Players that might be considered a miss this season may well go on to be terrific signings after they've settled.

Seems like a bit of a pointless debate.

I doubt Bailly would be a miss. Jose is rarely wrong with defenders and he has all the physical qualities to be a top one.

It's not a debate, I was curious to see how people think players will get on this season.

If you don't wish to give your opinion, you are free not to.

For 100 million plus, anything less than player of the year will be a miss.

Transfer fees these days are ridiculous so does it really matter? Saying that anything less than 'player of the year' in his first season at a club with a new manager and plenty of new personnel is pretty ridiculous.

I actually think Bailly could end up being our best signing, and that is saying something.

Obviously that's a joke but if Pogba ends up in and out of the team and finishes the season with 20 league appearances then you'd say that was a "miss" given the fee. If someone like Takuma Asano at Arsenal did the same you could say it was a "hit". The fee matters.

Surprised so many people are expecting Miki to flop.
From my perspective, I worry that his versatility may strangely hamper him nailing down a position and ,combined with his reputedly sensitive nature, he may struggle. Hope I'm wrong.

Well yeah, if that happens then he won't have enjoyed a great first season but I don't expect to see the very best of him until he settles down / we have a settled starting 11.

I think transfer fees are pretty irrelevant when bidding for established players these days. I mean €30m plus used to get you world class players but these days it guarantees nothing and you could end up with a Cuadrado on your hands. Yes, there might still be gems out there to be found but in general, when it comes to established players, the prices are ridiculous and may not necessarily reflect that players ability. That's my take on it anyway.

Keep repeating those numbers to yourself and they might become true.

..or you could read Juventus' statement and realize it is 89m with them paying Raiola's slice.

I think he'll be a victim of his own qualities. He can play anywhere across the front 3 and with Rooney in the side, he'll be played out right. He's very good from there too and will move centrally anyways but the static duo of Ibra and Rooney that he moves to will hamper him. It's not the sort of system that let's him excel. If and when we drop Rooney, get him central with movement all around him, we'll get the best out of him.

Pogba a miss for the rival fan

Do you think that spending big guarantees a hit? I would have thought that United fans in particular might have learnt otherwise by now.

I am pretty sure around 30% people here didn't want Pogba, it's not just the rival fans that don't think he's that great as many here think.

I just got the impression that maybe the thread was made on the back of the Pogba signing. Could be a coincidence :wenger:

Nope. I don't think transfer fees reflect much, though. The fees for players these days is outrageous and is only going to get worse.

Not yet. You need to tell us another 50 times before it sinks in I reckon.

You may not have noticed, but (a) the question was not addressed to you; and (b) the poster to whom it was addressed said "Pogba a miss for the rival fan " .... which suggests that he thought possibility of Pogba flopping was laughable.

You may not have noticed (though you probably did since you wrote it) but when you state this:

You may have some United fans arguing the point since you know, you are on a United forum after all. Anyway, keep telling yourself he's going to be shit just because he cost a lot of money. Sleep well.

Arsenal - Granit Xhaka - HIT (Good but not spectacular).
Bournemouth - Jordon Ibe MISS (Solid but not productive enough for the £)
Chelsea - Kante HIT (Just sheer class, signing of the window still IMO)
Chelsea - Batshuayi MISS (Don't think he'll play enough and will become the new Remy, good back-up)
Palace - Andros Townsend HIT (They play with traditional wingers, will suit him)
Everton - Idrissa Gueye HIT (Nothing spectacular but a good defensive base in MF that they've missed)
Leicester - Musa HIT (Pacey and direct like Vardy, won't be that good but will be a success)
Leicester - Mendy HIT (Not as good as Kante of course but I think he'll do fine)
Liverpool - Mane MISS (Don't think he'll prove to be worth the money, good but not great player)
Liverpool - Wijnaldum MISS (A lot of money and don't see where he fits in)
Man City - Stones MISS (Style suits Pep but Pep's style won't suit the Prem and he'll miss a fit Kompany beside him)
Man City - Gundogan MISS (Too many injuries incoming I feel to be a proper success)
Man City - Nolito MISS (Don't think he'll play much, seems a stop-gap)
Man City - Sane MISS (Don't think he's as good as a lot make out and needs time)
Man City - Jesus HIT (Think he'll make it purely on talent alone)
Man United - Bailly HIT (Strong and aggressive, will make mistakes but overall be a rock)
Man United - Zlatan HIT (Probably 15 goals I think and a focal point for the attack United have missed)
Man United - Pogba HIT (Not necessarily worth a record fee but I think he'll have a really good season still)
Man United - Mkhitaryan MISS (Just got a feeling that he's peaked at Dortmund, will start slow and suffer a confidence hit)
Boro - Valdes HIT (Will be a solid and can't go wrong for a free transfer)
Boro - Negredo MISS (Don't think he's a consistent goalscorer anywhere and will be off the bench more often than not)
Swansea - Llorente MISS (As above, don't expect him to get goals)
Spurs - Wanyama HIT (Won't play all the time but good cover for Dier and will prove to be good value especially)
Spurs - Janssen MISS (Can't see Pochettino playing 2 up front and lack of gametime will stunt his development)
West Ham - Feghouli HIT (Good technically, think he'll beat full-backs all day and get a few assists with Carroll to aim for)
West Ham - Ayew HIT (Think they'll make more of him as an overall player than Swansea did)
