We have to over pay for talents in order to compete for the big tropheys again.

I'd pay for Pogba what it takes but I have doubts about him. He's very good and flashy at times but he is not a 100 mill player by far. To over pay with 15-20 mill. is one thing, to over pay with some 40 mill is another.

It is probably a moot point though because I still don't believe that Pogba will come this summer even though Madrid and Barca being not ready to over pay for him makes it a lot easier for us. The perspective to play in EL next season after losing such a big final won't be particularly alluring for him.
 
How do people still think that the alternative use of this money is to buy 3 or 4 other top players?

Have people just had their fingers in their ears and eyes closed the last few years, refusing to acknowledge the ridiculous inflation in transfer fees? There's talk of Stones going for £50m ffs.

Is £100m a ludicrously excessive amount of money? Yes, of course it is, but that's what it takes to sign this kind of player in 2016. If Madrid were trying to buy a 24 year old Ronaldo off us in this day and age it'd take double what they paid us in 2009, if not more.
 
By the logic being used in here, kante shouldn't be considered, because Deschamps preferred playing Pogba out of position and sissokho in his stead.

It all boils down to how highly rated Pogba is for and for the others in the end. When I'm displaying skepticism, I only look at football elements but this transfer incorporates more than the football, the marketing, his age, many many things are important (things I dislike to talk about tbh). Obviously the club cannot look at the football alone without considering other elements.

Pogba isn't comparable to a 24 year old Ronaldo. The £100m price tag seems to have gotten some people trapped in overhyping his Juventus form.

So in your opinion, can he or can he not? Better in a 3 but not as good in a 2? Or just able to do both equally well? I haven't watched him play since he left United.
 
Verratti is unobtainable though, would love him here.

Sadly when we're talking about targets that you could get to vastly improve our midfield there aren't too many names that come to my mind. Modrić, Kroos, Verratti, all won't come here. Krychowiak moved to PSG (and I'd easily have him over any of our midfielders), Pogba probably can be purchased, Kante is probably obtainable.

He is gone. If not this season, next season for sure. If he stays this season, he'll be mainly used as a back-up for Pogba or Zlatan.

I don't think we need to worry about him moving deeper. I was trying to clear the misconception that he is a central midfielder. He is an attacking midfielder in a three or a number 10, as far as I am concerned. Personally, I like central midfielders to be more nuanced and with a good passing range. A good and functioning central midfield is key to a good style of play.

What I want is to sign another midfielder: preferably Ruben Neves or a more mobile version of William Carvallaho in addition to Pogba. I'll be a happy camper if this is our midfield make-up next season:

With some imagination, he could do a role in the 10 position or a free floating role. We've never seen him there. I would never want to see us play him that deep and I think the days of relying on two are over. Teams will just swamp the midfield. SammyUnited_83 that's like asking kids not to try and open their presents before xmas day. Your asking a lot lol
 
GDS say we are pushing ahead with the transfer and want it done ASAP.

A 24 years old Ronaldo - in current transfer climate - would have cost 200m. He would probably be out of reach for any club. Just look at Neymar's price which was mentioned, and Neymar isn't as good as Ronaldo when he left us.
 
If he does come for £100m or whatever. He and Jose are going to have an immense amount of pressure of their shoulders to succeed.

Yes that also plays a part but the primary question is will he improve us and do we want him? For me the answer is yes, and the fee is meaningless to me, it's just a matter of the clubs figuring out between them what it's worth.

Apologises if this has been asked before but are Pogba's agent even allowed to talk to any clubs without the permission of Juventus?

I understand that he could do it anyway but I doubt it would be done in a manner that could leak to the public.
 
If Mourinho thinks that Pogba could be the focal point of this United team then a £90m bid would not really be that obscene. He's a quality player, still very young but with lots of experience and he seems suited to the league too. Obviously it's a lot of money but in a market where Ighalo is apparently worth north of £30m and Troy Deeney has a bid rejected for him in excess of £25m, this isn't really such a terrible deal.
 
There are countless positives behind it though (if it indeed happens)

  • Drives up prices when the majority of our business is done for this year.
  • Sends a statement, along with Zlatan and Jose, that we are back at the top table.
  • A top top player joins us
  • Commercially the cost of the deal wont be fully offset by any means BUT it will undoubtedly help. Toothbrush sponsor, anyone?

Exactly this, and it's what so many don't understand. To Juve he's worth at least 80m quid & they have no intention of selling for less, for us he's worth that +some. For Madrid he's worth say 70m.

That's how these things work.

Of course, that's the whole idea of an agent. If the player did it himself it would be illegal, but a representative can talk all he likes, it's just a chat after all.

Good point. We've not heard anything. From his agent, from Juventus or from United. I'm not sure Juventus would have the cheek to complain about another clubs ethics - and they've probably do it too. So I think the twitter world (etc) suits them as you get bits of fact and a whole lot of fiction. It's too murky a world to cause anyone any real problems.

It's very difficult to change the mentality of a player though. He has a similar approach to Berbatov in terms of work rate and desire, he doesn't seem the type to run through a brick wall for his manager, which is strange for a Mourinho target. He seems arrogant and/or self confident, which can work both ways for a young player, and imo needs to be surrounded by runners to bring out the best in him. He needs defensive cover to thrive, which suggests he'd play as the most advanced of a midfield three.

Truth be told, he's an exceptional talent and an upgrade on what we currently have. He has a lot of the tools required to be world class, but there is definitely something missing, something that I feel we will struggle to get out of him. With the fee being so high, it is a huge risk, but I'm confident that Mourinho knows what he is doing and I'm more than impressed with his work in the transfer market so far. Pogba is a gamble worth taking, despite the inflated fee.
 
He will be worth every penny lads. Hopefully a decade worth of service. When he starts to show his stuff and lead us to titles the fee will hardly be an issue as you will be top happy celebrating trophies. People argued about RVP's Fee, no one cared after that hattrick vs soton :lol:. he's coming home, can't wait!!!!

Can the club easily afford him? Yes.

In today's world, virtually every transfer is overpriced. BUT WHY THE FECK SHOULD WE CARE.
If he comes here and fulfills his potential. He'd be worth more than £100m to us. He'd be priceless.
Would I sell Anthony Martial for £100m. Would I feck. Ofcourse not.

I agree to an extent - but, unlike Berbatov, I feel that with a team built around him Pogba can led us to titles in the future. Most likely he'll need a genuine and hardworking playmaker (if he doesn't transform into one, which I don't think he will) and a midfield dynamo by his side.

Plus a manager like Mourinho is one of the few who can actually change young player's mentality

And improves us in the longer-term too. Next summer we could be looking to strengthen a team that already contains De Gea, Shaw, Martial and Pogba. That looks like a pretty strong and exciting nucleus to build a team around.

I did say they "can" :) They are all three rather young midfielders.
I have honestly seen less of Naingolan and maybe Kanté too compared to Verratti. But the few times I did watch them (for their clubs mostly), Kanté and Naingolan show good fight in the middle and good enough technique to release a good pass quick from their half, notably when their team has just won the ball back. I'm assuming that having that composure on the ball (thanks to good technique and movement) deep in your half does allow you to pick the speed and lenght of your distribution.

If i use Scholes as a benchmark, I'd say Verratti has his poise in midfield and distribution. Naingolan in comparison, not as good a long range passer as Verratti, but he has more fight and a wicked shot. Kanté has a bit of everything, but not as good a passer as Verratti and will probably not score as much as Naingolan. One thing they all have is an ability in their movement to make space for themselves in the middle that makes it look like they all the time they need to make the right pass out of their half. That is one element I have not seen in Pogba's game, despite him having the talent to pull it off. It is a question of mind over matter I think, or maturity. I feel that Pogba is very much attracted by scoring goals.

This. The most important is the 4th question I think. We can afford £100m so should we:
a) sign the "best value" midfielder we can
b) sign the best midfielder we can

I want us to get back on top, so if Pogba is who Jose has identified as the best man for that position (easy to see why) and the club's hierarchy have crunched the numbers then it's of no issue to me at all.
