I very much doubt that in 1998, let alone any year, that any City fan thought they were "bigger" than Barcelona.

Because it seemed he was referencing the derogatory term often used to insult the entire Arab population, not just "slavers and civil rights abusers".

I suppose he could've used the same line when talking about Arsenal, considering the part of the world your main sponsor is from and the fact that the person that runs Emirates is related to City's owner - would you have been so accepting of it then?

For the record, I personally wasn't particularly offended - i just noticed he was banned shortly afterwards and was asking whether it was worth saying it in the first place.

It's not racist as religion and culture does not equal race. I would say it's a bit distasteful, even if you think you can excuse it with their behavior. Now if you would excuse me, I'm gonna listen to Sean Connery pronounce City.

Big rumours round these parts that Bryan Briggs is about to be announced as head coach at Nottm Forest.

Real shame his first job wasn't the United one... He's got zero chance of getting it now.

Would have loved to see someone worse than Moyes & Van Gaal push them further into the shit....

It refers to a time when United were poor, the kits apparently looked pretty shoddy at that time and so United (not 100% sure on that) fans came up with the rags thing.

There does appear to be a story about a very bitter City fan out there as well, who was asked to make the United kits for the 1968 European cup final against Benfica and used rag cloth.
 
For some reason I thought it had summat to do with women's monthly stuff. Am I mental or has this been a thing before?

Most Blues aren't that arsed about who's the biggest, got the most, done it for longer than anyone else. We leave that to others.

According to the interwebs, it appears that it is either from United being poor in the 1930s or from United being homeless after the Germans bombed OT in WWII.

Maybe one or two of the JCL's are but most are too busy moaning about internal stuff. If the United and Liverpool plastics (not the true fans BTW) start their usual parroting about most titles, European Cups, worldwide fans, small club who won the lottery routine then we will defend ourselves using whatever weapons come to hand.
It looks like we'll be closing the gap in the next few years. We know full well that we'll never overhaul you in any major category in my lifetime but it's good to have our time in the sun and all the old stats that were used to prove the massiveness of the world's greatest club® are no longer enough to placate you.

It's nothing to do with the war but don't let that stop you believing the worst about City.
There was a time when United were somewhat cash strapped and City donated some second hand kit to help them out. The kit was a bit threadbare and that's why the lighthearted jibe stuck.

What I find so funny is that most of the Blues that give me shit do so since I am not born in Manchester, and therefore can not be a "true" fan. But what you are aspiring to be, a global "massive" club, will achieve just the same, a lot of fans from a lot of different countries. Not necessarily just Jim from the pub around the corner.
