Television The Caf' Anime Thread

I don't think I've watched anything that would have been made in the last five years or so besides FMA, what would you guys recommend in that time period?
Which sub-genre do you like the most mate? Almost impossible to rec. any particular anime without knowing that first.

Suspense - Psycho-Pass, Darker than Black, Darker than Black II - Gemini of the Meteor, Steins; Gate, Zankyou no Terror, Parasyte, Elfen Lied.
Action - Shingeki no Kyojin, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, Guilty Crown.
Slice of Life/ Romance - Clannad, Clannad: After Story, Shigatsu wa kimi no Uso, Anohana, Angel Beats!, Eden of the East.
Bishounen/ Ecchi - Ouran High School Host Club.
Fantasy - Puella Magi Madoka Magika, Noragami, Soul Eater.
RPG - Sword Art Online.
Unclassified - Baccano!, Durarara!!, Kekkai Sensen, Mushishi, Kore waZombie Desu ka?.

Well, my favourites off the top of my head are Evangelion, Deathnote, Elfen Lied, FMA Brotherhood. The likes of Code Geass I think are ok. Does that narrow it down?

Stein's Gate is on my list alright..
Going by the favorites list, you should definitely try Shingeki no Kyojin (over hyped, but still really good), Psycho-Pass (top shelf suspense, just below Death Note tier), Darker than Black (Hei aka Chinese Electric Batman, that's all), Darker than Black II - Gemini of the Meteor (more screen-time for Hei), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (watch it for Kamina), Zankyou no Terror (from the director of Cowboy Bebop - not as good, but still one of the most engrossing anime of recent years), Soul Eater (Death + Black★Star

).

PS: None of them are in the NGE or FMA god tier.

Epic Zoro scenes coming up.

Hawkeye is pretty cool. He is no Shanks though.

Totally didn't realise those four knockouts were done in just the first round until Mamoru (think that's his name) called it

ERASED episode 3 is so fecking beautiful. :')

Edit : The ending soundtrack is excellent as well.

Watched the first 3 episodes of ERASED, and hate it with a vengeance.

Have you watched/read it recently?

I noticed after a reread of the manga that some of the funniest scenes are Zoro's. He is genuinely the funniest character in the series with his deadpan delivery and I hadn't noticed until then how hilarious he was.

The last one I read was 805, like maybe in December (or was it November?). Tend to read it in one go every couple of months.

Ah yeah, Zoro's pretty fun and underrated in general. Though within the Strawhats, I love Luffy (for obvious reasons) + Sanji more.

Why? It's great
Just to clarify a bit, it's more of a love/ hate thing. The show itself is excellent (the chemistry between Airi and Satoru is breath-taking, and episode 3 was exceptional - with the whole bullying bit and the tree, very 5 Centimeters per Second-esque), but hate the fact that I'll have to wait for subsequent episodes. Shouldn't have broken the policy of not watching currently airing anime. Now I have the constant urge to devour the manga to sort of cure the itch, and find out what happens next (especially because of the cliff hanger at the end), but that isn't finished either (yet), so I'm stuck in limbo. March 24 can't come soon enough! :(

These are hilarious but even funnier in the manga.

Also, maybe spoilers for people?

I love the ending of Anohana. It has a really nostalgic atmosphere.

Loving the Arlong arc, show keeps getting better.
This is the arc that it really kicks into its best. Once they get into the grandline, the whole anime is amazing. Also, the last couple of arcs before the timeskip are the best anime episodes I have seen.

How is the show after the timeskip? I've only seen till the timeskip after which I started watching other stuff.

It's good, but not as good as the pre-timeskip One Piece (IMO). Apart from Dressrosa (one of the best arcs), and maybe Return to Sabaody; all my favorite arcs are pre-timeskip - Impel Down, Enies Lobby, Alabasta, Marineford, Water 7, Skypeia, Sabaody Archipalego. Don't really like all the fan-service (post-timeskip Nami and Robin), the Straw Hats are somewhat splintered now and there's not a lot of character development (again, apart from Dressrosa), not a lot of tension or world building like the Enies Lobby/ Skypeia days, some pacing issues. The manga is still really good because of Oda, but Toei messed up chunks of the anime. The decline in quality is nowhere near as a severe as Shippuden, but you do kinda miss the old Straw Hats from time to time.

Me and my mate are 5 episodes into Death Note, and he said something that surprised me while we were discussing it; he's rooting for Light instead of L. Is that common with viewers?

(please don't spoiler past this point in the show, thanks)

Some people just want to see the world burn.

Just started Usagi Drop, it's great.

I was Team Light all the way.

Yes. Light was great.

I rooted slightly for L, but at the same time didn't want Light to win. Liked both of them pretty much equally.

I'm 9 episodes in now and I'm surprised so many people rooted for Light. He's a little shit.

I also rooted for Light but I was reading the manga and also read before the manga the one-shot.

Though I didn't enjoy the manga as it went on as much I liked the beginning.

I rooted for light as well. He was an evil genius! The scene with Ray Penbourns wife was just masterfully brutal!

I agree with people saying he's a great character, and brilliant as well. (yeah that scene with Penbourn's fiance was pretty good) But wanting him to win? He straight murdered people just because they were convicted or suspected, and then murdered those trying to stop him. I dunno, to me it would be like rooting for Joker because he's smart and charismatic etc.

Although, I am curious to see how he wins. Because I'm now 99% sure L will die lol.

Light is a cool guy. You get to know him more then you know L and you find his evilness makes him endearing. Although, he did try and do good with the book in his own way.

I thought he turned heel when he killed the fake L on tv lol
