Yeah, made no sense for Real to go after him apart from wanting the shiny new toy on the market. Pogba will be worth a lot more to us then he would have been worth to Madrid so it did not make sense for you lot to go against us in a bidding war.
With both Marca and AS stating that Real are out of the race, and the latter noting that the player himself has distanced himself from a potential move in the last few days, I think it's safe to say that it's more than likely going to happen now.
All that it depends on now is if Juve will be happy to accept a 120m€ offer from us. They'd be mad not to TBH, and with them previously trying to get Gomes from Valencia this summer, I'd think they have been preparing for the eventuality in any case.
If, by chance, we don't get Pogba, I'd be happy to go for Gomes TBH. A perfectly adequate alternative.

This is still a possibility, since Pogba has only said that he identifies as "Mancunian". Maybe he wouldn't have a problem going to City. I don't see it happening, personally, but scarier things have happened.
