I think there's a big difference between signing a class player for 30 or 40 million to fix your midfield, and spending 100m on one. I agree with the prevailing idea that "it's not my money" and if a player improves the team then I'm all for it, but once you get into those sorts of eye-watering figures (and also adding on wages and agent fees) you're reaching a level that could actively affect other player purchases, so you better be sure you're signing the right player.
I'm not totally sold on Pogba, he seems to blow hot and cold too much considering the above. I'd hope Jose can mould a world class player out of him though.

If we seriously had £120m available surely we could buy 3 (Ooops, forgot, it's the Premier League … 2) quality players of say … Dier and Payet quality?
I am enjoying all of the salty bitter tears from Serie A and BPL fans towards the EPL.

Pogba's a great prospect when you've already got a functioning team. France should be an example of what happens when you don't, and we don't.

You didn't take into account the statement signing significance in this case. Real Madrid pre first Galaticos while still had a great pulling power, not as strong as Italian clubs. Despite the underwhelming result after Del Bosque departure with the Galaticos project. Real Madrid changed the landmark in transfer market Robben, Van der Vaart, Huntelaar, Sneijder, Varane, Kroos, Di Maria, Benzema, Ronaldo, Kaka, James Rodriguez,... all expressed a desire to wear the shirt over other (more reasonable/ better for their career) choices.
Barcelona also enjoys similar status. Bayern has monopoly in Germany market. We're losing pulling power over the year with plastic clubs then TV deal money pouring into PL over the year. We desperately need one of these real marquee signing.

He's not worth the £100 million. That's just what it will take to get him because we don't have to sell him and don't want to lose him so if someone wants to pay that then great for us.

Most PL fans in the world are not English.
PL is in a totally different league (literally) to Serie A \ BL when it comes to gathering interest, finances and attracting players. Instead of being sour over it the respective leagues should try and copy the PL's modus operandi since it obviously is miles ahead of others.
The only one who can compete to some degree is the Spanish league, and that is simply due to the quality of their top teams being so ridiculously high that they generate interest, also it is starting to be more competitive.

That would be just about the only way I could see Pogba and his side agreeing to the move here - in the hope of following the Ronaldo route to Madrid (with higher wages admittedly), but the question is will Real want him immediately this summer, rather than wait a few years to buy him further into his prime for probably a lower fee than Juve are asking for now?
My guess is that Real and Juventus will end-up agreeing a lower fee than the one we'd agree to, and Pogba becomes a galactico this summer.

Looks like Raiola did what was best for his client which was getting him game time where he wouldn't get it at United.
Sir Alex and Sir Bobby didn't want Mourinho as our manager either yet here we are. We can't run the club to their whims.

I posted in the match game, that I am suspecting Kante is actually the incompatible part. Kante may play badly individually, but his style invaded both Pogba and Matuidi space. Both seem to play better after Kante is subbed. Larsana Diarra has a better chemistry with Pogba and Matuidi. I maintained in few thread that Kante is very much untested in the anchor role despite of people wank over his all action, 1 vs 1 prowess vs lesser attacker.

How do people know that had he have given into Pogba's wage demands other players wouldn't have followed suit and demanded ludicrous wages before they deserved it, maybe standing upto Pogba and his agent made other young players sit up and take notice and step into line.

No because we are loaded and have a lack of quality players. I'd like to see us sign 2 blue chip players (Ibra & ?) and 1 more solid buy (Kante) and 1 more with potential (ala Martial Shaw or Memphis type).
We're having not so great potential since SAF last few years. So this can be 2 birds one stone signing. If possible, why not?
I agree with your post for most part. But with hindsight and at that time, it was predictable that the market would come this way. We should have made use of our financial power back then when it's still cheaper and has more value.
Bayern tried the same with Kroos and backfired with Kroos left and still had to pay big wage for their players. We did with Januzaj and arguably wasted time and money the last 3 years going backward no circle. SAF could have used that money better himself and left a more quality squad!
