It's madness really. Zidane is smart because he knows buying pogba and giving him the contract he desires will upset the likes of modric and kross who are defintely not earning 200,000+.
I do believe pogba might end up here but my biggest concern is the fear of dimaria part 2. Dimaria really disrespected this club the way he left. Also sold him for much less than we bought him. Pogba might do the same given he has a twat of an agent.
Was confident we were in with a chance earlier on with Di Marzio and other reliable Journos coming out. Not as confident anymore with us being linked to other midfielders and the rumours becoming less prominent. Don't see it happening.
I hope we have a back up plan, we never seem to do with the huge transfers that don't come off.

I'm struggling to think of how you accommodate Pogba, Mkhitaryan, and Rooney in the same midfield when they all play in the same area (#10ish). You know Rooney ain't getting benched as the face of the club, the captain, and after José has coveted him for so long. That means he has to play in midfield, yes? If he and Pogba are in the middle of the pitch, who's doing the leg work as the DM? Seems like top teams could have their way with that pairing.
That leaves Fellaini, Herrera, Schweiny, Blind, and Schneiderlin. Are a couple of them simply never going to play?

Sorry if I'm lagging behind a bit but it's rare to read such a sensible post on this thread. Couldn't agree more. And would like to add that the likes of Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo et al would probably all cost closer to €200m. Half that for Pogba seems within the boundaries of normality to me.
I can see mourinho using Rooney in an even deeper role and as part of a double pivot with Pogba in front of them.

And doesn't that worry you? Two older, slow, highly declined players in Rooney and Carrick in the middle of the pitch.
I wouldn't mind Carrick if he was protected by Pogba and Schneiderlin/Herrera in midfield. I think Carrick although declined is still more serviceable than Rooney.
But yes I don't want Rooney to play in midfield. If it was up to me, I'd not play him at all honestly. I just think he's done.
How Mourinho handles the Rooney situation will probably make or break his 1st season(and possibly his tenure).
This season Müller, Bale, Neymar, etc...it is not happening people. Let just accept our midfield general Wayne Rooney and hope we can perform well around that. Rooney did well towards the end of last season, so he may continue upon those performance.
I don't personally see him playing Rooney and Carrick together. I think he'll use Rooney as the dictator from deep with a Schniderlin type sat next to him. Rooney still gets around the pitch quite well and as we know he will be playing for a while at least I see this as the best position for him.
Just a question but why do people feel that the manager who dropped hazard, Costa etc will feel the need to constantly play Rooney if he isn't performing? Is it just because LVG and Moyes did?
Hazard was dropped for maybe a game or a half once or twice. Costa I can't recall ever being dropped purely due to form. Completely different to Rooney who is your talisman, captain, highest earner, and close to becoming your all-time leading scorer.
Not to mention he's your marketing poster boy and most famous player. Would be a bit starnge to have him on the bench.

This is a weird one because unlike other potential muppet signings that ended in heartbreak and depression (Thiago, Sneijder, Ozil etc), I won't feel sad at all. I'm impartial on this because if he chooses Madrid, I have a feeling Jose will bring in a top notch midfielder anyway (Kroos or Kante). I don't get the sense that its Pogba or bust for the club.
I'm at the stage where I'm tempted to say feck Pogba. You wait for Madrid and see if they will ever match Juve's valuation. If you're lucky they may put a bid in when your contract runs down but you only signed that contract last year.

Throw John Terry in there aswell if you like. Zlatan will be the clubs shiny new toy to parade around for marketing reasons. Plus we've just got the most marketable manager on the planet. Marketing reasons for playing Rooney are quickly diminishing. Mourinho will drop anyone he doesn't feel are contributing to the cause enough.

Only a newb here, but for me it's all about getting extremely competitive again. In my humble opinion it was not that long ago United were in champions league semis, winning the league etc. In this world where Byern gets every German and others and Barca and Real suck every other top player up, we have to do some stupid shite like risk paying a bazillion euros for Pogba, then get Matuidi(sp?) as well or whoever.....

And it worked really well. They went round 25 games unbeaten or something silly like that. Replace James with Pogba and you can kind of try replicate it. But Casemiro was one of Madrid best players in the second half of last season and gave them balance, so is it worth the risk? Alternatively, they can sell Modric because he will be 31 next season and this is probably the last time they can get any decent money for him. Sales of Modric + James + Morata = more than enough money to fund the Pogba transfer and some change.
I'm talking about week in and week out here with Rooney. The players you named were maybe dropped here and there. Matic wasn't dropped by Mou if I recall correctly. It was only after Guus came in that Mikel was preferred. Oscar was injured not dropped. Hazard was dropped for maybe a half or 70 minutes or something. Terry was straight back in the team when fit. The only player that was actually dropped by Mou was Cahill.
When I ask about Rooney, I'm questioning whether José will keep Rooney out of the side. As in use him as a squad player. That I just can't see.
I think he'll still be a nailed on, first choice player. Any of you who think he'll drop Rooney for an extended period are in for a surprise. I can foresee a lot of "why won't José drop Rooney?!" and "Rooney won't be dropped because José loves him" posts here this season.
That team didn't work too well, especially for Bale. They never struck a perfect balance. Bale was also used in a more central role with James swapped to right wing. Isco to right wing. Isco in #10 Modric in #10...
Casemiro brought the balance. Would throw them in same mess removing Casemiro to add Pogba. They would need to sacrifice either Modric or Kroos. Modric won't get a high price due to his age.
The problem with your stats is that it's without context. They did Okay, but unconvincing considering the quality of their team on paper vs their opponent. Compare Real to Barcelona, the performance is a world apart, that's unacceptable considering the investment they put into this. In key games later on, the problem in the balance showed.
It's like with LVG first season where we on the run of winning streak. It masked the performance using the stats alone without context. IIRC Someone pointed out if cut a certain portion LVG first season, result wise, we had streak that's closely matched that of Chelsea's the champion that season.

How much do you think modrić would go for? I'd wager at around the 40 million mark if not higher.
Madrid could easily wait another year, then Pogba just has two years left on his contract at Juve and he'll be 25 with a year left. Seems like Pogba and his agent price themselves out each year. Pogba should be earning treble or quadruple the wages he's on now.

Pogba is on 4.5 million euros after tax, there is no team that'll triple or quadruple his wages.

You do know some players are already on around 260k or more a week right? United have paid Falcao 260k a week. We pay Rooney 300k a week.
Pogba's wages are going to be around 230k-260k

72 x 4 is 288
You don't think any club can't treble his wages? Plenty can, 216k a week is not much.
