Carrick's Last Game?

The club aren't selling Bastian after a season. And they will give another season to see if he can get over his injury problems.

We can't keep both. We need to be more proactive and sign a younger midfielder now.

Why can't we keep both and sign a young midfielder too?

We're such a poorly run club when it comes to on the field matters

Not sure Jose would want him given his preference for his midfield to have strong runners. Such a shame that he is going out as a footnote like many of our players after SAF left.

I think club has a 1 year extension option on his contract. Could be they are holding off a decision for whoever is manager after next Saturday.

We should be keeping him though, even if we are in market for a new centre midfield (again).

Carrick really doesn't have much to offer on the pitch any longer. He's too slow, he can't play deep by himself, and the tactics the last couple of seasons have left him exposed.

Time to move on, for both player and club.

We don't need all three.

I don't see the need to keep Carrick for a bit part role.

I think that's what the club has decided too.

Players dont need to reach Rio level of bad before we move them on.

Carrick isn't "Rio level of bad". He can still play a key role off the bench and is an influential member of the dressing room.

We need to have experienced players

Would be madness not to give him a new deal

Yup he needs to move, not because he isn't good enough but his current ability and experience are more a hindrance to the development of other players.

I.e He's 'good' enough to start and take the position of any other of our midfielders based on this season's performances but does that warrant indirectly limited the chances and potential of your Herraras/Schneiderlin and Schweini? Nope, nope and nope.

It's a bit like when Henry moved, the season after that Arsenal team challenged even stronger for the title (and lost it again) or when Rio left and that gave Smalling a chance. In a perfect world, we should be holding onto our experienced players and then bleed in others but that's doesn't and hasn't happened at all (hence Giggs, Scholes and now Carrick playing longer/more than they should have). Short term pain, long term gain.

Can't see us not renewing with him.. He played every game and no one in the squad can touch him.. But if he leaves he surely deserves a huge send off. Our best midfielder for the last decade.
Paul Scholes?

Been a great player for us no doubt. Might get a contract, if not, will be remembered.

He should go while we still have good memories. United should not be fielding 35yr old midfielders.. one of the major reasons we are so pedestrian is likes of Carrick and Rooney. Carrick is good enough for this side but not good enough for where we want to be.

He should have been replaced 2 years ago he is OK when not under pressure and for is height has little to offer from set pieces offensively and defensively. Has been found it by teams who push someone on to him he will offload and cause someone a problem. He was OK when he had great players around him to help him but never stood up to be a leader or inspiration.

Great player for us and all that but let us not kid ourselves, he's simply not good enough anymore as a starter anyway. If he wants to stick around as a bench player i wouldn't mind him staying.

Has been an excellent player for us (and a woeful vice Capt, but thats for another thread) but time is up. Thanks for everything MC but bye bye.

I don't think he's the type that will vocally provide his experience to the team anyway.

As I don't really care about our wage expenditure I'd keep him on another year but I'm sure Blind could offer us similar services if we do get rid now.

Blind, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Rooney, TFM + one new signing should be enough cover.

Great servant though and a very important player to us in our last great team.

I didnt say he was. I said that he shouldnt be kept until he reaches that level. Rio should probably have left the season Fergie left too.It was a shame to see how he turned out.

Well he's still playing in a manner that adds value, so we should keep him, even if it is off the bench. Our wage bill has more than enough headroom.

How do people rate Carrick looking back on his career with us? Very good but not great as a player for me - pretty consistent performer (although he has had his bad patches as well) - I don't see him quite on the level of Rio, Vidic, Ronaldo, Keane, Giggs, Scholes, Cantona, etc though

Yep.

High quality but not at the level of those mentioned.

Then maybe we should compare with the likes of Beckham, Butt, Ole, Rooney, Feltcher.

We should keep him another year, his wages are justifiable, and could still offer us something for 15-20 outings next year, but knowing us we'll cast him aside and buy some donkey for huge money, well, no... we'll buy a good player... whom LvG will turn into a donkey.

Not a stand out of course in terms of ability and dictatorship, but in his prime it was fairly evident what his composure and reading of the game brought to us and how well he steadied the ship for us in that role. A few years back, The time he was injured at the start of the season you could see how poor we were without him. To an extent what it still can do. Similar to when Fletch was in his prime for us before his unfortunate illness. Brilliant for us.

But back onto the topic, we can't rely on him as a first choice midfielder now - he's just too old and too injury prone to play every game. But maybe as a squad player in the way we used the ageing Scholes and Giggs he could still be useful

Most people would agree one of the big problems weve had this season is our squad has been exposed as too thin. Obviously this is something we need to resolve by buying more players. But I dont think letting one of our most experienced - and still one of our best - midfielders go at the same time is going to help with that problem. We need to be adding names, not clearing more people out. He will only be used sparingly but when he is called on will be worth his salary. This isnt about setting an example to the kids or inspiration or teaching incoming players what it means to play for United or any of that intangible stuff, its about the fact he is still a quality player.

The lack of CM's hasn't been the issue, we are thin up top and at CB but we have plenty of CM's, the problem is that two of them are too old and immobile with injury issues, and the others aren't good enough.

Carrick has been arguably our best midfielder this season, as he has many seasons. Obviously that is a problem. But the solution to it isnt to get rid of him. Obviously it would be different if Schweinsteiger had more to offer, but he doesnt. I think Schneiderlin will be better next season as well, which will probably mean Carrick is less important, but he is still a good insurance policy to have, Id definitely give him an extension.

At the end of the day I trust Mourinho in this (assuming of course he comes in), if Mourinho doesnt see the need to keep him Id be fine with that, my expectation would be he'll want to have him around.
