Obviously, but we were always going to do that - CL or no CL.

This is just a response to the amount of posters that said no CL football would definitely mean that we couldn't sign the so called "top class" players... though the irony I suppose is that I don't think Pogba is top class yet.

Have to agree. That's madness. But that's the market. And also 100m is many fewer euros today than it was last week, so call it 80m.
 
100m is quite a sum however I wouldn't be too concerned if we spend that much for him

a- he's a magnificent player with all the characteristics to make it in the EPL. He's strong, his technically gifted, he's hardworking and he's a quite intelligent player

b- he's young. At age 23 he can give us a decade of good football

c- he knows Manchester and our team well enough. He won't suffer from homesickness

d- he's a world class talent who would qualify as homegrown talent. That's a rare mix these days

I agree, also i think he is the type who will get itchy feet in a couple of years for a move to Real/Barca.

I say let Madrid buy him and we take Kroos off them.
 
He's 23 years old so we can't expect the polished product but if the team play through him, then he can be more influential. It's just about finding the right position for him and demanding the right things. People say he's not worth it but it would give the dressing room a big boost. It would inspire people like every transfer does. Martial proved himself in the minds of most, after coming on against Liverpool. France has great kids coming through - if we have Pogba and Martial ...and if we have Germany's Captain....we should be using them to exploit their markets. So it's not just paying 100m or whatever for a player....it changes the climate of things. Teams see you signing Pogba and it attracts other players. Bale plays for Madrid because he's a glory hunter. He was seduced by their ego driven spending when he was growing up - do they care? Not really. But United cannot allow Madrid to nab the best of British.

Some people want Kante? We probably should have went for him to replace Carrick. It's not we spend all our money on pogba and have nothing left....I think the Ramos sitation and other issues reflected poorly on the club. Why should a top player commit to you, when you won't commit to paying what it takes?...So if we have to pay that kind of money? It's because we dropped the ball and are determined to not drop the ball again. So next years lets play properly, quality for the CL and get back to where we belong.
 
If the player can be convinced I actually believe this will happen. Woodie has been dying to smash the world transfer record for years now.

I dont give a feck about the fee, because within 4 years he will "have a dream, which only God knows" and start campaigning for Real Madrid, who gladly will give us the full fee + a bonus + inflation for him.

But we must be absolutely certain the fecker never has less than two years minimum left on his contract at any given stage though, considering who his agent is.
 
Just don´t care what we pay for him.. If he is the player Mou wants just go and get him. If he goes to Real just buy Kroos for 50 instead. Win win..
 
We could buy Modric and Kroos for that sum.
I don't have any problem with the fee, it's just that I don't think he will ever reach Modric's level for instance.
 
If we pay £100m then it's because we can afford it, and because Mourinho really, really wants him. Will he improve the team? Undoubtedly. Therefore what reason do I have to care about the cost? Answer is I don't. If it takes £100m then so be it. I want to see my club competing for honours again and buying the best players.

Well if he was Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo type then it's non issue as the marketability will cover the difference. For example I'd have no issue with us paying 120m for Neymar or even more. From pure marketing point he for example is worth it.

I'm not sure Pogba has the same marketing pull which makes you wonder whether ability wise he warrants a world record fee.

Most probably for that fee we can get James/Kante with money to spare, to fill 2 positions we need.

He'll probably be in the last year of his contract at that point though.

But yeah, we make an absurd amount of money, who really gives a flying feck on how we spend it.
 
We should wait a year and throw the money at the next Suarez, Ronaldo, Neymar or Bale that comes through. There's usually around one of these players emerging every season. I don't think Pogba would make a 100m pound difference, and I can see him kicking up a fuss in the near future.

That is why he must be tied down to a new 4+1 year deal as soon as he is 2 years or so into his existing contract. A huge pay increase + some lube for Raviola will take care of that. That dodgy lardass Raviola must also be guaranteed that he never will see a penny again from MUFC if he tries to pull a freebie on Pogba from MUFC to RM.

A player is a financial asset, and no way in hell will the club not secure their investment when it comes to a £100m asset.
 
192k for wages is actually not that bad. I thought it would be north of 200k.

United got dough in buckets pal, if a player like that was available, money wouldn't be the factor to determine whether or not he joined us. Besides, Barca etc. seem to have first dibs on those emerging WC talents anyway.

Our Adidas deal could be slashed by 30% if we miss out on CL football again (22.5m)

It's a big fee, but I'd be all for it. At his age, he is only going to improve.

The only way we will get Pogba is if his agents promises to move him onto to Madrid in 2/3 years time.

That's how he works and it represents our best opportunity to get him.

Yes, but for these sums involved I am sure that we can convince Raiola that moving to Madrid in 2-3 years time will include our original fee recouped + inflation.

RM and that clown Perez will be dying to get the transfer record back in 2-3 years time anyways, the silly cnuts.
 
Surely we can spend the 100m on several players and improve the team. Rather than signing just one for that fee? I mean there's only so much Pogba would do in terms of improving us?

I think it's as much a statement as it is about improving our team. Woody does seem to want to show the world our financial muscle and prove that all of our sponsors aren't just for show.

I actually care about how much we spend, and 100m for Pogba is insane. As you mentioned, for that amount of money you buy 2 class players who will improve us as well. Pogba alone wont solve our problems and is overrated

In today's game I think it's also an important statement.


People bitch and moan about Madrid and Barcelona being so attractive to the stars while we take rejects. Well if we want to get into that bracket again we have to start signing these players and that means spending money.

Pogba isn't a 28 year old who has done it all, he's a young player on the cusp of greatness who can realise it with us.

Why, though?

Given the state of the market, the team we're (assuming the rumours are true) dealing with, the hype surrounding the player, his age, 100 million isn't too much over priced.

@Pexbo is completely right. If he were going to Madrid or Barcelona at that fee, we would be lambasting Woodward for our lack of interest and unwillingness to spend big. You really cannot win sometimes.

there's a difference between being a defensive manager and being a manager who knows hot to train his team to defend or expects them to have defensive responsibilities. We can't have players swanning about being fancy dans and expect other colleagues to do the hard work for them. Also, the facts suggest that the number of goals his teams scored in every season he has managed has been nothing short of staggering, hardly enough evidence to label him a defensive manager.

also about Pogba, No player has won possession in the defensive third more times at Euro 2016 which is not bad considering hes being asked to do a different role for his Nation.

Exactly. If we are to be considered as one of the top clubs again we need to make such statements. If Pogba fulfils his potential and finds the consistency many accuse him of lacking he will be fantastic (not that he is not already a great player who is better than most midfielders in the league let alone those currently at our club). I am also getting tired of the defeatist attitude of those who are already mentioning that if we sign him we can recoup the price in 4-5 years if/when we sell him on due to his age. For me, we have made one statement in our ability to retain De Gea, we should not presume that if Real or Barca come calling in 4 years we will be forced to sell any player on simply because of Ronaldo (Dream of Real), Beckham (Fall out with Fergie), Ruud (Team rebuild meant he was surplus) who left for different reasons.

I'm all for signing Pogba, bring our boy home. He may not solve all our problems but he solves one problem in midfield, if we need another midfielder to partner him then I'm sure the club and Jose can judge that.

I would agree with that. £40m on Kroos and £20m on Kante would represent significantly better value and balance in the side without smashing transfer records and wage structures.
 
Have chairs been broken yet? It's 12.30pm and I expect at least 2 to have been smashed by this point!

I think the reason Pogba would be worth more than say a Kroos or Kante, is more due to his commercial abilities combined with his sporting abilities. His name and "brand" will bring in far more money than a Kroos or Kante (who funnily enough may be equal or better than him on the field). His age is also far younger than Kroos and offers you nearly 10 years of service if you can convince him to stay, and if he leaves he will attract a major sell on fee.

Funny to think we supposedly passed on Kroos and Fabregas for a combined 60m and had Pogba running around in our back yard...now thats a serviceable little midfield.
 
I think what comes out of the meeting today will be very interesting regarding Juventus' stance and where they stand.
