You must be joking here. Giggs is more local. When football is mentioned here, Zidane's name comes up pretty often, he's a global star. I don't really hear people outside of UK talking about Giggs, unless it comes from a Man Utd fan, or the discussion is centered around Man Utd and even then people usually talk about Beckham, Rooney, etc.

I disagree, this is the best chance in a long time we have had to sign a world class marquee player.
We have the money, the manager and the position to play him in. Not to mention a great relationship with his agent after just signing 2 of his clients.
Woodward and co have been itching for years to break the world transfer record on someone and this is it. I think we are on pole position to sign Pogba and my money is on us getting him.
The crazy thing is that I think united is trying for Pogba, but they know it has a high chance of failing so they're probably also thinking of other options, of which Matuidi. Mourinho is not necessarily a big name manager. When he took Drogba from Marseille, nobody thought he would become that player. He can take Matuidi and transform him to a beast. Or he does the same with Paul, who knows... Ah I so much hope that Paul becomes the exception to the rule and comes here. It's all up to Raiola now.

Its all about exposure. More fans know about Carrick than Keane for example.
It's not as if fans nowadays go back and watch those games, i've had more than one argument v nearly an entire forum that Keane was more than a physical defensive midfielder.

I am also not one of those who find the Spanish teams better, especially Barcelona which was a low level team until the Messi generation. Real was just a Historical team favored by a dictator until the Galacticos era and the Cristiano generation. But, without the C1, it made our life harder on the transfer market, which is quite understandable. That's really all. The young generation have memories of him being magnificent and tragic figure at the 2006 World Cup (with the famous Brazil performance and the headbutt to finish it off), plus he played for Juventus and Madrid, which both have enormous fan bases, plus he won Ballon D'Or and is widely regarded by the fans as one of the greatest footballers of all time (even though he, imo, isn't); there are lot's of comparisons between Messi/Ronaldo and Zidane/L.Ronaldo that favors the latter ones
Giggs is seen as a dinosaur from the 90's and most of the young players haven't seen/forgot his peak level because of the length of his career. So 90% of neutrals will rate Zidane higher than Giggs and most of them will recognize him - be it from the WC footage or an adverts (Giggs had a few great ads at the beginning of his career but then the public interest shifted towards Beckham)
That dinosaur won the PL player of the hear in 2011 (?) and scored the last oen in the CL final in 08! Starting midfielder in our run to the CL final in 2011 when he scored or asisted in every knockout game. Some dinosaur.

You guys are underestimating the impact of the world cup. Do you think casuals like me would know who Maradona was if it wasn't for the world cup? I never saw Maradona play in my life. Still knew who he was when I was a kid. Didn't even know which club he played for. It's the same for Zidane pretty much. But there's also the fact Zidane was one of the galacticos for RM, which was probably even bigger than Man Utd at that time.
People outside of Man Utd fans rarely talk about Giggs, while both Man Utd and non-Utd fans talk about Zidane. I'm amazed there's even an argument here. Especially after his headbutt, everyone knows Zidane. Even during the global television boom, it was more about Beckham than Giggs when it came to Man Utd. You can try to argue all day long, won't change anything.

Going to have to disagree with you on that. General interest fans know about Zidane as one of the best to ever play the game. His performance in 98 WC, one of the greatest CL goals, and headbutting materazzi were big moments that won't be forgotten easily.

I'm a fan of Giggs but come on, are you seriously comparing the popularity of Giggs to Zidane, a world football icon? He's like France's version of David Beckham. According to Sport Adidas would be interested in a move to Madrid because they would consider it more profitable for their business interests. This happens all the time. Keane is retrospectively viewed by a lot of people (who I can only assume never really saw him play) as some kind of Vinny Jones-esque super violent and technically limited player, who had high levels of drive. Worth a thread of it's own, but there are tons of players who have reputations that don't match my memories of them including; Barthez was terrible at Utd (didn't end well, but season 1 as outstanding) and that Scholes was a permanent fixture in the first 11 from the mid 90s due to being god like, as a couple of examples.

It isn't daft, if anything is daft it's saying that Giggs is as well-known as Zidane. The better comparison would be Beckham, who, despite being an inferior player, is probably better known than Zidane. But Zidane is one of the most famous and marketable football players in history - today it would probably be Pele, Maradona, Zidane, L. Ronaldo, Beckham, Messi and Cristiano.
Giggs had a short spell of fame in the 90's (take reebok ads for example), but he was very soon outshined by Beckham and he never was the marketing face of the team again - after Beckham's departure Rooney and Cristiano stepped up.
If we count his underwhelming international record (not his fault obviously) and the fact that Zidane showed his very best at the Euros and World Cups, we'll see a clearer picture. Most of the World's population doesn't watch or care about the club football, international tournaments are still by far the most popular things in football - and while Giggs never even participated, Zidane won everything and ended his career with a ridiculous Hollywood ending
Adidas couldn't give a feck if it was United or Madrid, just as long as it is to a team they have a partnership with. Honestly that's splitting hairs in terms of world brand. Although IMO I think they might lean towards United, they have Ronaldo, Bale, Kroos and Benzema for Madrid. Players they have from United are De Gea, Shaw, Herrera, Mata, Schneiderlin and Blind. So really only De Gea. Shaw, Herrera, Schneiderlin and Blind aren't guys they can market to the world and Mata is likely gone.
