one is enough, not tripping over the other.

Ander and Juan on the other hand work well together, generating movement and chances. Martial is much more important in the box with Rooney. When they attack the ball in the box we score like today. When they play elsewhere we lose focus and become possession minded.

Balance was today's buzzword from LVG - but looked pretty much unbalanced, with confident forwards, and a shaky defence.

We won a game scored 2 good goals which makes me really happy for once. Martial and Young were fantastic and Rooney also got a great goal which can only help his confidence.

Only downside was our defensively frailty but I'd rather be scoring goals and risking it than settling for draws every week.

Also it's amazing what happens when we go wide and create chances... People score goals!!

People are kind of underestimating how massive it is that a team so low in confidence came back from the blow of the Swansea goal and won the game. I genuinely think that a lot of the current issues are about confidence and a couple more wins would be massive for us.

TWO goals in ONE match?! How did we do that? Isn't this against the rules?

Still a long way for Van Gaal to turn things around (IF he is able to do so)

Young is playing far better now than he ever did under Fergie. If he was playing like this back then, he would have been playing more often.

I honestly think its more a case of everyone looking like shite and that any player who can put in a decent cross or beat a defender occasionally is immediately overrated.

Yes his form has improved but I don't think he has even scored a single goal this season. Yet he is our best player?

Its a joke. Highlights how far standards have plummeted. There is a reason he never could get near a first eleven spot in a title winning team.

Shouldn't have had a look at the player performance threads. Very good game today, dominated and conceded from a well scored goal yet I see mostly negative comments. I guess people are probably disappointed that LvG won or something.

We scored when we played with urgency, tempo, getting crosses into the box (and men to the byline) and having more than one person in the box at the end of our crosses.

Not rocket science.

Anyway, a win is a win. Huge especially since they pulled it to 1-1(again). but this time we went and found the winner. Must follow this up with a win against newcastle.

Finally beating them after losing three on the trot against them. Positive is Martial and Young. We need reinforcement especially on the wings and defence.

It's still clear that the players lack confidence in the game plan but a win is always a win, especially after such a long drought. It's also good to see that the experiment with Fellaini in the midfield has been abandoned and we've returned to our tactics from the start of the season which, despite not providing gunh-ho performances, give us enough protection in front of the back four.

The difference today was that we actually manged to get something from the two players who were supposed to create chances in the final third, Rooney and Martial. Great work rate, decent pressing and tracking back, better hold up play and the willingness to make runs, try one twos and run at defenders. And they were both rewarded for their efforts, two brilliant goals and a classy move from Martial to provide an assist.

Young should also be given credit because he showed the kind of urgency, the aggression and the positive thinking that all our players mush have on the pitch in order for the whole team to start playing better. He got an assist too but we really should have someone at FB who would offer more in terms of end product.

Mata also ran his socks off and tried to set up a few one twos but wasn't his day. He provided better possession in the attacking half though. Herrera was decent, Bastian stepped up a gear in the second half and Morgan was always there closing down the first attacker in our half of the pitch. The only problem for the defense was Burrow's pace from the left in the second half (wish we had either Shaw or Rojo) but, fortunately, it didn't cost us.

The question is will we continue getting these types of performances from Rooney and Martial? If the answer is yes, then LvG might have a chance to save the season and his seat. Otherwise we'll look more like Klopp's Liverpool, one good performance followed by two mediocre at best.

Sorry I forgot players and managers don't own televisions.

We were totally clueless in the attacking third until Henry's little demo, then all of a sudden it was like a light flicked on. Do you think they didn't watch it?

I can't help but think if they'd started with the two wingers that came on they would of won.

Boring first half. Very good display until the goal in the second half. Nice to see some proper width and players taking their man on.

He's delusional.

I'd sort of assumed that he would like the first half more than the 2nd. More controlled. The 2nd half was too open for Van Gaal's taste.

That's happened in plenty games this season. It's just Darmian and Rojo haven't been able to make an impact when they've gone forward.

It happened early on when Shaw was fit but it has become more and more conservative as time has gone on. Made even worse when Valencia was injured. Rojo played the role very well in the...CSKA game (I think) and could even have had a few goals but in general we haven't used our fullbacks at all well lately.

Watched L'Pool earlier, they were really lacking in ideas I thought. Hope City lose now. Still buzzing after that Rooney goal. Sublime flick, and great assist by the Martian.

I'm going to say it and risk ridicule but...

I think we're on the verge of being a very good team. I reckon by the end of next month people will be claiming we're playing the best football than at any time since SAF.
I see signs too, but I've seen them before. This team in this league has clicked before on various , but also managed to unclick itself. That's a difference with his former clubs.

No, he's right. I think any objective standard besides 'goal scored' will show the first half was better. It certainly was less entertaining and even annoying at some spells, but you can't expect a manager to judge it by entertainment value.

Yeah, right...

For most of the first half I sat screaming/whining about Martial. He was never in the box when the balls were coming in from the right or when Rooney came deep he would just be standing on the sideline. Second half starts and he is comes in for a cross and we score. So much better when he decided to come in once in a while off the the line.

Overall - again we started quick and then things didn't happen and we fell into the pedestrian pace all around, with and without the ball. Glad we improved a little in the second half

So glad for the win. Hopefully can build upon it.

I'm a little confused, are you saying Louis van Gaal doesn't know how to play possession football, and so it took Henry talking for 5mins for the players to understand how to play possession football?

"I enjoyed the first half more than the second half but we didn't score" LvG ladies and gentleman.

It is important that we dominate possession.
The scoreline - irrelevant.
Possession is everything!!!

Revenge is sweet. Suck on that, you game-raising runts.

First half as usual. 10 min of bite and then the whole team goes missing. The second half, someone would have thought that a couple of players got offended by the half-time boos and decided to run a little. A win due to some individual brilliance rather than a good team display. We are still shide.

We are screaming out for a right winger. Mane?

I think it would make a world of difference to the balance of our team. Not to mention the service to the frontline. Its no surprise Rooney scored today because the service/delivery was there.

I actually enjoyed watching this game which is a start.

Thought the team played with purpose and intent and some of the wing play from Young was top draw. Oddly, it was erratic performances from the midfield trio that put us under pressure, they continually gave the ball away when not under pressure, Herrera was also ineffective.

Best performance in a long time for the front trio who worked really hard; exemplified by Mata and Rooney charging down the Swansea keeper on 88 mins. And great for confidence that both Rooney and Martial both scored strikers goals, which will hopefully get some momentum going. Certainly the players and manager will feel a lot better with a win finally under their belt.

Of course Im annoyed that I have had top readjust my expectations, but we are where we are. We will have to play one game at a time, be fully prepared for every opponent team and fight for every inch. I think we have crossed the lowest point of the ebb and now we will see a dramatic recovery as Spring approaches.

Wise you are!

Cheers:
  • Martial's house hasn't been robbed
  • Young still looks up for it, no matter what he's asked to do
  • 3 points
Jeers:
  • That poor lad, Phil Jones.
  • Where art thou, Bastian?
  • Juan Mata's bald spot...and tiny frame.

Possession is everything!!!

We had 56% of the ball in the first half at home, obviously possession isn't everything.
