Jose Mourinho- Next destination?

Utd kissing a lot of frogs to find their prince right now. A frog's a frog. Give Mourinho a go (if Guardiola is a no show).

Fair enough.

But it should be noted that Giggs was carefully studying Ferguson in his last 3-4 years, perhaps longer, before Ferguson retired.

Whatever Ferguson did in terms of "different training drills", "different ideas on tactics", man management, etc., were of course vastly more successful than anything Moyes and LVG have done. Anyone who seeks a role model for how to manage United should seek Ferguson, not Moyes or Van Gaal.

If anything, you're right but for the wrong reason: the lessons that Moyes and LVG taught Giggs should be viewed as what not to do. I'm in the camp that views our play under Moyes/LVG as having been dreadful, boring and extremely disappointing. Had we known how plodding LVG would have set us to play we would never have supported his appointment. No neutral observer argues that Moyes and Van Gaal have done a brilliant job of molding a squad that plays intelligent, attacking football or even one that just consistently generates grinding wins. I can't imagine that you would disagree with that.

I don't want to be too hard on Moyes and Van Gaal. The former was simply not up to the job and the latter seems to have lost the will to be a tactical innovator. His tactics suffocate players who want to play attacking football. This isn't news to anyone here, but LVG's tactics, his philosophy, simply are out of step in a league that rewards the brave and out of step with United's best traditions. Our tactics are too predictable and too easy to counter. His approach is overly cautious, almost negative, and is designed not to lose a game before his players attempt to win it. Caution is a virtue, but an excess of caution is a vice. And we've paid for that excess of caution with repeatedly woeful performances for 18 months that have been papered over by a brilliant goalkeeper. As for man management, where is the evidence of LVG's brilliance? We've known for at least a year of player unrest. Scorn for our plodding play is a daily talking point around the world. There are lessons to be learned from LVG, some good and some bad, but after spending 20+ years under Ferguson there isn't much Giggs could have learned from Moyes and LVG in the last two seasons that would be of much use to him as a manager someday.

We're at serious risk that we will not qualify for the CL next season. And if we do, it will be by the proverbial skin of our teeth. There's not a whole Giggs could have learned from LVG this season regarding how to get the best of this squad.
Im completely with you in this. To be honest I dont think Giggs should be our next manager.

Agreed. Ryan Giggs is a United legend second to none. Well, second to Best IMHO. But I'm not sold on his fitness to manage United yet, at least not until he's managed another club and achieved some success with it. Going from player to assistant manager straight to manager is just too risky.

I thought his team with Robben and Duff on the wings was pretty good to watch.
No doubt about it. Particularly in the first half of the season they won their first premiership, they played football just as great to watch as anything that Utd or Arsenal have during the premiership years. I hated to admit it since they were beating us to the title, but I loved sitting down and just watching them at that time.

Of course, it's also true that he slowly got them playing more and more defensively.

Also agree. No disrespect to Giggs but he really needs to prove his worth. I don't know why big name players think they're too big to start off with smaller clubs in management. I'm not saying that this is Giggs' mentality but there's been loads of opportunities in the lower leagues where he's had the chance to put is management skills to practice. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, for example, earned his move to QPR and deserves the chance to prove himself at a higher level. We'll just see how that pans out. Alan Smith is having a go with Notts County and now Kevin Nolan has taken on the Orient job. Strange choice but at least he has the opportunity to show what he can do now. I don't see chemistry or dynamism with Giggs and van Gaal and seriously wonder just what he is learning under him. He always looks as if he is biting his lip or holding his own counsel, but I could be wrong. Giggs needs to leave for his own progression. He's got plenty of years ahead of him and would always be welcome back at United once he's padded out his CV a bit on the managerial side.

But in relation to Mourinho, I think he's holding out for United or a return to Madrid. I don't think he'd go back to Italy and France wouldn't be much of a challenge unless he was going to try and get Monaco or something challenging PSG? The only other option would be the Portugal national team but not really hands on enough for someone like him?

If we announced that Mourinho was taking over at the end of the season like City have done with Guardiola, would you consider that a wise move or a bad one?

I get a small feeling we may have an agreement in place already, but will wait until May to announce anything

A bad move as it would seem like it's a "response" to City signing Pep. I hope we do get him in the summer though.

I can see him going to Inter.

Fulfill his promise to Moratti. Mancini proving to be a failure there after all the money spent.

Moratti doesn't run Inter anymore.

I don't know how you think Mancini is a failure. Inter were in bad shape when he arrived.

Its obvious, he will be United manager

I don't see it that way, I don't think he's our top choice, I reckon Pep was and the board is divided on Mourinho. If LvG gets top four then he will stay, spend big and Giggs takes over after.

Put yourself in the boards shoes for a minute, you see the fans moaning about the football and how boring it is, would that not give you second thoughts on hiring Mourinho?

FWIW, I want Mourinho.

Thohir does, I know. But Moratti still has significant influence there.

They have spent large sums this year, and they looked like they'd really challenge for trophies. Have fallen off incredibly, and lost to a rather poor Milan 3-0 just last week.

The last time Inter got rid of Mancini for Mourinho they were in a much better position and still got rid. I dont think thet'd hestitate if Jose was available again. He's a cult figure there.
